CHAPTER 4 The Security Footage Proved I Had Walked Into a Trap

I couldn't stop staring at the paused video.

Vanessa was smiling.

Not the nervous smile she wore after she slapped me.

Not the trembling expression she showed the police.

This smile was different.

It was confident.

Calculated.

Like someone who already knew how the story would end.

Mark rewound the footage.

"Watch her hands."

I leaned closer to the screen.

Vanessa glanced toward the clinic entrance.

She looked at her phone.

Then she quietly slipped it into her purse.

Exactly twelve seconds later, she looked at Justin.

She nodded.

Justin answered with a small nod of his own.

Then they separated.

Vanessa walked toward the waiting room.

Justin remained in the hallway.

Almost as if they had rehearsed where each of them needed to be.

Mark paused the video again.

"They communicated without speaking."

Luke folded his arms.

"That's not something people do by accident."

Nathan, who had been quietly reviewing Maya's medical records at the dining room table, finally looked up.

"How long before Clara walked inside?"

Mark checked the timestamp.

"Forty-three seconds."

The room fell silent.

I remembered every second of that morning.

Parking my car.

Taking Maya out of her car seat.

Adjusting her blanket.

Checking her temperature one more time.

Walking toward the entrance.

I hadn't interrupted them.

They had been waiting for me.

A chill ran through my body.

Luke turned to me.

"Tell me exactly what happened before Vanessa hit you."

I closed my eyes.

Trying to replay every detail.

"I walked in."

"I saw Justin."

"He looked surprised."

Mark immediately shook his head.

"No."

I opened my eyes.

"What?"

"He wasn't surprised."

Mark pointed at the video.

"He already knew you were coming."

I looked back at the frozen image.

He was right.

The cameras showed Justin looking toward the entrance before I ever opened the door.

He had been expecting me.

Which meant...

Everything after that had unfolded exactly as they intended.

Nathan stood up slowly.

"I've been thinking about something."

Luke looked at him.

"What?"

Nathan held up his phone.

"The timing."

"What about it?"

"The clinic appointment."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Nathan walked over.

"Maya's appointment was scheduled three weeks earlier."

"Yes."

"You booked it for ten o'clock."

I nodded.

"So?"

He looked at Justin's text message that I had saved.

"'Something came up. You can handle it yourself.'"

I stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

Nathan took a deep breath.

"What if nothing came up?"

Luke understood immediately.

"He already planned to be there."

Nathan nodded.

"With Vanessa."

My heart skipped a beat.

The appointment hadn't been interrupted.

It had been used.

Used to guarantee I would walk into that clinic at the exact moment they wanted.

Mark zoomed in on another section of the security footage.

"There."

He pointed toward the reception desk.

"The receptionist."

She briefly looked toward Justin.

Then toward the entrance.

Then back toward Justin.

Almost like she recognized him.

Luke noticed something else.

"Pause."

Mark stopped the video.

Luke leaned closer.

"What time did Justin arrive?"

Mark checked.

"9:21."

"And Clara?"

"9:58."

Luke looked at me.

"He waited thirty-seven minutes."

I felt sick.

No executive waits nearly forty minutes at a clinic unless they're expecting something.

Or someone.

Nathan crossed his arms.

"This wasn't a coincidence."

"No."

Luke agreed.

"It was a setup."

My phone suddenly buzzed.

An unknown number.

Normally, I wouldn't answer.

Today, I did.

"Hello?"

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman's voice whispered.

"Don't trust the pregnancy."

My entire body froze.

"What?"

The caller breathed heavily.

"Vanessa isn't telling the truth."

"Who is this?"

"You don't know me."

My heartbeat quickened.

"But I used to work with her."

I looked at my brothers.

They could tell something was wrong.

"What are you talking about?"

The woman lowered her voice even more.

"She lies professionally."

"What?"

"That's why they hired her."

I frowned.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

A pause.

"Ask for the ultrasound."

Then the line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Luke immediately reached for it.

"Who was it?"

"I don't know."

"What did she say?"

I repeated every word.

Nobody spoke for several moments.

Finally, Nathan broke the silence.

"The ultrasound."

Luke looked at him.

"What about it?"

Nathan's medical instincts had already taken over.

"If Vanessa really is seven or eight weeks pregnant..."

He stopped.

"Then there should be documentation."

Mark frowned.

"You think it's fake?"

Nathan shook his head.

"I don't know."

"But anonymous callers usually don't risk contacting attorneys unless they're terrified."

Luke nodded slowly.

"I'll subpoena the records."

I looked at him.

"Can we?"

"If this reaches family court, absolutely."

For the first time since the clinic incident, I felt a small shift.

Not relief.

Hope.

Because lies always leave footprints.

And the more Justin and Vanessa lied...

The more evidence they created.

That evening, I decided to return to the house one last time.

Not to reconcile.

Not to argue.

Only to collect Maya's remaining things.

Luke insisted on coming with me.

Mark followed in a separate vehicle.

When we arrived, Justin's car wasn't there.

Neither was Vanessa's.

I unlocked the front door.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

It no longer felt like home.

Every room reminded me of promises that no longer existed.

I walked upstairs.

Maya's bedroom looked untouched.

I packed her clothes.

Her favorite stuffed elephant.

Her baby monitor.

The rocking chair blanket my mother had sewn before she passed away.

As I opened the nursery closet, something caught my eye.

A small cardboard box pushed behind several storage bins.

I didn't recognize it.

I pulled it forward.

It was sealed with clear packing tape.

No label.

No writing.

Luke walked into the room.

"What is that?"

"I don't know."

I carefully cut the tape.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Not mine.

Not Justin's.

Company files.

Expense reports.

Corporate contracts.

Several USB drives.

And one envelope with Vanessa's name written across the front.

Luke immediately became serious.

"Don't touch anything else."

He put on disposable gloves from his briefcase.

Carefully opening the envelope, he removed several photographs.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

He handed me one picture.

I looked down.

It showed Justin.

Vanessa.

And another man I had never seen before.

The three of them were standing beside a luxury condominium.

Everyone was smiling.

The date printed in the corner was nearly a year old.

Months before Justin claimed he'd even met Vanessa.

I flipped over the photograph.

Written in blue ink were five simple words.

Our first successful investment together.

Investment?

I looked at Luke.

"This started before the affair."

Luke slowly nodded.

"I think the affair may not have been the original plan."

"What do you mean?"

He pointed toward the company documents.

"I think money came first."

I looked back at the photographs.

Then at the financial records.

Then at the USB drives.

Suddenly, I realized something terrifying.

The affair might not have destroyed Justin.

It might have been the thing that exposed a much bigger secret.

Before either of us could say another word, headlights swept across the front windows.

A car pulled into the driveway.

Mark looked out the window.

His face hardened.

"They're back."

I walked toward the bedroom window.

Justin stepped out of the driver's seat.

Vanessa climbed out of the passenger side.

Then another black SUV stopped behind them.

Two men in dark business suits got out.

Neither of them looked like friends.

Neither of them looked happy.

Justin glanced toward the house.

Then one of the suited men handed him a thick envelope.

Even from upstairs, I could see Justin's hands trembling as he opened it.

Seconds later, he stumbled backward.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

Whatever was inside that envelope...

It had terrified both of them.

And somehow, I knew one thing with absolute certainty.

May you like

The real war hadn't started at the clinic.

It had just arrived at my front door.
