Chapter 13 - What Ryan Chose.

Ryan waited in a small private dining room on the second floor.
No crystal chandelier hung above him.
No skyline stretched behind him.
The room had one table, four chairs, and a pitcher of water.
Maya sat near the door.
Charlotte sat across from Ryan.
He looked older than he had the day before.
His burgundy suit was gone.
He wore the same white shirt from the penthouse, now wrinkled at the collar.
For the first time since Charlotte entered the Monarch, he looked ordinary.
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
Ryan looked at her wedding ring in her hand.
"Are you going to take that off?"
Charlotte set it on the table.
"I already did."
He looked away.
"I didn't marry you for Bennett Global."
Charlotte studied him.
"That is where you want to begin?"
"Because you think I did."
"For several hours, I did."
"I didn't know."
"Not when we married."
"No."
"When did you know?"
Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.
"Eighteen months ago."
"Victor told you."
"Yes."
"And what did you do after learning your wife controlled the company employing you?"
Ryan gave a bitter laugh.
"I went home and waited for you to tell me."
"You could have asked."
"I wanted to see if you trusted me enough to say it yourself."
Charlotte felt old frustration rise.
"You turned marriage into a secret test I didn't know I was taking."
"You had already done that to me."
"No."
Her voice sharpened.
"I kept my family's wealth private because I wanted one part of my life where people did not calculate my value before they knew me."
Ryan looked at her.
"I was your husband."
"Yes."
"You let me complain about executives at Bennett while you were chair of the board."
"I never interfered with your job."
"That's not the point."
"Then what is?"
His voice rose.
"I felt like a fool."
Charlotte stared at him.
There it was.
Not deprivation.
Humiliation.
Ryan had discovered that his quiet wife possessed more power than he imagined, and instead of asking why she protected that truth, he experienced her privacy as an insult to his status.
"So Victor offered you respect."
Ryan looked down.
"He offered me a path."
"To president?"
"Eventually."
"In exchange for my voting proxy."
"At first, yes."
"You tried to get me to sign it?"
"Twice."
Charlotte remembered two evenings when Ryan had casually brought home documents from the office and asked her to sign as witness to unrelated benefits forms.
She had refused because she never signed pages she had not read.
At the time, he had called her obsessive.
Now she understood why.
"Then you forged it."
"Victor did."
"With a photograph taken from my locked desk."
Ryan looked at Maya.
"Am I under oath?"
Maya answered.
"No."
"Then I am telling Charlotte what happened."
He looked back at her.
"I took the photograph."
Charlotte's chest tightened.
"Why?"
"Victor said he needed a formatting reference."
"And you believed that?"
"No."
The honesty was brutal.
"But you did it anyway."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Ryan's voice dropped.
"Because by then I wanted what he promised."
Charlotte looked at the man she had once loved enough to imagine growing old beside.
"Say it clearly."
Ryan swallowed.
"I wanted the presidency."
"More than you wanted your marriage?"
"At the time, I told myself I could have both."
"Of course you did."
Maya remained silent.
Ryan leaned forward.
"The affair came later."
Charlotte's expression did not change.
"Does that help you?"
"No."
"Good."
"Sabrina was hired for a brand project."
"Then you slept with her."
"Yes."
"Seventeen times in the penthouse?"
"Not every stay was with her."
Charlotte almost laughed at the absurd attempt at precision.
"That was not the correction you thought it was."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"Some stays were meetings with Victor."
Charlotte let him continue without helping.
"At first, Victor only wanted information," Ryan said.
"What kind?"
"When you traveled. Which directors you trusted. What issues made you angry."
"You reported on me."
"Yes."
"From our home?"
Ryan swallowed.
"Sometimes."
Charlotte felt Maya shift in her chair.
"Did you read my private messages?"
"Once."
"Once that you remember or once you want to admit?"
"Once."
"Which message?"
Ryan looked ashamed.
"A draft email to Caroline about removing Victor from the investment committee."
Charlotte remembered the draft.
She had never sent it because her evidence at the time was incomplete.
Victor somehow became unusually cooperative the following week.
Now she knew why.
"You warned him."
"Yes."
"And he rewarded you."
Ryan nodded.
"A bonus."
"How much?"
"One hundred thousand."
Charlotte sat back.
The betrayal had a price after all.
Not one dramatic payment, but a series of rewards that taught Ryan what his conscience was worth.
"What did you tell yourself when you took it?"
Ryan stared at the table.
"That I had earned it."
"For reading your wife's private email?"
"I told myself it was for my work."
"That is how corruption works, Ryan."
Her voice was quiet.
"It gives every ugly choice a cleaner name."
He nodded without looking up.
"I know."
"No. You know now."
She waited.
"What happened after the bonus?"
"Victor started asking for more."
"And you kept giving it."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because once I had taken the money, saying no felt like admitting what the money had been for."
Charlotte understood the trap.
Victor had not needed to control Ryan forever.
He only needed Ryan to cross the first line voluntarily.
After that, shame and self-protection did the rest.
"And some were with Sabrina."
"Yes."
"Did she know about the plan?"
"Pieces."
"Did she know you were trying to provoke me last night?"
"By the time we came downstairs, yes."
Charlotte thought of Sabrina dropping the ten-dollar bill.
"Was the money her idea?"
Ryan hesitated.
"Yes."
"Did you stop her?"
"No."
"Because you wanted me angry."
"Yes."
Charlotte looked at the ring on the table.
"And when I told you to pick it up?"
Ryan's eyes became wet.
"I almost did."
"But you didn't."
"Victor's photographer was there."
"So you chose the photograph."
Ryan said nothing.
"You chose the photograph over me."
"Yes."
The simple answer hurt more than a defense.
Charlotte let the silence stay.
Ryan finally spoke.
"I wanted out before yesterday."
"The recording confirms that."
"Victor had gone too far."
"When did 'too far' begin?"
"When he started moving money through Sabrina."
"Not when he forged my signature?"
Ryan flinched.
"I didn't know the full plan then."
"You knew enough."
"Yes."
"Not when he collected my therapy records?"
Ryan looked shocked.
"I didn't know about that."
Charlotte believed him.
The ledger suggested Victor kept portions of Harbor compartmentalized.
Believing Ryan did not help.
It simply made his betrayal more specifically his own.
"Why wipe the laptop?"
"Victor called me after your board meeting started."
"From Teterboro?"
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
"He said if the laptop survived, every one of us would be exposed."
"So you destroyed evidence."
"I tried."
"Why?"
Ryan looked at her for a long time.
"Because I was scared."
Charlotte nodded.
"That answer I believe."
He leaned back.
"I know you hate me."
"I don't know what I feel yet."
"I loved you."
Charlotte's throat tightened.
"Past tense?"
"No."
"Then don't use love as a defense for choices that required you to betray me repeatedly."
Ryan looked down.
"I know."
"Do you?"
"I'm beginning to."
Charlotte stood.
Ryan panicked.
"Wait."
She stopped.
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
"Victor has another account."
Maya leaned forward.
"Where?"
"Not a bank account."
"Then what?"
"A document vault."
"Physical or digital?"
"Both, I think."
"Location?"
"The old Bennett warehouse in Brooklyn."
Charlotte frowned.
Bennett Global had owned a records warehouse near Red Hook until operations moved years earlier.
The property was awaiting redevelopment.
"How do you know?"
"Victor took me there once."
"Why?"
"He wanted to show me how much material he had collected."
Charlotte felt cold.
"On me?"
"On everyone."
Ryan looked at Maya.
"Board members. Executives. Vendors. Politicians. Lenders."
Maya's face tightened.
"Leverage files."
"Yes."
Ryan looked at Charlotte.
"The ledger isn't his only insurance."
Charlotte did not answer immediately.
She studied the man across from her and tried to separate confession from strategy.
Ryan was helping because Victor had betrayed him too.
He was also helping because cooperation might reduce his own consequences.
Both motives could exist at once.
"Are you telling me about the warehouse because it is right," she asked, "or because it helps you?"
Ryan gave a tired smile.
"Both."
"At least that answer is honest."
"I don't have much left to bargain with."
"This is not a bargain with me."
"I know."
"Do you?"
Ryan looked at the wedding ring on the table.
"I spent eighteen months thinking every relationship was leverage."
He swallowed.
"Victor taught me that, but I was willing to learn."
Charlotte felt something in her anger loosen without becoming forgiveness.
Accountability sounded different when it stopped asking to be excused.
"Then keep telling the truth even when it does not help you," she said.
Ryan nodded.
"There is another name you need to know."
Maya lifted her pen.
"Who?"
"Owen Pike. The photographer."
"We know him."
"He wasn't only hired for the lobby."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
"What else?"
"He photographed you outside your therapist's office."
The message from earlier flashed through Charlotte's mind.
"Three years ago?"
"Victor kept him on retainer."
"Did you know that before today?"
"I saw the file six months ago."
"And you said nothing."
"No."
Charlotte closed her eyes for one second.
Every answer contained another choice he could have made differently.
"Anything else?"
"Pike also photographed two directors Victor wanted leverage on."
Maya wrote the names.
Ryan continued until there was nothing left he claimed to remember.
When he finished, the water in his glass was untouched.
"Why tell me now?"
"Because Victor will destroy it."
"And because you want credit for helping."
Ryan did not deny it.
Charlotte almost respected that.
"Do you know the access code?"
"No."
"Who does?"
Ryan took a breath.
"Sabrina."
Charlotte stared.
"Why Sabrina?"
"Victor trusted her more than he trusted me."
The door opened before Charlotte could respond.
Maya's colleague stepped inside.
"Ms. Monroe is asking to speak with Charlotte."
Maya asked, "About what?"
"She says she knows where Victor keeps the original Harbor archive."
Charlotte looked back at Ryan.
He gave a tired, bitter smile.
