CHAPTER 5 The Envelope That Turned Their Confidence Into Panic

CHAPTER 5 The Envelope That Turned Their Confidence Into Panic

No one moved.

From the upstairs window, we watched Justin stare at the papers inside the envelope as if they had just erased his future.

Vanessa leaned over his shoulder.

Her confidence disappeared almost instantly.

She grabbed the documents with both hands.

Her eyes raced across the page.

Then she looked at the two men standing beside the black SUV.

She was saying something.

Fast.

Desperate.

One of the men answered without changing his expression.

Even from inside the house, I could tell he wasn't interested in excuses.

Mark quietly stepped away from the window.

"I'm getting closer."

Luke grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

"They could see me."

"They're not the priority."

Luke glanced at the cardboard box sitting on the nursery floor.

"This is."

He was right.

Whatever Justin had just received outside, the evidence inside this house mattered more.

Luke carefully placed the company files into evidence bags he kept in his briefcase.

Every document was photographed before it was touched.

Every USB drive was labeled.

Every receipt was organized.

He wasn't acting like my brother anymore.

He was acting like an attorney preparing for trial.

Nathan looked through another stack of papers.

"Luke."

"What?"

"I think you should see this."

Luke walked over.

Nathan handed him a spreadsheet.

Luke read it silently.

Then his eyebrows lifted.

"What is it?" I asked.

Luke looked at me.

"These aren't personal expenses."

"What do you mean?"

"They're company reimbursements."

I frowned.

"For what?"

He flipped through several pages.

"Luxury travel."

"Private dinners."

"Real estate inspections."

He shook his head.

"Except none of these locations match company projects."

Nathan pointed to another column.

"Look at the dates."

Luke compared them with another document.

His expression darkened.

"The same weekends Justin told you he was attending executive retreats."

I remembered every one of those weekends.

I stayed home alone with Maya.

Sometimes pregnant.

Sometimes exhausted.

Sometimes sick.

Justin always apologized before leaving.

"This meeting could decide my promotion."

"I'll make it up to you."

"I wish I didn't have to go."

I believed every word.

Now those memories collapsed under the weight of the truth.

There had never been executive retreats.

There had been weekends with Vanessa.

Paid for by someone else.

Mark suddenly whispered.

"They're coming inside."

Everyone froze.

Car doors slammed shut.

Footsteps approached the front porch.

Luke quickly closed the evidence box.

"Take Maya."

I immediately picked up my daughter.

She had slept through everything.

Thank God.

Luke nodded toward the guest bedroom.

"If they come upstairs, stay behind me."

The front door opened.

Justin's voice echoed through the house.

"I know someone was here."

Vanessa answered quietly.

"The lights are on."

Another unfamiliar voice interrupted.

"Mr. Reynolds."

It was one of the suited men.

"You told us this property would be empty."

"It was supposed to be."

My heartbeat quickened.

The footsteps entered the living room.

Luke motioned for everyone to stay silent.

We listened.

The strangers spoke first.

"Our legal department requires immediate access to all company property."

Justin sounded irritated.

"I've already told you everything company-related is in my office."

The man replied calmly.

"Then you won't mind if we verify that."

Office?

I remembered something.

The cardboard box.

It wasn't in Justin's office.

It had been hidden in Maya's nursery.

Why?

Mark seemed to be thinking the same thing.

He leaned toward Luke.

"They don't know about the box."

Luke nodded once.

"Exactly."

Downstairs, drawers opened.

Cabinet doors slammed.

Someone was searching the house.

Vanessa spoke next.

"What if Clara took something?"

Justin answered immediately.

"She wouldn't know what to look for."

I almost laughed.

He still underestimated me.

The same mistake.

Again.

Nathan quietly shook his head.

"He never learns."

The search downstairs continued for nearly twenty minutes.

Then one of the strangers spoke again.

"We're done."

Justin sounded frustrated.

"That's it?"

"For today."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you'll receive additional instructions tomorrow."

Silence.

Then came words none of us expected.

"Effective immediately, your access to all corporate systems has been suspended."

Nobody upstairs moved.

Justin's voice rose instantly.

"You can't do that."

"It's already been done."

"My projects—"

"Are no longer your responsibility."

"My clients—"

"Will be reassigned."

"My office—"

"Has been secured."

Another pause.

Then the man delivered what sounded like the final blow.

"And we strongly recommend you retain personal legal counsel."

The front door closed.

The SUV drove away.

For nearly a full minute, the house remained completely silent.

Then something crashed downstairs.

A vase.

Justin had thrown it against the wall.

Another crash followed.

Then another.

Vanessa tried to calm him.

"This isn't over."

He shouted back.

"No."

"It is."

I had never heard his voice sound like that before.

Not angry.

Terrified.

Mark carefully looked through the hallway railing.

"They're in the kitchen."

Luke nodded.

"We leave now."

We quietly carried the evidence downstairs through the back staircase that connected to the laundry room.

The back door opened without making a sound.

Within seconds, we were outside.

No one noticed us.

Not Justin.

Not Vanessa.

They were too busy arguing.

As we reached Mark's SUV, I looked back at the house.

Eight years.

Eight years of birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

Family dinners.

Late-night conversations.

Plans.

Dreams.

Promises.

All disappearing behind one front door.

Luke placed the evidence box in the back of his vehicle.

"This doesn't stay with me."

I looked confused.

"Why not?"

"Because if this becomes evidence, chain of custody matters."

He pulled out his phone.

"I'm calling someone."

"Who?"

"A forensic accountant."

Thirty minutes later, we met at a secure office building downtown.

The forensic accountant introduced herself.

"My name is Rebecca Collins."

She shook each of our hands.

Luke trusted her.

That was enough for me.

Rebecca carefully opened the evidence box.

She examined the first few files.

Then stopped.

Her expression changed immediately.

"This..."

She looked at Luke.

"Where did you get these?"

Luke answered carefully.

"They were abandoned property."

Rebecca looked back at the documents.

"No."

She whispered almost to herself.

"This can't be right."

"What?"

She turned another page.

Then another.

Finally she looked directly at me.

"Mrs. Reynolds..."

"Yes?"

"I don't think your husband was stealing from the company."

Everyone in the room became quiet.

I frowned.

"What?"

Rebecca took a slow breath.

"I think someone was stealing through your husband."

Nobody spoke.

She spread several spreadsheets across the conference table.

"These signatures."

She pointed to one.

"They're Justin's."

Then another.

"This one isn't."

Luke leaned closer.

"You think they're forged?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Some of them."

She pulled another document from the box.

"This approval code belongs to a vice president."

She looked at Luke.

"But according to company records..."

She stopped speaking.

"What?"

Luke asked.

Rebecca swallowed.

"He died almost two years before this document was supposedly signed."

The room went completely silent.

Even Mark stopped taking notes.

Nathan slowly removed his glasses.

I stared at the papers in front of us.

Someone had forged company records.

Someone had used a dead executive's authorization.

Someone had built an elaborate financial scheme.

And somehow...

My husband was standing right in the middle of it.

Rebecca carefully closed the folder.

Then she looked at me with unmistakable concern.

"Mrs. Reynolds."

"Yes?"

"I don't think your family is dealing with an ordinary affair anymore."

"What do you think we're dealing with?"

She hesitated.

When she finally answered, her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I think you're looking at the early stages of a federal fraud investigation."

Before anyone could respond, Luke's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

He answered.

"This is Luke Carter."

A long silence followed.

Then he stood up.

"What?"

His face lost all color.

"When?"

Another pause.

"I'll be there immediately."

He ended the call.

I stood.

"What happened?"

Luke looked directly at me.

"The police just executed a search warrant."

My heart skipped a beat.

"At Justin's office?"

Luke slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Then where?"

His next words sent a chill through everyone in the room.

"At Vanessa's apartment."

May you like

"And they found something they weren't supposed to find."
