Chapter 14: Justice in the Shadows

The silence lasted only a heartbeat.

Then chaos erupted.

Three of the supposed FBI agents swung their rifles toward Detective Daniel Carter, Special Agent Rebecca Mills, and Nathaniel.

"Drop your weapons," one of the impostors ordered.

Rebecca's eyes never left the man speaking.

"You're making a mistake."

He smiled coldly.

"No, Agent Mills. We've spent years making sure we never make mistakes."

Before anyone else could react, James suddenly shouted.

"Down!"

Instinct took over.

Nathaniel, Eleanor, and Lily threw themselves behind the massive marble staircase as James hurled a heavy bronze umbrella stand across the foyer.

The stand crashed into one of the gunmen, knocking his rifle aside.

Marcus seized the opportunity.

He fired twice.

The first bullet shattered a chandelier directly above the impostors.

Crystal rained down like shards of ice.

The second struck one man's shoulder, sending him crashing to the floor.

Detective Carter tackled another attacker before he could regain his balance.

The rifle skidded across the marble floor.

Rebecca dove after it.

Within seconds, the elegant foyer had become a battlefield.

Charles Ashford's hidden elevator continued descending beneath the mansion.

He calmly adjusted his cufflinks while watching the firefight unfold on a small surveillance monitor inside the elevator.

He wasn't concerned.

The battle upstairs was only a distraction.

His real objective was almost complete.

He pressed another button.

Deep beneath the estate, massive computer servers hummed to life.

Across multiple international banks, encrypted financial transactions began processing automatically.

Billions of dollars started moving through dozens of shell corporations.

Back upstairs, Marcus pinned one of the impostors against a wall.

"Where is Charles going?"

The wounded man laughed.

"You'll never catch him."

Marcus tightened his grip.

"Tell me!"

"The vault."

"What vault?"

The man's smile widened.

"The Founder's Vault."

Before Marcus could ask another question, the man bit down on something hidden inside his mouth.

His body went limp.

Rebecca checked immediately.

"Cyanide."

Marcus stepped back in frustration.

"They were prepared to die."

Nathaniel helped Eleanor to her feet.

"Grandma, what is the Founder's Vault?"

Her face turned pale.

"I prayed no one would ever find it."

She looked toward the grandfather clock.

"Your great-grandfather built a secure chamber beneath this house almost a century ago."

Nathaniel frowned.

"Why?"

"To protect the family's most valuable assets during times of war."

Marcus immediately understood.

"The emergency reserve."

Eleanor nodded.

"But there was something even more valuable stored there."

"What?"

She looked directly at Nathaniel.

"The original ownership certificates."

Nathaniel's eyes widened.

"The documents proving legal control of every Whitmore company."

"Yes."

Rebecca spoke quickly.

"If Charles gets those..."

"He can forge the transfers before we stop the electronic transactions," Eleanor finished.

Detective Carter examined the hidden elevator shaft.

"It's already gone."

Marcus looked around.

"There has to be another entrance."

James suddenly remembered something.

"There is."

Everyone turned toward him.

"When Richard renovated the wine cellar twenty years ago, he mentioned an old service tunnel beneath it."

Eleanor nodded.

"I haven't thought about that passage in years."

"Can it reach the vault?"

"It was built for exactly that purpose."

Minutes later, the group hurried through the mansion's underground wine cellar.

Behind rows of century-old bottles, James located a rusted iron door hidden beneath thick layers of dust.

He pulled the heavy lever.

The ancient mechanism groaned before slowly opening.

A narrow stone staircase descended into darkness.

Marcus checked his pistol.

"Let's move."

Deep underground, Charles Ashford entered the Founder's Vault.

The room resembled an old bank, with reinforced steel walls and rows of secure deposit boxes.

At the center stood an enormous circular safe door.

A digital screen glowed beside it.

AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE REQUIRED

Charles smiled.

"As expected."

He removed a small device from his briefcase.

A portable biometric scanner.

He placed Eleanor's medical records, stolen from the hospital, into the machine.

Within seconds, the device generated a three-dimensional replica of her fingerprint.

Then another scan.

A digital reconstruction of her signature.

Charles carefully pressed the artificial fingerprint against the scanner.

ACCESS DENIED

His smile faded.

He tried again.

ACCESS DENIED

He frowned.

"Impossible."

A calm voice echoed from behind him.

"No machine can copy forty years of trust."

Charles slowly turned.

Standing in the entrance to the vault was Eleanor Whitmore.

Beside her stood Nathaniel, Marcus, Detective Carter, Rebecca Mills, and James.

Charles sighed.

"I was hoping for a little more time."

Rebecca raised her weapon.

"It's over, Charles."

Charles looked around at the group.

Then... he laughed.

Not nervously.

Not desperately.

Confidently.

"You still don't understand."

Nathaniel frowned.

"What?"

Charles slowly stepped away from the vault.

"I was never trying to open it."

Everyone froze.

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"If not the vault..."

Charles smiled.

"I only needed all of you in the same room."

A loud metallic clang echoed through the chamber.

The massive steel vault door behind them slammed shut automatically.

Rebecca rushed toward it.

"It locked!"

Red warning lights began flashing throughout the underground chamber.

A computerized voice echoed overhead.

Self-destruct sequence initiated.

Ten minutes until total structural collapse.

Charles calmly walked toward a hidden exit in the far wall.

Before disappearing, he looked back one final time.

"If I can't own the Whitmore empire..."

"...no one will."

The hidden door slammed shut behind him.

The countdown continued.

09:59... 09:58... 09:57...
