Chapter 4 - Before Sunrise.

By 2:00 a.m., the Monarch Grand was divided into two different worlds.

On the forty-seventh floor, Ryan Collins slept beside Sabrina in sheets that cost more than his first car.

On the third floor, seven board members sat around a walnut table studying evidence that could destroy careers.

Charlotte stood at the head of the table in the same white shirt Sabrina had mocked downstairs.

No one mentioned her clothes.

No one laughed.

Victor Hale had not yet arrived.

That fact mattered more with every passing minute.

Maya Patel summarized the preliminary findings.

"We have at least three point seven million dollars in suspicious transactions, multiple forged approvals, shell vendors, and evidence that executive credentials were cloned."

Board member Caroline Wu folded her hands.

"Do we know whether Collins acted alone?"

Daniel answered.

"No."

"Do we believe he did?"

Daniel glanced at Charlotte.

"No."

A retired hotel executive named Samuel Price leaned forward.

"What does Victor say?"

Charlotte kept her voice neutral.

"We have not spoken to him."

"Why not?"

"Because one of the encrypted accounts accessed by Ryan tonight was previously accessed from Victor's executive tablet."

The room changed.

Samuel leaned back.

Caroline's expression sharpened.

Two directors exchanged glances.

Another board member, Jeffrey Sloan, spoke too quickly.

"That could be coincidence."

Charlotte turned toward him.

"It could."

Jeffrey looked relieved.

"Then we should be careful about implications."

"We are being careful."

Charlotte placed a printed page in front of him.

"That is why no accusation has been made."

Jeffrey looked down.

The document showed Sabrina's permanent vendor credential approved by Victor Hale.

His relief disappeared.

"I see."

At 2:18, Victor finally called.

Daniel put him on speaker.

"Victor, where are you?"

A pause followed.

"Home."

Charlotte looked at the location report Marcus had quietly placed beside her.

Victor's company phone was not at his home in Greenwich.

It was moving south on the West Side Highway.

"We need you at the Monarch."

Victor's voice tightened.

"At two in the morning?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Charlotte answered.

"There is an emergency board review."

Another pause.

"Charlotte?"

"Good morning, Victor."

"What happened?"

"You can ask when you arrive."

His tone shifted immediately into fatherly concern.

"Are you all right?"

The question almost impressed her.

"I will be better when you get here."

"Give me an hour."

"You have thirty minutes."

Charlotte ended the call.

Samuel Price watched her.

"You know he's not at home."

"Yes."

"Do you know where he is?"

Marcus answered from the wall.

"His phone is approaching a private aviation terminal in Teterboro."

No one spoke.

Caroline Wu looked at the clock.

"Then thirty minutes was generous."

Charlotte nodded.

"That was intentional."

At 2:26, Ryan's device attempted another Northstar access.

At 2:31, it tried to delete a draft invoice.

The shadow system preserved the deletion attempt.

At 2:34, Ryan requested a transfer of two hundred forty thousand dollars to Eastbridge Events.

Daniel allowed the transaction to appear approved on Ryan's screen while actually freezing it inside a quarantine account.

At 2:36, a text arrived on Ryan's phone from Victor Hale.

Marcus could not read the message without a warrant or device access.

He could, however, see the timing through network metadata.

"Victor contacted him."

Charlotte looked toward the door.

"Then Victor knows we are moving."

Maya closed her laptop.

"We need outside counsel and law enforcement ready."

"Prepare the referral package."

"Already started."

At 2:42, Victor's phone stopped moving.

Marcus checked the location.

"Teterboro."

Samuel muttered something under his breath.

Charlotte picked up her own phone.

"Call our aviation department."

Daniel did.

The night dispatcher answered on the second ring.

No Bennett Global aircraft had been scheduled.

However, Victor Hale's assistant had requested a private charter to Montreal at 1:51 a.m. using an outside broker.

The flight was scheduled for 3:10.

Caroline looked at Charlotte.

"He's leaving."

"Maybe."

"What else would you call it?"

Charlotte's eyes rested on the boardroom door.

"A mistake."

At 2:47, Victor's phone began moving again.

Not toward a runway.

Back toward Manhattan.

Samuel smiled faintly.

"He changed his mind."

Charlotte shook her head.

"Someone told him running would look worse."

The question was who.

At 3:03, the penthouse called the front desk.

Ethan answered personally.

Ryan wanted the hotel to arrange a car for 5:30 a.m.

Destination: LaGuardia Airport.

Two passengers.

Charlotte listened from the boardroom extension.

"What flight?" Ethan asked.

"None of your concern," Ryan replied.

"Of course, sir."

Ethan hung up.

"He is planning to leave before breakfast."

Charlotte looked at Maya.

"Can we stop him?"

"Not legally, unless law enforcement directs it."

"Then we don't stop him."

Daniel frowned.

"What if he gets on a plane?"

"He thinks the problem is me."

Charlotte touched the folded ten-dollar bill lying beside her ring.

"If he sees me in the lobby at five-thirty, he won't leave."

Samuel raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

"Because he will want to win one more time."

At 3:21, Victor Hale walked into the boardroom wearing a navy overcoat over clothes that looked hastily chosen.

He smiled as though he had arrived for an inconvenient breakfast meeting.

"What on earth is going on?"

Charlotte watched him take in the room.

His eyes paused on Maya Patel.

Then Daniel's computers.

Then Marcus Lee.

The smile weakened.

"Sit down, Victor."

He remained standing.

"I would prefer an explanation first."

Charlotte slid Sabrina's vendor credential across the table.

"You approved this."

Victor looked at it for half a second too long.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Monroe Brand Advisory was recommended for luxury positioning work."

"By whom?"

"I don't remember."

"Try."

Victor looked at Daniel.

"Is this an interrogation?"

"No," Charlotte said.

"Then why is security here?"

"Because three point seven million dollars has moved through forged approvals."

Victor's face remained controlled.

"And you think Sabrina Monroe is involved?"

Charlotte noticed he used her first name.

Not Ms. Monroe.

Maya noticed too.

"Do you know her personally?" Maya asked.

Victor looked at her.

"Professionally."

"How well?"

"Enough to approve a vendor credential."

Charlotte leaned forward.

"Did you give Ryan Collins access to a cloned Daniel Harrison token?"

Victor's anger appeared instantly.

"Absolutely not."

"Did you access an encrypted cloud account that Ryan used tonight?"

A pause.

"I access dozens of secure accounts."

"This one?"

Daniel rotated a screen.

Victor looked at the device fingerprint.

"I don't recognize it."

"It came from your executive tablet."

"Then someone used my tablet."

"Who?"

"I have no idea."

Charlotte let the silence stretch.

Victor recovered first.

"Charlotte, your husband has clearly behaved disgracefully."

The word husband was carefully chosen.

"I understand why you're upset."

Caroline Wu's expression cooled.

Victor continued.

"But we should not let a painful personal betrayal turn into institutional panic."

Charlotte sat back.

There it was.

The move she had expected.

Reduce evidence to emotion.

Reduce her authority to a wounded wife's reaction.

"You think I'm panicking?"

"I think you are under extraordinary strain."

"You attempted to charter a flight to Montreal ninety minutes ago."

Victor's face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

"That was personal."

"At two in the morning?"

"My sister is ill."

"Your sister is currently in Palm Beach."

Victor stared at her.

Marcus had checked.

Charlotte continued.

"You can insult me, Victor."

"Charlotte, I would never-"

"But don't insult the room."

No one moved.

Victor finally sat.

At 4:10, outside counsel joined by secure video.

At 4:42, the board voted unanimously to suspend Victor's system access pending investigation.

Jeffrey Sloan abstained.

Charlotte noticed.

At 5:02, Marcus reported movement in the penthouse.

Ryan and Sabrina were awake.

At 5:16, they requested their final bill.

At 5:24, the private elevator began descending.

Charlotte stood.

Daniel looked at her.

"You don't have to do this in the lobby."

"Yes, I do."

"Why?"

Charlotte slid the wedding ring into her pocket beside the ten-dollar bill.

"Because that is where he decided who I was."

She walked out of the boardroom.

The directors followed at a distance.

When Charlotte reached the lobby, dawn had begun turning the glass doors pale blue.

Ethan stood behind reception.

Marcus waited near the security desk.

Victor remained upstairs with Maya.

The elevator indicator moved down from forty-seven.

Forty-two.

Thirty-six.

Twenty-eight.

Ryan had threatened to have Charlotte removed if she was still in the lobby by morning.

She positioned herself beside the exact spot where Sabrina's ten-dollar bill had landed.

The elevator reached three.

Then two.

Then lobby.

The gold doors opened.

Ryan stepped out smiling.

May you like

The smile vanished when he saw that Charlotte had not gone home.
