Chapter 9: The DNA Secret That Changed My Life

Chapter 9: The DNA Secret That Changed My Life

The video ended.

But the final words remained trapped in my mind.

“She is not Daniel’s daughter.”

I replayed the sentence again.

And again.

Each time hoping I had misunderstood.

Each time hoping there was another explanation.

But there wasn’t.

My hands rested on the desk.

The same desk where I had signed business contracts.

The same desk where I planned my future.

The same desk where I once believed I had complete control over my life.

Now, everything felt like an illusion.

For six years, I had loved Sophia as my daughter.

I had held her when she cried.

I had taught her how to ride a bicycle.

I had stayed awake beside her bed when she was sick.

Every memory.

Every laugh.

Every “Daddy.”

None of that could disappear because of a piece of paper.

But the question was destroying me.

Why did everyone hide the truth?

The office door suddenly opened.

I turned quickly.

Emily stood there.

Her face was exhausted.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

“Daniel.”

I stood up.

“Where is Sophia?”

She looked down.

“Still at the mansion.”

My jaw tightened.

“Victoria won’t let her go.”

Emily nodded.

“I know.”

I looked at her.

“There’s something you never told me.”

Her expression changed.

She knew exactly what I meant.

“The DNA test.”

Silence.

That was all the answer I needed.

“You knew.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I found out after Sophia was born.”

My heart sank.

“And you never told me?”

She stepped closer.

“Because I was terrified.”

“Terrified of what?”

“Of losing you.”

I looked away.

“I deserved the truth.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I know I should have told you.”

I turned back.

“Then why didn’t you?”

Emily wiped her tears.

“Because Claire begged me not to.”

I froze.

“Claire?”

She nodded.

“She said if Victoria discovered the truth, Sophia would never be safe.”

I remembered Claire’s warning.

Victoria wasn’t trying to hide the truth.

She was trying to control it.

“What truth?”

Emily sat down.

“I need to tell you everything.”

I waited.

Six years of secrets were finally coming out.

“When Sophia was born, there was a complication.”

“What kind?”

Emily looked at the floor.

“Claire was being threatened.”

“By Victoria?”

“Yes.”

“She knew Claire was planning to leave.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Claire discovered Alexander was alive.”

My expression changed.

“Alexander?”

Emily nodded.

“He wasn’t missing.”

“He was hiding.”

I felt anger rising again.

“Why?”

“Because Victoria and Alexander were fighting over the Sterling inheritance.”

I listened carefully.

Emily continued.

“Your grandfather created a trust before he died.”

I knew about the family fortune.

But not the details.

“The trust had a condition.”

“What condition?”

She looked at me.

“The next heir had to be a direct descendant of the Sterling bloodline.”

I frowned.

“So?”

Emily swallowed.

“That meant Alexander and Victoria could not control everything forever.”

I started understanding.

“Sophia.”

Emily nodded.

“Sophia was the rightful heir.”

The room became silent.

The money.

The power.

The family empire.

Everything connected back to my daughter.

Victoria didn’t hate Sophia.

She feared her.

“She wanted Sophia gone because of the inheritance.”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked at the DNA report.

“But Alexander is connected to Sophia.”

Emily looked away.

“Yes.”

My heart started racing.

“Tell me.”

She took a deep breath.

“Claire and Alexander had a relationship before you met her.”

I felt shocked.

“Victoria knew?”

“Yes.”

“And she used it?”

“Yes.”

Emily looked at me.

“She convinced Alexander that Sophia belonged to him.”

I shook my head.

“But the DNA test?”

Emily hesitated.

“That test was real.”

My heart dropped.

“So Sophia is Alexander’s daughter.”

Emily nodded.

I sat down.

For the first time in years, I felt completely lost.

The little girl I loved.

The little girl who called me Daddy.

Was biologically connected to my brother.

Not me.

A painful silence filled the room.

Then Emily said something that changed my perspective.

“But Daniel…”

I looked up.

“What?”

She walked closer.

“Being a father was never about blood.”

My eyes filled with emotion.

“She chose you.”

I thought about Sophia.

The way she looked for me in the ballroom.

The way she cried when I walked away.

The way she called me Daddy.

Emily continued.

“She knows who her father is.”

I closed my eyes.

Because she was right.

Biology could create a child.

But love created a family.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice spoke.

“Daniel.”

I recognized it immediately.

Alexander.

My entire body became tense.

“Where is my daughter?”

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“She is safe.”

“Bring her home.”

“I can’t.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why?”

Alexander became serious.

“Because Victoria is not the person you should be afraid of.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Silence.

Then he said:

“Your mother has been protecting you from something much bigger.”

I almost laughed.

“Protecting me?”

“Yes.”

“By kidnapping my daughter?”

Alexander lowered his voice.

“By keeping you alive.”

The room became cold.

“What are you talking about?”

Alexander whispered:

“Daniel, you don’t know what happened the night your father died.”

My heart stopped.

“My father’s death?”

“Yes.”

A long pause followed.

Then Alexander said:

“The person responsible is closer to you than you think.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Another piece of my family’s dark history.

But this time, I knew one thing.

I was done being controlled.

I would find Sophia.

I would uncover the truth.

May you like

And I would make everyone who hurt my daughter answer for what they had done.

Even if that meant destroying the Sterling family forever.
