Chapter 6 - The Laptop in the Safe.

The Royal Penthouse looked different in daylight.

Without city lights reflected in the glass, it was simply a room full of expensive evidence.

Two room-service carts stood near the dining table.

An open bottle of Bordeaux rested in a silver bucket of melted ice.

Sabrina's lipstick marked one crystal glass.

Ryan's jacket lay across a chair.

The velvet engagement-ring catalog remained open beside a handwritten appointment card.

Charlotte entered with Maya Patel, Marcus Lee, and two members of the forensic team.

Ryan followed under escort from the lobby, furious that anyone had gone upstairs without him.

"That suite is still under my name."

Maya did not look at him.

"The suite belongs to the hotel."

"You know what I mean."

"Unfortunately, we do."

Marcus walked to the bedroom closet.

A steel safe was built into the wall behind a panel.

"The access log shows it opened at four fifty-eight this morning."

Charlotte turned toward Ryan.

"You were awake then."

"So?"

"Did you open it?"

"I used the safe."

"That wasn't the question."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

Marcus entered an override code while the forensic technician filmed the process.

The safe door clicked open.

Inside were a passport, two envelopes of cash, Sabrina's diamond bracelet, and a slim black laptop.

A small inventory tag on the underside carried the Bennett Global asset number.

BG-VH-0042.

Victor Hale.

Charlotte stared at it.

"How did Victor's laptop get into your penthouse safe?"

Ryan crossed his arms.

"He left it with me."

"When?"

"A few days ago."

"Why?"

"Work."

Maya's eyes narrowed.

"Be more specific."

"I don't answer to you."

"At the moment, you should assume every answer matters."

Ryan looked at Charlotte.

"Is this how it's going to be now?"

"You hid another executive's computer in a hotel safe."

"I didn't hide it."

"Then why was it in a safe?"

"Because it contains confidential material."

Charlotte almost smiled.

"For once, we agree."

The technician photographed the device where it sat before sealing it in an evidence bag.

Ryan stepped forward.

"You cannot access that without Victor's approval."

Maya finally looked directly at him.

"Victor is suspended, and the laptop belongs to the company."

Ryan stopped.

That answer disturbed him more than Charlotte expected.

"Suspended?"

"Pending investigation."

Ryan looked at Charlotte.

"You suspended Victor too?"

"The board did."

"This is insane."

"Maybe."

Charlotte looked at the laptop.

"But you still haven't explained why his computer was here."

Ryan turned away.

"Ask Victor."

"We will."

The forensic team began photographing the suite.

They found three hotel folios, a handwritten list of vendor names, and a business card for an offshore corporate-services firm in the Cayman Islands.

Ryan called the card meaningless.

Maya called it relevant.

Charlotte said nothing.

In the bedroom, a housekeeper named Elena Ruiz waited by the doorway with her supervisor.

She looked nervous.

Marcus approached her gently.

"Ms. Ruiz cleaned this suite yesterday?"

"Yes."

"Did you see this laptop?"

Elena hesitated and looked at Ryan.

Ryan's expression hardened.

Charlotte noticed.

"You may answer freely," she said.

Elena looked at Charlotte, then at Marcus.

"The laptop was on the desk when I came in yesterday afternoon."

"Was Mr. Collins present?"

"No."

"Ms. Monroe?"

"She was in the bathroom."

"Anyone else?"

Elena swallowed.

"An older man."

Ryan interrupted.

"This is ridiculous."

Maya raised one hand.

"Do not answer for the witness."

Elena continued.

"Gray hair."

"Did you hear his name?"

"Mr. Hale."

The room became very quiet.

Ryan glared at the housekeeper.

"You have no idea who that was."

Elena recoiled.

Charlotte stepped between them without thinking.

"Ryan."

Her voice was low.

He looked at her.

"You do not speak to my staff that way."

The word my hit him again.

His face tightened.

"Your staff."

"Yes."

Elena looked relieved.

Marcus continued the interview.

"Did you see what Mr. Hale was doing?"

"They were arguing."

"About what?"

"I didn't stay in the room."

"Did you hear anything?"

Elena thought carefully.

"Mr. Hale said, 'The numbers have to disappear before the quarter closes.'"

Maya's pen stopped.

"Anything else?"

"Mr. Collins said, 'Sabrina has the backups.'"

Ryan stepped forward again.

"She's lying."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Why would she?"

"Because you told her what to say."

Elena's face flushed.

Charlotte remained calm.

"I met Ms. Ruiz thirty seconds ago."

"You're the owner."

"Which makes every employee automatically willing to commit perjury for me?"

Ryan had no answer.

Maya asked Elena to provide a written statement.

After she left, Charlotte turned toward Ryan.

"What backups?"

"I don't know."

"You said Sabrina had them."

"I never said that."

"We will see what the cameras picked up."

"There aren't cameras inside guest rooms."

"Correct."

Ryan smiled faintly.

It was the first sign of confidence he had shown upstairs.

Charlotte saw it and understood something important.

Whatever happened in the penthouse mattered because he believed it had happened beyond surveillance.

The forensic technician approached Daniel, who had joined by secure video.

"We can image the laptop without altering the original drive."

Daniel nodded.

"Do it."

Ryan laughed.

"You think a laptop is going to save you?"

Charlotte turned.

"Save me from what?"

His smile vanished.

He had said too much.

"From embarrassing yourself."

"Try again."

"I don't have to."

Maya quietly wrote down the exchange.

At 7:12 a.m., the first forensic image began.

At 7:26, the technician discovered that the laptop's main drive had been wiped less than three hours earlier.

The time stamp was 4:59 a.m.

One minute after the safe opened.

Charlotte looked at Ryan.

"You wiped it."

"I don't know anything about computers."

The technician shook his head.

"The wipe command came from a hardware recovery key inserted locally."

Maya asked, "Was the recovery key found?"

Marcus checked the evidence inventory.

"No."

Ryan shrugged.

"Then maybe Victor took it."

"Victor wasn't here at four fifty-nine," Charlotte said.

Ryan smiled.

"Prove it."

That confidence again.

Charlotte felt a cold thread of certainty.

Ryan believed the destruction had worked.

The technician looked up from the laptop.

"Actually, we may not need to prove who wiped it yet."

Ryan's gaze snapped toward him.

"Why?"

"Because the device has an enterprise backup agent."

Daniel's face appeared on the tablet screen.

"All executive devices do."

The technician nodded.

"If it was online before the wipe, there may be a full snapshot on Bennett's remote vault."

Ryan's expression changed.

Charlotte watched it happen.

Not anger.

Fear.

Daniel was already typing.

"Last successful backup was at four forty-three this morning."

Maya leaned forward.

"Sixteen minutes before the wipe."

"Correct."

Charlotte looked at Ryan.

"You should have asked more questions about the company you were stealing from."

He went pale.

At 8:03, Daniel restored the first directory listing from Victor's laptop.

There were thousands of ordinary files.

Budgets.

Property reports.

Board materials.

Then a folder appeared with no business title.

It was named TEN DOLLARS.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

"Open it."

The folder required a second password.

The forensic technician started working.

Ryan sat down abruptly on the edge of a chair.

Maya noticed.

"Do you know what's in that folder?"

"No."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Then why did you sit down?"

Ryan said nothing.

The password broke twenty-seven minutes later.

Inside were spreadsheets, scanned approvals, photographs of signed documents, and audio files.

The earliest file was dated eleven months earlier.

The latest had been created the previous evening at 6:41 p.m., before Charlotte entered the hotel.

Daniel opened the master spreadsheet.

The first row contained a list of code names.

Northstar.

Eastbridge.

Monroe.

Grayline.

Hale.

Collins.

A final column was labeled B.

Charlotte assumed B meant Bennett.

Then she saw the notes beside it.

B - CONTROL EVENT AFTER Q4.

Maya read over her shoulder.

"What is a control event?"

Daniel scrolled.

Another line appeared.

MARRIAGE LEVERAGE REMAINS VIABLE.

Charlotte stopped breathing.

Ryan looked away.

The investigation was no longer asking whether Ryan had stolen from Charlotte's company.

It was asking whether he had married her as part of the plan.

Charlotte asked Daniel to search Ryan's personnel file from the year they met.

The first application had been ordinary.

Ryan had joined Bennett Global through an outside recruiter and had no contact with Victor Hale for almost two years.

That fact mattered.

It meant Victor had not planted Ryan in Charlotte's life from the beginning.

Daniel found another record from eighteen months earlier.

Ryan's compensation had jumped by forty percent after an off-cycle promotion approved personally by Victor.

The promotion had no supporting performance memo.

Three weeks later, Ryan had asked Charlotte for the first time whether she would ever consider signing a family trust proxy so they could simplify estate planning.

Charlotte remembered laughing and telling him trusts were never simplified by signing them without lawyers.

Ryan had laughed too.

Now the conversation looked entirely different.

Maya asked the forensic team to build a timeline combining promotions, hotel stays, vendor payments, and attempts to obtain Charlotte's signature.

The lines began aligning with uncomfortable precision.

Every time Ryan received a career reward, another request followed at home.

A signature.

A calendar detail.

A question about Charlotte's board travel.

A suggestion that she take a longer break from work.

Charlotte stared at the pattern.

"He didn't marry me for the company."

Daniel looked at her carefully.

"That is what the evidence suggests so far."

"But he stayed willing to trade the marriage once he saw what it could buy."

Maya closed the file.

"That distinction may matter to your heart."

Charlotte looked at the dark city beyond the glass.

"It does."

She wished it did not.

A marriage that had been fraudulent from day one would have been easier to bury.
