CHAPTER 8 The Night Someone Tried to Steal the Truth

The alarm echoed across the storage facility.

Red emergency lights flashed above every exit.

Detectives shouted directions from opposite ends of the building.

“Lock the gates!”

“Cover the east entrance!”

“Nobody leaves!”

I instinctively held Maya closer against my shoulder.

She stirred slightly but didn’t wake.

Luke stepped in front of me.

“Stay behind us.”

Mark was already moving.

Years in corporate security had trained him to react before anyone else.

He sprinted toward the rear loading dock where two officers were chasing a shadow between the storage units.

Nathan stayed beside me.

His eyes never left Maya.

“She’s okay,” he whispered.

I nodded.

But my heart was racing.

Not because of the alarm.

Because of the phone call.

Justin didn’t hide the evidence from you.

He hid it to keep it away from Vanessa.

Those words kept repeating in my head.

Nothing made sense anymore.

If Justin had wanted to protect the evidence...

Why betray me?

Why defend Vanessa at the clinic?

Why threaten to take custody of Maya?

Every answer created three new questions.

Ten minutes later, the alarm stopped.

Mark returned with Detective Harris.

Both men looked frustrated.

“They got away,” Harris said.

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

“Did you see them?”

“Only from a distance.”

He removed a pair of latex gloves.

“They knew exactly where to go.”

Luke frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“They ignored every other storage unit.”

“They ran directly toward this one.”

The one containing Justin’s hidden files.

Rebecca crossed her arms.

“So someone knew these records existed.”

Harris nodded.

“And they knew where they were hidden.”

A chill ran down my spine.

That meant the break-in wasn’t random.

Someone had come looking for evidence.

Evidence we had already removed.

An evidence technician hurried toward Detective Harris carrying a small plastic bag.

“We found this.”

Inside was a black key card.

No name.

No company logo.

Only a silver number stamped into the corner.

A-117.

Rebecca’s eyes widened.

“I’ve seen those before.”

Luke looked at her.

“Where?”

“At the executive offices.”

“What are they?”

“Restricted access cards.”

“For what?”

She hesitated.

“There’s a private archive beneath company headquarters.”

Nathan frowned.

“A basement?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Not exactly.”

“It’s a secured records floor.”

Luke looked interested.

“I've never heard of it.”

“Most employees haven’t.”

“It stores confidential legal files.”

She looked at the key card again.

“Only a handful of executives have access.”

I swallowed.

“Justin?”

“I don’t know.”

“But someone connected to him definitely did.”

As officers finished processing the scene, Detective Harris approached me again.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“We searched the glove compartment of your husband’s vehicle.”

“And?”

“We found a second phone.”

I blinked.

“A burner phone?”

He nodded.

“It was hidden beneath the spare tire compartment.”

Luke immediately asked the obvious question.

“Was it locked?”

“Yes.”

“Can you access it?”

“Our digital forensics team is working on it now.”

Rebecca looked thoughtful.

“If that phone contains encrypted messaging...”

Harris finished her sentence.

“It could explain everything.”

We finally left the storage facility close to midnight.

Luke insisted that I stay at his house again.

“No arguments.”

“I wasn’t planning to argue.”

He smiled faintly.

“That’s good.”

For the first time in days, the drive was quiet.

No phone calls.

No reporters.

No police.

Only silence.

The next morning, I woke to the smell of coffee.

Nathan was already in the kitchen.

He smiled when he saw Maya crawling across a blanket on the floor.

“She’s feeling much better.”

I knelt beside my daughter.

She laughed as I kissed her forehead.

For a brief moment...

Everything felt normal.

Then Luke walked in carrying a newspaper.

His expression erased that feeling immediately.

“What happened?”

He placed the paper on the table.

Across the front page was a photograph of Justin leaving company headquarters.

The headline read:

LOCAL EXECUTIVE PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE DURING FINANCIAL INVESTIGATION

My stomach tightened.

“This is public?”

Luke nodded.

“Someone leaked it.”

Nathan skimmed the article.

“They don’t mention Vanessa.”

“Not by name,” Luke replied.

“But they reference another employee.”

I looked back at the photograph.

Justin looked exhausted.

His tie was crooked.

His shoulders slumped.

Reporters surrounded him.

He wasn't answering questions.

I had never seen him look so... defeated.

A strange emotion crept into my chest.

Not sympathy.

Just disbelief.

Only a week ago, he had seemed untouchable.

Now the entire city was watching him fall apart.

Luke’s phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Yes?”

He listened quietly.

Then looked toward me.

“We’re coming.”

He ended the call.

“Who was it?”

“Detective Harris.”

“What now?”

“They unlocked the burner phone.”

Everyone froze.

“What did they find?”

Luke looked unusually serious.

“Messages.”

“From Vanessa?”

He nodded.

“And someone saved under only one letter.”

“What letter?”

He answered slowly.

“R.”

Less than an hour later, we were back at the police department.

Detective Harris greeted us with a folder.

“Our forensic team recovered most of the deleted messages.”

He opened the file.

“There are hundreds.”

Rebecca scanned the first page.

“These aren’t personal conversations.”

Luke agreed.

“They read like instructions.”

Detective Harris nodded.

“Exactly.”

He handed me one printed message.

It was from Vanessa.

Keep Clara distracted until the transfer clears.

Another.

Don't discuss company business on your work phone.

Another.

R wants confirmation before Friday.

Every message was short.

Direct.

Careful.

Almost coded.

Nathan pointed at the initials again.

“Who is R?”

Detective Harris shook his head.

“We don’t know yet.”

Luke looked through another stack.

Then stopped.

“What?”

I asked.

He handed me a single page.

One message.

Sent by Justin.

Not Vanessa.

It read:

I won't involve Clara. Leave her and Maya out of this.

I stared at the paper.

Justin had written that.

Weeks before the clinic incident.

Rebecca quietly read over my shoulder.

“That changes things.”

Luke nodded slowly.

“It changes our assumptions.”

Not everything.

Justin had still lied.

Still cheated.

Still betrayed me.

Nothing erased that.

But this message suggested one thing I hadn’t expected.

At least once...

He had tried to keep Maya and me away from whatever this operation really was.

Detective Harris reached for another document.

“There’s one final message.”

He placed it on the table.

Unlike the others...

This one wasn’t from Vanessa.

It was from R.

Only nine words.

Nine words that silenced the entire room.

If she becomes a problem, we'll handle the wife ourselves.

I felt every drop of blood drain from my face.

Nobody spoke.

Nathan slowly pushed his chair back.

Luke’s jaw clenched so tightly I thought he might break a tooth.

Detective Harris looked directly at me.

“Mrs. Reynolds…”

“Yes?”

“Starting today…”

“You and your daughter will not be staying anywhere without police protection.”

May you like

Because whoever R was…

They had just become the most dangerous person in the entire investigation.
