Chapter 6: Claire’s Hidden Confession

Chapter 6: Claire’s Hidden Confession

The words left Claire’s mouth like a warning.

“Victoria knew Sophia was in danger.”

I stood frozen on the front porch.

The morning air felt colder than before.

For six years, I believed my mother had been protecting my family.

I believed she was strict.

Difficult.

Controlling.

But I never imagined she could be the person standing between my daughter and safety.

I looked at Claire.

“Invite me inside.”

She hesitated.

Then slowly opened the door.

The house was small.

Quiet.

Nothing like the Sterling mansion filled with expensive furniture and crystal decorations.

There were family photographs on the walls.

Books stacked on wooden shelves.

A simple life.

A peaceful life.

A life that made me wonder how someone like Victoria could have erased this woman from our world.

Claire closed the door behind me.

“I never thought you would come here.”

I turned around.

“Neither did I.”

She looked at me.

“You look angry.”

“I am.”

My voice became sharper.

“My daughter was eating food from a garbage cart.”

Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.

“What?”

I watched her reaction carefully.

It didn’t look fake.

It looked like genuine pain.

“You didn’t know?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

I looked away.

“Victoria told me she was helping Emily and Sophia.”

Claire slowly sat down.

“She lied.”

I remained standing.

“I need the truth.”

She nodded.

“You deserve it.”

Claire took a deep breath.

“Six years ago, before Sophia was born, I discovered something about Victoria.”

I crossed my arms.

“What?”

“She was moving money from several family accounts.”

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

Claire looked at me.

“You still believe she was protecting the family.”

I didn’t answer.

Because part of me still struggled to accept reality.

Victoria was my mother.

The person who raised me.

The person who taught me right from wrong.

But the evidence was everywhere.

Claire continued.

“She wasn’t just taking money.”

“What was she doing?”

“She was covering something up.”

I stepped closer.

“Covering what?”

Claire looked toward the window.

“The accident.”

My expression changed.

“What accident?”

She swallowed.

“The night Sophia was born.”

A chill moved through my body.

“The hospital records.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Your mother changed them.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

Claire’s eyes became filled with pain.

“Because she wanted control.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Claire looked directly at me.

“Daniel, your mother never cared about protecting the Sterling family.”

She paused.

“She cared about owning it.”

The room became silent.

I thought about every decision Victoria had made.

Every time she interfered.

Every time she acted like she knew what was best.

“What happened that night?”

Claire looked down.

“I was supposed to leave the city with Sophia.”

My heart tightened.

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Victoria?”

Claire nodded.

“She found out I knew the truth.”

“What truth?”

Claire looked at me.

“The reason she wanted Sophia gone.”

I waited.

“She believed Sophia would expose her.”

My eyebrows tightened.

“Expose her for what?”

Claire’s hands trembled.

“Because Sophia’s birth was connected to a secret Victoria spent years hiding.”

I felt frustrated.

“Everyone keeps saying secrets.”

I raised my voice.

“But nobody tells me what they are.”

Claire looked hurt.

“I know.”

She whispered.

“You have every right to be angry.”

Then she walked toward a cabinet.

She opened a small drawer.

Inside was a worn envelope.

She brought it back.

“This is why Victoria was afraid.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

An old letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother’s handwriting.

My stomach dropped.

“Where did you get this?”

Claire looked away.

“Victoria wrote it.”

I unfolded the paper.

The first line made my hands shake.

“Claire, if you refuse to cooperate, I will make sure Daniel never knows the truth.”

I continued reading.

The letter contained threats.

Warnings.

Promises to destroy Claire’s life.

But one sentence made my heart stop.

“If Sophia ever discovers who she really is, the Sterling legacy will collapse.”

I looked up.

“What does this mean?”

Claire sat quietly.

“It means Sophia is connected to something bigger than you realize.”

I stared at her.

“Who is Sophia?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“She is not just your daughter.”

My heart pounded.

“Then what is she?”

Claire whispered:

“She is the only person who can expose Victoria’s biggest secret.”

I looked back at the letter.

The truth was getting darker.

But I needed answers.

“What secret?”

Claire hesitated.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother was never supposed to inherit the Sterling fortune.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Claire continued.

“The fortune belonged to someone else.”

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“To Sophia.”

I felt the room spinning.

“My daughter?”

Claire nodded.

“Victoria stole everything before Sophia was even born.”

I stared at the woman in front of me.

Six years of lies.

Six years of manipulation.

Six years of believing the wrong person.

And suddenly, the biggest question was no longer why Victoria hurt my family.

The question was…

How much had she stolen from my daughter?

Before I could answer, my phone suddenly rang.

The screen showed Emily’s name.

I answered immediately.

“Emily?”

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel…”

I stood up.

“What happened?”

There was silence.

Then she whispered:

“You need to come home.”

My heart sank.

“Why?”

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Because Victoria came here.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“And?”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“She took Sophia.”
