Chapter 5 - The Woman on the Deed.

Ryan recovered quickly because arrogance had become a reflex.
He wheeled a black suitcase out of the elevator while Sabrina followed wearing oversized sunglasses and last night's confidence.
"You are still here."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Good morning."
Sabrina lowered her sunglasses.
"That is almost sad."
Ryan glanced toward the front desk.
"Ethan."
Ethan stepped forward.
"Good morning, Mr. Collins."
"Call security."
Marcus Lee was standing less than twenty feet away, but Ryan did not recognize him as the security director.
"Sir?"
"My wife is refusing to leave."
Charlotte said nothing.
"I told her last night that if she was still here this morning, I wanted her escorted out."
Ethan's gaze moved briefly to Charlotte.
"Yes, sir."
Ryan mistook professionalism for obedience.
"So do it."
Sabrina smiled.
"Finally."
Marcus approached.
Ryan pointed toward Charlotte without looking at him.
"Take her outside."
Marcus stopped beside Ethan.
"I can't do that, sir."
Ryan turned.
"Excuse me?"
"Ms. Bennett has every right to remain on the property."
"She isn't a guest."
"That is correct."
Ryan's mouth tightened.
"Then what exactly is the problem?"
Charlotte answered.
"The problem is you keep confusing guest access with authority."
Ryan laughed.
"Charlotte, don't start."
"You threatened to have security remove me."
"And I still will."
Sabrina shifted her handbag onto her shoulder.
"Ryan, we have a car waiting."
"One minute."
He looked at Marcus.
"Who is your supervisor?"
Marcus did not blink.
"For hotel security, me."
Ryan pointed toward Ethan.
"Then ask the general manager."
Ethan spoke quietly.
"The general manager is upstairs with the board."
Ryan froze.
"What board?"
"Bennett Global Hospitality Group."
The words landed harder than Charlotte expected.
Ryan's eyes moved to her.
Then back to Ethan.
"Why is Bennett Global holding a board meeting here?"
Charlotte let the silence answer first.
Sabrina's expression changed.
She remembered Ethan's face from the night before.
"Ryan."
Her voice had lost its amusement.
"We should go."
He ignored her.
"Charlotte, what did you do?"
"I asked for a meeting."
"You asked?"
"Yes."
Ryan laughed once, too loudly.
"You called a corporate board meeting?"
"Yes."
"And they came?"
"Yes."
The private boardroom door opened at the far end of the lobby.
Daniel Harrison walked out first.
Ryan recognized him immediately.
Every senior executive at Bennett Global did.
Daniel was followed by Caroline Wu, Samuel Price, and three other directors.
They stopped behind Charlotte.
Ryan's face emptied.
Daniel looked at him with undisguised disgust.
"Good morning, Ryan."
"Mr. Harrison."
Ryan straightened automatically.
"I wasn't aware you were in New York."
"You weren't supposed to be aware."
Sabrina took one small step away from Ryan.
Charlotte noticed.
Ryan noticed too.
"What's going on?"
Charlotte reached into her pocket.
For one second Ryan seemed to think she might pull out her wedding ring.
Instead, she removed the folded ten-dollar bill.
She placed it on the reception desk.
"Last night Sabrina gave me this."
Sabrina's face tightened.
"This is ridiculous."
Charlotte looked at her.
"You told me to buy lunch."
"It was a joke."
"Was it?"
"A bad one."
"We agree on that."
Ryan stepped between them.
"Whatever happened last night is personal."
Daniel spoke.
"The three point seven million dollars in questionable corporate spending is not personal."
Ryan's head snapped toward him.
"What?"
"Project Northstar."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"My cloned approval token."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You accessed the archive at eleven twenty-three last night."
Ryan stared.
Daniel continued.
"You attempted a transfer at two thirty-four this morning."
"That was a legitimate vendor payment."
"To Eastbridge Events?"
"Yes."
"For a suspended project?"
"Accounting timing issue."
"Using my authorization?"
Ryan hesitated.
"The system approved it."
Daniel's expression became almost pitying.
"No, Ryan."
"What do you mean?"
"The system showed you an approval."
Ryan's face changed.
Charlotte watched the exact moment he understood that his actions had been observed.
"You trapped me."
"No," Charlotte said.
"We preserved what you chose to do."
Sabrina turned toward the doors.
Marcus moved slightly, not blocking her but making his presence clear.
Maya Patel emerged from the corridor.
"Ms. Monroe, no one is detaining you."
Sabrina stopped.
"Then I'm leaving."
"You may."
Maya held up a document.
"But you should know that Bennett Global has placed a litigation hold on all records related to Monroe Brand Advisory."
Sabrina's face went pale.
"Talk to my lawyer."
"We will."
Ryan looked at Charlotte again.
"How are you involved in this?"
She studied him.
Four years of marriage stood behind the question.
He still did not know.
Or perhaps he had never wanted to know anything that did not confirm the version of her he preferred.
"You really never asked what my father invested in."
Ryan frowned.
"What does your father have to do with this?"
Daniel's voice was flat.
"He founded Bennett Global."
Ryan went completely still.
Sabrina whispered something Charlotte could not hear.
Charlotte continued.
"After he died, the voting trust transferred to me."
Ryan shook his head.
"No."
"Yes."
"You told me your father was an investor."
"He was."
"You said you didn't work for the company."
"I said I didn't hold an operating job."
Ryan looked from Charlotte to the directors behind her.
"This is some kind of performance."
Caroline Wu stepped forward.
"Charlotte Bennett is chair of the Bennett Global board and controlling shareholder of Bennett Global Hospitality."
Ryan's lips parted.
No words came out.
Sabrina stared at Charlotte as if seeing a completely different person occupying the same clothes.
"The hotel?" Ryan finally asked.
Charlotte looked around the lobby.
"Bennett Global Hospitality owns the Monarch Grand through Monarch Property Holdings."
"You own this building?"
"My family company controls it."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Charlotte almost laughed.
"You mean before or after you threw money at my feet?"
"I didn't throw it."
Sabrina's head turned toward him.
Charlotte's voice stayed calm.
"Thirty cameras disagree."
Ryan swallowed.
"Charlotte, we need to speak privately."
"We had four years to speak privately."
"This is our marriage."
"It was."
The words struck him harder than the corporate revelation.
He took a step closer.
"I made mistakes."
"Seventeen penthouse stays are not a mistake."
His face changed again.
"You checked?"
"The key-card records did."
Sabrina looked at him.
"Seventeen?"
Ryan ignored her.
Charlotte continued.
"Nine hundred thousand dollars to Monroe Brand Advisory is not a mistake either."
Now Sabrina stepped forward.
"That money was for legitimate consulting."
"Then the audit will confirm that."
"It will."
Maya spoke softly.
"Good."
Sabrina looked at her.
"Why did you say it like that?"
Maya did not answer.
Ryan's eyes dropped to the folded ten-dollar bill.
"So what now?"
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
He handed Ryan a sealed envelope.
"Effective immediately, your system access is suspended pending investigation."
Ryan did not take it.
"You can't do that."
Daniel held the envelope steady.
"The board already did."
"I have a contract."
"And the company has an audit committee."
Ryan looked at Charlotte.
"You're firing me because I cheated on you."
"No."
Her voice sharpened for the first time.
"If I were making a marital decision, I would call a divorce lawyer."
She pointed to the envelope.
"This is a corporate decision based on forged approvals, unauthorized expenditures, and destruction attempts."
Ryan's eyes flickered.
"Destruction attempts?"
"You tried to delete an invoice at two thirty-one."
He looked away.
Sabrina saw it.
Charlotte saw her see it.
The alliance between them developed its first visible crack.
Ryan finally took the envelope.
"You planned this."
"I planned lunch."
Charlotte picked up the ten-dollar bill.
"You planned the rest."
The lobby had filled with morning guests, but the staff had discreetly maintained distance.
No one laughed now.
Ryan's car waited outside.
His penthouse bags stood beside him.
His company access was frozen.
His mistress was staring at him with suspicion.
And the wife he had called embarrassing stood in canvas shoes at the center of a building his salary could never buy.
Ryan lowered his voice.
"Please."
It was the first gentle word he had spoken to her in months.
Charlotte felt nothing from it.
"Please what?"
"Don't do this here."
She remembered exactly what he had said the night before.
Don't make a scene.
She could have repeated it.
She did not.
"Go home, Ryan."
His face twisted.
"To Boston?"
"No."
Charlotte looked toward the doors.
"Anywhere that isn't mine."
He stared at her.
Then Sabrina spoke from behind him.
"Ryan."
He turned.
She held the gold penthouse access card between two fingers.
"You told me you were about to become partner."
"I am."
Daniel almost smiled.
Sabrina looked at the directors.
Then at Charlotte.
Then back at Ryan.
"Were you lying about that too?"
Ryan's silence was answer enough.
Sabrina dropped the gold key card onto his suitcase.
"Call me when you figure out which part of your life is real."
She walked toward the exit alone.
Ryan watched her go.
Charlotte thought that would be the end of the morning.
Then Marcus's phone vibrated.
He read the message and immediately approached Charlotte.
"Madam Chair."
His voice was low.
"We have a problem upstairs."
"What kind?"
Marcus glanced at Ryan.
"Someone accessed the penthouse safe at 4:58 a.m."
Ryan's face changed before Marcus finished.
Charlotte saw it.
"What was in the safe?"
Ryan said nothing.
Marcus answered.
"A company laptop registered to Victor Hale."
Charlotte turned slowly toward her husband.

The humiliation in the lobby had just become the least important thing Ryan Collins had done.
