Chapter 7 - Sabrina's Second Phone.

Sabrina Monroe did not make it out of the hotel before she realized she had left something behind.
She was already inside a black town car when her hand searched the side pocket of her handbag and found nothing.
Her regular phone was there.
Her wallet was there.
The second phone was not.
She told the driver to stop.
"Problem?" he asked.
"I forgot something upstairs."
The driver looked toward the hotel entrance.
"I can wait."
"Do that."
Sabrina stepped onto the sidewalk and immediately saw two Bennett Global security officers near the revolving doors.
They were not blocking anyone.
They did not need to.
Their presence told her the building had changed since last night.
She stood outside for several seconds, calculating.
The second phone mattered more than her clothes, jewelry, or passport.
Ryan had given it to her eight months earlier.
He said it was for discretion.
He said executives used separate devices all the time.
She had believed him because discretion was useful in an affair.
Only later did the phone begin receiving documents.
Invoices.
Account instructions.
Vendor schedules.
Messages from someone identified only as V.
Sabrina had asked questions at first.
Ryan told her the documents were ordinary consulting materials.
Then Monroe Brand Advisory started receiving payments far larger than her actual work could justify.
She stopped asking questions because money had a way of turning confusion into permission.
Now the phone was somewhere inside a hotel controlled by the woman she had publicly humiliated.
Sabrina reentered the lobby.
Ethan saw her immediately.
"Ms. Monroe."
"I left a phone in the penthouse."
"I'll contact security."
"I can get it myself."
"The suite is temporarily restricted."
Her smile tightened.
"My property is in there."
"And it will be returned if located."
"I want to speak to Charlotte."
Ethan's expression remained neutral.
"Madam Chair is occupied."
The title made Sabrina's stomach drop again.
"Tell her this is important."
Ethan studied her for a moment.
Then he made a call.
Ten minutes later, Sabrina was escorted into a small conference room near the executive offices.
Charlotte entered with Maya Patel.
No Ryan.
No board members.
No audience.
Sabrina hated that the lack of spectacle made the encounter feel more serious.
Charlotte sat across from her.
"You forgot a phone."
Sabrina folded her arms.
"A private phone."
"What does it look like?"
"Black."
Charlotte almost smiled.
"That narrows it down."
Sabrina's jaw tightened.
"Small. No case."
Maya asked, "Registered to you?"
"It's prepaid."
"Purchased by you?"
Sabrina hesitated.
"Ryan bought it."
Charlotte's expression did not change.
"When?"
"I don't remember."
Maya opened a notebook.
"Approximately."
"Eight months ago."
Charlotte and Maya exchanged a glance.
That was the same period the cloned approval token first appeared.
Sabrina saw the look.
"What?"
"Nothing yet," Charlotte said.
"Where did you last see it?"
"The bedroom."
"Unlocked?"
"No."
"Passcode?"
"I'm not giving you that."
Maya spoke calmly.
"You do not have to."
"Good."
"But if the device contains company records subject to a litigation hold, deleting or remotely wiping it would create additional problems."
Sabrina looked down at her regular phone.
Maya noticed.
"Do not touch the second device remotely."
"I wasn't going to."
"Excellent."
The conference-room door opened.
Marcus stepped inside carrying a transparent evidence pouch.
Inside was a small black phone.
Sabrina's composure broke for half a second.
"That's mine."
Marcus placed it on the table.
"It was found behind the nightstand."
Sabrina reached for it.
Maya put one hand on the bag first.
"We need to determine whether it contains Bennett Global information."
"You cannot search my phone."
"Without your consent or legal authority, we won't search your private content."
Sabrina relaxed slightly.
Maya continued.
"But you may want counsel before deciding what to do next."
"Why?"
Charlotte slid a printed invoice across the table.
MONROE BRAND ADVISORY LLC.
Eight hundred seventy-five thousand dollars in aggregate payments appeared beneath the company name.
Sabrina stared at the total.
"That isn't right."
Charlotte watched her carefully.
"Which part?"
"The amount."
"You received it."
"No."
Maya leaned forward.
"Your company account did."
"I didn't get that much."
"How much did you get?"
Sabrina's eyes moved between them.
"Maybe two hundred thousand."
"For what services?"
"Brand work. Events. Client introductions."
"Did you invoice Bennett Global?"
"Ryan handled the paperwork."
Charlotte's voice stayed soft.
"You let my husband invoice my company through your business?"
Sabrina bristled.
"I didn't know it was your company."
"That is not the important part of the question."
Sabrina looked away.
Charlotte continued.
"Where did the remaining money go?"
"I don't know."
Maya placed a second page on the table.
"Most payments were moved within twenty-four hours to three other accounts."
Sabrina stared.
"Ryan told me those were tax and subcontractor accounts."
"Were they yours?"
"One was."
"The others?"
"No."
"Who controlled them?"
"I don't know."
Charlotte watched the certainty disappear from Sabrina's face.
For the first time, the mistress looked less like an antagonist and more like someone realizing she might have been used too.
That did not erase what she had done in the lobby.
It changed only the size of the game.
Maya asked, "Who is V?"
Sabrina went still.
Charlotte caught it immediately.
"There are messages from V on the second phone, aren't there?"
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to."
Sabrina stood.
"I want my lawyer."
"You should call one," Maya said.
"And I want my phone."
"Once its status is resolved."
"You're holding my property."
"We are preserving a device found in a restricted company suite that may contain company records."
Maya's voice remained calm.
"Your lawyer can address the rest with us."
Sabrina looked at Charlotte.
"You think Ryan planned all of this?"
Charlotte's answer came slowly.
"I think Ryan planned more than an affair."
Sabrina swallowed.
"He told me you were nobody."
Charlotte felt no pleasure in the irony.
"He told himself the same thing."
Sabrina sat back down.
"If I give you the passcode, what happens to me?"
Maya answered before Charlotte could.
"No promises."
"Then why would I help?"
"Because facts are going to come out with or without your cooperation."
Maya tapped the invoice.
"The only question is whether your actions look different once your full role is understood."
Sabrina stared at the evidence pouch.
"I didn't know about forged signatures."
Charlotte did not react.
"I didn't know about cloned approvals."
Still nothing.
"Ryan said the accounts were authorized by Victor."
That mattered.
Maya asked, "Victor Hale?"
Sabrina nodded once.
"He met us here yesterday."
"At what time?"
"Around three."
"Before Charlotte arrived?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Sabrina looked at Charlotte.
"He was angry."
"About what?"
"Ryan wanted out."
Charlotte's chest tightened.
"Out of the affair?"
Sabrina almost laughed.
"No."
"Out of what?"
Sabrina looked down at the phone.
"Whatever Victor had him doing."
Maya's pen moved quickly.
"What did Victor say?"
Sabrina closed her eyes, remembering.
"He said Ryan didn't get to walk away until the control event was complete."
Charlotte heard the phrase from Victor's laptop folder.
"Did he explain control event?"
"No."
"Did Ryan?"
"He said it was a board vote."
Charlotte felt a cold pressure behind her ribs.
"A vote about what?"
Sabrina opened her eyes.
"You."
Silence filled the room.
"He said after the vote, you wouldn't control Bennett anymore."
Charlotte stared at her.
Maya stopped writing.
"How would Ryan know that?"
Sabrina's voice dropped.
"Because Victor told him your marriage was the key."
Charlotte felt the meaning before she understood the mechanics.
"Explain."
Sabrina shook her head.
"That's all I know."
"No."
Charlotte leaned forward.
"You came back for this phone because you know more."
Sabrina's eyes flashed with anger.
"I came back because that phone could destroy me."
"Then help us understand why."
A long silence followed.
Finally, Sabrina reached for a pen.
She wrote six digits on a piece of paper.
"That's the passcode."
Maya took it.
"Anything else?"
Sabrina looked directly at Charlotte.
"There's an audio recording from yesterday."
"Of whom?"
"Ryan and Victor."
"You recorded them?"
"They forgot I was in the bedroom."
Charlotte's pulse quickened.
"What do they say?"
Sabrina's face lost its color.
"Victor tells Ryan that if you won't sign the voting proxy, he needs to make you look unstable enough that the board will take control away from you."
Charlotte did not move.
The public humiliation in the lobby suddenly had a new shape.
It might not have been random cruelty.
It might have been useful evidence for a plan.
Sabrina asked for a glass of water.
Her hand shook when she lifted it.
Charlotte watched without sympathy but also without satisfaction.
"Did Victor ever ask you to make me angry before yesterday?"
Sabrina thought for a moment.
"Not directly."
"Indirectly?"
"He encouraged me to post things Ryan would have trouble explaining."
"Photographs?"
"Hotel dinners. Gifts. A bracelet."
"Why?"
"He said secrets become leverage only after the other person starts suspecting them."
Maya wrote down the sentence.
Sabrina continued.
"Ryan hated that."
"Yet he kept seeing you."
"Yes."
"Did he ever ask you to stop posting?"
"Constantly."
Charlotte understood another part of Victor's method.
He had not merely collected weaknesses.
He cultivated collisions between them.
Ryan wanted ambition and secrecy.
Sabrina wanted status and recognition.
Victor benefited whenever those desires fought each other.
"You thought Ryan would leave me after the board vote."
Sabrina nodded.
"He promised he would."
"And Victor promised you business."
Another nod.
"A national hospitality contract after Ryan became president."
Maya looked up sharply.
"Do you have that promise in writing?"
"On the phone."
That gave the forensic team a second motive trail.
Sabrina had not simply received suspicious money.
She had been promised a future contract tied to a change in Bennett Global control.
Charlotte looked at the evidence bag.

The little black phone had become more valuable than every diamond Sabrina wore the night before.
