Chapter 11: The Disappearance That Exposed Everything

Chapter 11: The Disappearance That Exposed Everything

The sound of shattered glass echoed through the mansion.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

We all stood frozen at the top of the staircase, staring at the open bedroom door.

The room where my daughter had been kept safe.

The room where Victoria claimed she was protecting her.

The room that was now empty.

“Sophia?”

My voice cracked.

I ran inside.

The curtains were moving from the broken window.

Cold air rushed into the room.

A small stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

The same rabbit Sophia carried everywhere.

My heart dropped.

“No…”

I searched every corner.

The closet.

The bathroom.

Behind the furniture.

Nothing.

My daughter was gone.

Emily rushed into the room behind me.

Her face turned pale.

“Where is she?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

And that was the most terrifying feeling in the world.

A parent could survive many things.

But not the thought of their child being afraid somewhere alone.

Victoria walked slowly into the room.

Her expression changed completely.

The confidence she always carried disappeared.

“She’s gone.”

I turned toward her.

My anger exploded.

“This is your protection?”

She flinched.

“I didn’t do this.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You brought her here.”

“I know.”

“You separated her from her parents.”

“I know.”

“You told everyone you were saving her.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

Her answer surprised me.

She wasn’t fighting back.

She wasn’t pretending anymore.

She looked terrified.

Not for herself.

For Sophia.

Alexander walked toward the broken window.

He examined the glass.

Then looked down.

“She didn’t leave by herself.”

My expression changed.

“What?”

He pointed toward the floor.

“There are footprints.”

I looked down.

Small marks in the dust.

Then larger ones.

Someone had entered.

Someone had taken her.

Emily covered her mouth.

“Who would do this?”

Nobody answered.

Then Alexander noticed something near the window.

A small piece of black fabric.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

“What is it?”

He stared at the fabric.

“This isn’t random.”

I stepped closer.

“Explain.”

He looked at Victoria.

“Did you tell anyone about tonight?”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

“Did anyone know Daniel was coming here?”

Another pause.

Then Victoria slowly looked away.

My stomach tightened.

“Who knew?”

She whispered:

“One person.”

“Who?”

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“Marcus.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction on Alexander’s face told me it mattered.

“Who is Marcus?”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“Someone from our father’s old organization.”

I frowned.

“Organization?”

Victoria looked at me.

“You were never supposed to know about this.”

I stared at her.

“I’m done hearing that.”

My voice was cold.

“No more secrets.”

Alexander nodded.

“Marcus worked with our father.”

“Doing what?”

He hesitated.

“Managing private assets.”

I understood.

Money.

Power.

Influence.

The kind of world wealthy families hid from outsiders.

“And why would he take Sophia?”

Alexander looked at the empty room.

“Because he believes she belongs to him.”

My face changed.

“What?”

Before anyone could explain, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone became silent.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice spoke.

“Daniel Sterling.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who is this?”

A quiet laugh.

“You already know.”

I looked at Alexander.

His expression became serious.

“Marcus.”

The man continued.

“You have caused a lot of trouble.”

My fists tightened.

“Where is my daughter?”

“She is safe.”

“Let me speak to her.”

A pause.

Then I heard a small voice.

“Daddy?”

My entire body froze.

“Sophia!”

“Daddy, I’m scared.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“Baby, listen to me.”

“I’m coming.”

The line moved.

Marcus returned.

“You care about her.”

My voice became dangerous.

“If you hurt her—”

“You still don’t understand.”

I hated those words.

Again.

Another person claiming I didn’t understand.

“Explain.”

Marcus laughed softly.

“Your father knew the truth.”

I looked at Victoria.

She closed her eyes.

Marcus continued.

“He knew Sophia was the key.”

“The key to what?”

“The Sterling legacy.”

I felt anger rising.

“She is a child.”

“She is more than that.”

My voice became louder.

“She is my daughter.”

A pause.

Then Marcus said something unexpected.

“That is exactly why you were chosen.”

I froze.

“What?”

“You.”

The word echoed.

“You were the test.”

I didn’t understand.

Marcus continued.

“Your father knew greed would destroy this family.”

“So he created a final condition.”

I remembered the inheritance trust.

“The person who loved without wanting power.”

Marcus laughed.

“And you passed.”

I looked at Victoria.

Then Alexander.

“What are you saying?”

Marcus’s voice became serious.

“Sophia was never meant to inherit because of her blood.”

“Then why?”

“Because your father believed the true heir would be the person who protected her.”

The call went silent for a moment.

Then Marcus said:

“And Daniel…”

“What?”

“You are the only person who never tried to own her.”

My heart tightened.

“Where are you?”

No answer.

Instead, he said:

“You have until sunrise.”

“For what?”

“To prove you deserve to keep your daughter.”

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Everyone looked at me.

Emily stepped closer.

“What did he say?”

I looked at the broken window.

Then at Sophia’s empty bed.

“He wants a game.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You know him.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

Alexander’s face became serious.

“Marcus doesn’t play games.”

A pause.

“He creates tests.”

I grabbed my coat.

“I don’t care what he calls it.”

I looked at everyone.

“He has my daughter.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“I’m coming with you.”

I stopped.

After everything she had done.

After every lie.

Part of me wanted to leave her behind.

But I saw something in her eyes.

Regret.

Real regret.

“You hurt my family.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“You may never fix that.”

“I know.”

She looked toward Sophia’s empty room.

“But I know Marcus.”

A long silence followed.

Then I said:

“Fine.”

I walked toward the door.

“But if you betray me again…”

Victoria nodded.

“I understand.”

We left the mansion before midnight.

Following the only clue Marcus had given us.

A location hidden inside my father’s old records.

A place nobody in the Sterling family had visited for twenty years.

The abandoned Sterling warehouse.

Where the biggest secret of the family began.

And where my daughter was waiting.

But as we approached the dark building…

I saw something that made me stop.

A small figure standing behind the window.

Sophia.

And beside her…

May you like

Was someone I never expected to see.

My father.
