Chapter 7: The Night Sophia Disappeared

Chapter 7: The Night Sophia Disappeared
The moment Emily said those words, my entire body went cold.
“She took Sophia.”
For a few seconds, I couldn’t hear anything else.
Not the sound of the street outside.

Not Claire asking what happened.
Not even my own breathing.
All I could think about was my daughter.
My little girl.
The same child who had held onto me in that ballroom.
The same child who whispered the truth because she was brave enough to expose the person everyone feared.
“What do you mean she took Sophia?”
My voice shook.
Emily started crying.
“She came to the house twenty minutes ago.”
I gripped the phone tighter.
“Why would you let her near our daughter?”
“I didn’t.”
Her voice cracked.
“She didn’t come alone.”
I froze.
“What?”
“She brought legal papers.”
My anger grew.
“What papers?”
“She said she had temporary custody.”
I felt my blood boil.
“On what grounds?”
Emily hesitated.
Then whispered:
“She claimed I was an unfit mother.”
My heart sank.
Of course.
Victoria’s favorite weapon.
Control.
Manipulation.
Destroying people by making them look guilty.
“She told the authorities I was unstable.”
Emily continued.
“She showed them old records.”
I closed my eyes.
“Old records?”
“Yes.”
Her voice became weaker.
“Records saying I had emotional problems after Sophia was born.”
I looked at Claire.
She was watching me carefully.
She already understood.
Victoria had prepared this for years.
“She planned this.”
My voice became cold.
“She knew this day would come.”
Claire stood up.
“Daniel.”
I looked at her.
“She’s not trying to win an argument anymore.”
Her face was serious.
“She’s trying to remove Sophia before the truth comes out.”
I immediately walked toward the door.
“I’m coming home.”
Before I could leave, Claire grabbed my arm.
“Wait.”
I turned around.
“I don’t have time.”
“You do.”
Her eyes were full of urgency.
“You cannot confront Victoria emotionally.”
I stared at her.
“My daughter is gone.”
“I know.”
She softened her voice.
“But that is exactly what Victoria wants.”
I stopped.
“She wants you angry.”
Claire nodded.
“She wants you to make a mistake.”
I knew she was right.
Victoria had spent years controlling situations.
She knew exactly how to push people.
Especially me.
I forced myself to calm down.
“What do I do?”
Claire walked to a drawer.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
“Take this.”
I looked at it.
“What is it?”
“Proof.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Proof of what?”
Claire looked toward the window.
“Proof that Victoria planned everything.”
I took the drive.
“What’s on it?”
“Security footage.”
My heart skipped.
“From where?”
“The Sterling mansion.”
I stared at her.
“You had cameras there?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“Victoria did.”
Confusion crossed my face.
“Then how did you get this?”
Claire hesitated.
“Because someone inside her organization wanted the truth exposed.”
I looked at the flash drive.
“Who?”
Claire’s expression became serious.
“Someone you trust.”
Before I could ask more, my phone rang again.
This time it was an unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Daniel Sterling?”
“Yes.”
“You need to listen carefully.”
I recognized the voice.
It was the family attorney.
“Where is my daughter?”
There was silence.
Then she said:
“Your mother has taken Sophia to the Sterling estate.”
My fists tightened.
“Why?”
“She says she is protecting her.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Protecting her?”
The attorney lowered her voice.
“Daniel, there is something you should know.”
“What?”
“Your mother has been preparing a legal case for months.”
My expression changed.
“A case against who?”
“Against you.”
I felt a chill.
“She wants to prove you are unstable.”
I looked at Claire.
Everything connected.
The birthday gala.
The accusations.
The custody papers.
It was all planned.
“She wants custody.”
“Yes.”
The attorney paused.
“And she has one more thing.”
“What?”
“She has a witness.”
My heart sank.
“Who?”
The attorney’s voice became quieter.
“Someone from your past.”
I felt confused.
“My past?”
“Yes.”
A terrible feeling moved through me.
“Who?”
The answer came slowly.
“Your older brother.”
I stopped breathing.
My older brother.
The man everyone told me had left the family years ago.
The man whose name nobody mentioned.
The man connected to the biggest secrets of the Sterling family.
“No.”
I whispered.
“That’s impossible.”
The attorney sighed.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“Your brother is alive.”
The world seemed to stop.
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
“You know?”
Claire nodded slowly.
“He’s the reason Victoria was afraid.”
I felt the weight of six years of lies crashing down.
My mother.
My daughter.
My wife.
My brother.
Everyone was connected.
And now Victoria had Sophia.
I walked out of Claire’s house.
The drive back to the Sterling estate felt longer than ever.
Every red light felt like an hour.
Every second without Sophia felt unbearable.
When I finally arrived, the mansion gates were closed.
Security guards stood outside.
They recognized me.
But they didn’t move.
“Open the gate.”
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry, sir.”
I stepped closer.
“She’s my daughter.”
The guard lowered his eyes.
“Mrs. Sterling gave strict instructions.”
I stared at the mansion.
The place where I grew up.
The place where my daughter should have been safe.
Now it felt like a prison.
Then the front doors opened.
Victoria appeared.
Standing beside her was a man I hadn’t seen in twenty years.
My older brother.
Alexander Sterling.
He looked at me with a cold smile.
And in his arms…
Was Sophia.
My daughter looked at me through the window.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
I stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Victoria smiled.
“Not until you hear the truth.”
Alexander walked beside her.
And then he said the words that changed everything.
“Daniel, you have no idea who your daughter really is.”
The mansion doors closed.
Leaving me outside.
Separated from Sophia.
And for the first time in my life…
May you like
I realized I wasn’t fighting my mother anymore.
I was fighting my entire family.
