Chapter 3: The Truth Hidden Since Sophia’s Birth

Chapter 3: The Truth Hidden Since Sophia’s Birth

The ballroom felt smaller than it had ever been.

Hundreds of people stood around me, but suddenly it felt like I was alone.

My eyes stayed locked on Victoria.

The woman who raised me.

The woman I trusted.

The woman who had just suggested that my own daughter was built on a lie.

“What are you saying?”

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

Victoria looked around the room.

She saw the fear on Emily’s face.

She saw the confusion on the guests’ faces.

And somehow, she still looked confident.

That was the most terrifying part.

She had planned this.

“Daniel, you have been manipulated for years.”

She stepped closer.

“You think you know everything about your family.”

She pointed toward Sophia.

“But you don’t.”

My daughter immediately grabbed my suit jacket tighter.

I looked down at her.

She was scared.

A six-year-old child should never have to listen to adults arguing about secrets she never asked to be part of.

I lifted her higher into my arms.

“No more.”

My voice became firm.

“My daughter is standing right here.”

Victoria stared at me.

“You need to hear the truth.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The entire room became silent.

“You need to explain why my child was hungry.”

Victoria’s lips tightened.

“You are making a mistake.”

I turned toward the guests.

“Everyone here saw what happened tonight.”

I looked back at my mother.

“You had years to tell me the truth.”

I stepped forward.

“Instead, you let my daughter search through trash.”

Emily walked beside me.

Her hands were shaking.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“Tell me everything.”

She looked terrified.

Not of me.

Of the consequences.

“I tried.”

Her voice broke.

“I tried so many times.”

She looked at Victoria.

“But she always stopped me.”

Victoria laughed.

“Because you were going to destroy this family.”

Emily’s eyes filled with anger.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You were afraid everyone would know what you did.”

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Victoria’s face hardened.

“You should be careful with your words.”

Emily took a deep breath.

“For six years, I protected your reputation.”

She looked at the guests.

“I stayed silent because I loved Daniel.”

Then she looked at me.

“But I can’t watch Sophia suffer anymore.”

My heart broke hearing those words.

“What happened after Sophia was born?”

Emily looked down.

“When she was born, your mother came to the hospital.”

I listened carefully.

“She told me that Sophia was a problem.”

My eyes narrowed.

“A problem?”

Emily nodded.

“She said the Sterling family needed a perfect heir.”

Victoria interrupted.

“That is not what I said.”

Emily looked at her.

“You said a child with no Sterling blood was useless.”

The room exploded with whispers.

I felt like the ground beneath me disappeared.

“No.”

I looked at Victoria.

“Tell me she is lying.”

Victoria said nothing.

That silence hurt more than an answer.

I looked at Sophia.

Her little face was confused.

She didn’t understand why everyone was fighting.

I hugged her tighter.

“You are my daughter.”

I whispered.

“You will always be my daughter.”

Sophia nodded slowly.

But Victoria stepped forward.

“You don’t know the whole story.”

I looked at her.

“Then tell me.”

She hesitated.

For the first time in my life, I saw uncertainty in my mother’s eyes.

“The night Sophia was born…”

She paused.

“Someone changed the hospital records.”

Emily’s face turned pale.

“What?”

Victoria looked at her.

“You know exactly what happened.”

Emily stepped backward.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“No, you promised you would never talk about that.”

My heart started pounding.

“What are you two talking about?”

Nobody answered.

Then the ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A man in a dark suit walked inside.

Everyone turned.

He held a folder in his hand.

“Mr. Sterling.”

He looked directly at me.

“I believe it’s time you learned the truth about your daughter’s birth.”

My expression changed.

“Who are you?”

The man walked closer.

“My name is Thomas Reed.”

He placed the folder on the table.

“I was the attorney who handled the adoption records six years ago.”

The room went completely silent.

Adoption records.

The words hit me like a punch.

I looked at Emily.

She looked like she was about to collapse.

“You adopted Sophia?”

I could barely speak.

Emily started crying.

“No, Daniel…”

She reached toward me.

“Please let me explain.”

But Thomas opened the folder.

And inside was a document that would change my entire life.

A document with my wife’s signature.

And a secret that had been buried for six years.

I picked up the paper.

My hands were shaking.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

“Confidential agreement regarding the identity of Sophia Sterling’s biological parents.”

I looked up slowly.

My daughter was still in my arms.

My world was falling apart.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered…

Had I spent six years loving a child while everyone around me knew a truth I didn’t?
