Chapter 3: The Missing Folder

The silence that followed the paramedic’s words was deafening.

“She pushed me.”

Nathaniel stood frozen, unable to reconcile the image of the woman he had married with the accusation hanging in the air. Vivian looked equally stunned, but unlike Nathaniel, her shock was fueled by fear rather than disbelief.

Detective Daniel Carter broke the silence.

“Take Mrs. Whitmore’s statement as soon as her doctors say she’s stable enough to speak.”

“Yes, Detective,” one of the officers replied.

The paramedics carefully loaded Eleanor into the ambulance. Nathaniel climbed in beside his grandmother without saying a word to Vivian. Just before the doors closed, he looked back at his wife.

There was no anger in his eyes.

Only disappointment.

It hurt Vivian far more than if he had shouted.

As the ambulance disappeared through the mansion gates, Detective Carter turned to the remaining officers.

“No one leaves this property until we finish processing the scene.”

Vivian forced a weak smile.

“Detective, surely that won’t be necessary. This has all been a misunderstanding.”

“I hope so,” Carter replied evenly. “But until we determine exactly what happened, this house is now part of an active investigation.”

Two officers quietly positioned themselves near the front entrance.

Vivian suddenly felt trapped.

An hour later, forensic investigators continued photographing every inch of the staircase. One technician carefully vacuumed tiny fibers from the carpet runner, while another dusted the railing for fingerprints.

Carter returned to the top of the staircase.

He replayed Lily’s testimony in his mind.

Grandma said she wasn't changing her mind.

They argued.

Then Aunt Vivian pushed her.

If Eleanor had been carrying documents related to changing her will, where were they?

He turned toward James.

“You mentioned legal papers.”

“Yes, Detective.”

“What did they look like?”

James thought for a moment.

“Mrs. Eleanor carried a dark brown leather folder. She never let it out of her sight.”

“A folder?”

“Yes.”

Carter glanced toward the staircase.

“I don’t see one.”

Neither did anyone else.

The detective’s instincts sharpened immediately.

He addressed the officers.

“Search the entire first floor.”

Within minutes, drawers were opened, closets inspected, and every room surrounding the foyer carefully examined.

Nothing.

The folder had vanished.

Upstairs, Vivian stood alone in the master bedroom, staring at herself in the mirror.

Her breathing was uneven.

Everything was unraveling.

The witness.

The scratches.

Eleanor surviving.

The missing necklace clasp.

Now the detective was searching for the folder.

She reached into her dress pocket and removed the small silver key.

It glimmered under the bedroom lights.

“This is all I need,” she whispered.

“If I destroy the documents before anyone finds them…”

Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the bedroom door.

She quickly slipped the key back into her pocket.

“Yes?”

A young housekeeper stepped inside.

“Mrs. Whitmore… Detective Carter would like everyone downstairs.”

“I’ll be there.”

The housekeeper nodded before quietly leaving.

As soon as the door closed, Vivian hurried toward her walk-in closet.

Hidden behind a row of expensive coats was a narrow wall safe.

She entered a six-digit code.

The steel door swung open.

Inside were stacks of jewelry boxes, passports, cash…

…and a folded sheet of paper.

Vivian pulled it out.

Her eyes widened.

It wasn't the leather folder.

It was only one page.

A copy of Eleanor’s handwritten notes.

Across the top, in elegant cursive, were the words:

Evidence of Financial Theft.

Below was a list of charitable accounts.

Wire transfers.

Offshore companies.

Dates.

Amounts.

Every fraudulent transaction Vivian had spent years hiding.

Her hands trembled.

“No…”

She searched the safe frantically.

The folder wasn't there.

Someone else had taken it.

Downstairs, Detective Carter watched Vivian descend the staircase.

She looked different now.

More anxious.

More distracted.

As if she had just discovered something was missing.

He smiled almost imperceptibly.

People rarely realized they revealed themselves through panic.

“Mrs. Whitmore,” he said calmly.

“Yes?”

“One more question.”

She forced another smile.

“Of course.”

“Did Eleanor have anything in her hands before she fell?”

Vivian hesitated for only a second.

“No.”

James frowned.

“I’m sorry, Detective…”

Everyone turned toward the elderly butler.

“That’s not correct.”

Vivian felt her stomach drop.

James continued.

“When I served tea this morning, Mrs. Eleanor was carrying a brown leather folder. She even joked that she was guarding it with her life.”

Detective Carter’s expression darkened.

“And where is that folder now?”

No one answered.

The detective slowly surveyed the room.

Then he spoke the words that made Vivian’s blood run cold.

“Whoever has that folder knows exactly why Mrs. Whitmore was pushed.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the evening sky.

Hidden somewhere inside the sprawling Whitmore estate…

…the folder containing the family’s darkest secrets was still waiting to be found.

And someone besides Vivian already knew where it was.
