CHAPTER 7 The Letter My Husband Never Expected Anyone to Read

No one said a word.

Every eye in the room was fixed on the letter in Detective Harris's hands.

For a long moment, the only sound was the hum of the fluorescent lights inside the storage facility.

I looked at Luke.

Then at Rebecca.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally, Detective Harris broke the silence.

"I'm going to read it exactly as it was written."

Luke nodded.

"Go ahead."

The detective unfolded the remaining pages.

The handwriting was unmistakably Justin's.

I had seen it for years.

Birthday cards.

Anniversary notes.

Shopping lists on our refrigerator.

The same handwriting that once wrote I love you was now about to reveal secrets I never imagined.

Detective Harris cleared his throat.

If you're reading this, someone betrayed me before I could tell the truth.

Everything is about to fall apart.

If I'm right, people will blame me first.

I deserve part of that blame.

But not all of it.

There are people involved who are far more dangerous than anyone realizes.

The detective paused.

Everyone remained silent.

He continued.

I made choices I regret.

I lied to my wife.

I betrayed my family.

Those are decisions I have to live with.

But I never intended for Clara or Maya to become targets.

I felt my chest tighten.

Targets?

Luke slowly folded his arms.

Detective Harris continued reading.

By the time you find this, I don't know whether I'll still be free... or alive.

Nathan looked up immediately.

"Alive?"

Rebecca frowned.

"This doesn't sound like a divorce letter."

"No," Luke agreed.

"It sounds like someone expecting retaliation."

The detective continued.

Everything started with one real estate project.

At first it looked legitimate.

Then money started moving through accounts that didn't make sense.

I asked questions I shouldn't have asked.

Instead of leaving, I stayed.

That was my biggest mistake.

I looked at Luke.

"Do you believe this?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"I don't know."

The detective read on.

Vanessa didn't introduce me to the operation.

She was already part of it before I met her.

Rebecca's eyes widened.

"So she wasn't recruited by Justin."

Luke nodded slowly.

"If this is true..."

"...he was recruited by her," Rebecca finished.

My mind struggled to keep up.

Nothing fit together anymore.

The affair.

The hidden money.

The forged documents.

The company investigation.

Now this.

The detective turned the page.

If anyone tells you Vanessa was only my mistress, they're lying.

She became my handler long before she became my girlfriend.

A heavy silence filled the room.

Handler?

Mark frowned.

"That's a strange word."

Luke agreed.

"It implies control."

Not romance.

Not partnership.

Control.

Detective Harris continued.

Every conversation was monitored.

Every decision was approved.

Every mistake had consequences.

Nathan looked puzzled.

"Who was monitoring him?"

The detective kept reading.

There are recordings.

There are payments.

There are people inside the company who know everything.

If they discover I've been collecting evidence, they'll come after everyone connected to me.

My heart began pounding.

Everyone connected to him.

Me.

Maya.

My brothers.

Luke immediately noticed the same thing.

He looked toward Detective Harris.

"When was this written?"

"About three weeks ago."

Three weeks.

Only three weeks before the clinic incident.

The detective reached the final page.

His expression became unusually serious.

"I think this next part is important."

Everyone leaned closer.

Clara...

If you ever read this, I know you'll never forgive me.

You shouldn't.

I failed you in every way that matters.

But one thing I need you to know is this...

The detective paused again.

I wasn't sure I wanted to hear the rest.

Still, he continued.

The day at the clinic was never supposed to happen.

You were never supposed to be there.

The room fell completely silent.

I felt every hair on my arms stand up.

Luke slowly turned toward me.

"Your appointment."

I nodded.

My voice barely worked.

"I was supposed to be there."

Detective Harris continued reading.

When I realized Clara had arrived, everything changed.

Vanessa ignored the instructions.

She confronted Clara anyway.

After that... everything spiraled out of control.

Rebecca frowned.

"What instructions?"

The letter answered.

The original plan was only to collect information.

No confrontation.

No violence.

No witnesses.

Nathan looked stunned.

"So Vanessa acted on her own?"

"Maybe," Luke said cautiously.

"Or maybe Justin wanted us to believe that."

Detective Harris folded the final page.

"That's all."

Nobody spoke.

I felt emotionally exhausted.

The letter raised more questions than it answered.

Justin admitted lying.

Admitted cheating.

Admitted betraying me.

But he also claimed something far more disturbing.

That someone else had been pulling the strings.

Luke finally broke the silence.

"I need this analyzed."

Detective Harris nodded.

"We already planned to."

"Handwriting."

"Ink."

"Paper."

"Fingerprints."

"Everything."

Rebecca quietly gathered the remaining financial files.

"There's something bothering me."

Luke looked at her.

"What?"

"If Justin truly planned to expose this operation..."

She tapped the letter.

"...why continue the affair?"

Nobody answered.

Because none of us had one.

At that exact moment, Detective Harris's phone rang.

He listened quietly.

Then his expression changed.

"What?"

A pause.

"When?"

Another pause.

"I'll inform them."

He ended the call.

Luke stepped forward.

"What happened?"

The detective looked directly at me.

"Your husband just reported a burglary."

I frowned.

"A burglary?"

"At your house."

Mark immediately shook his head.

"We were careful."

Luke looked confused.

"What was stolen?"

The detective slowly answered.

"According to Justin..."

"...someone broke into the nursery."

Every muscle in my body tightened.

The nursery.

The hidden box.

The evidence.

Justin knew.

He knew the files were gone.

Which meant he also knew someone had found them.

Luke grabbed his keys.

"We're leaving."

"Now."

As we hurried toward the parking lot, my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

"Hello?"

This time it wasn't a woman.

It was a man.

His voice was calm.

Almost emotionless.

"Mrs. Reynolds."

"Who is this?"

"You don't know me."

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What do you want?"

A brief silence followed.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Your husband didn't hide the evidence from you."

I stopped walking.

"What?"

"He hid it..."

"...to keep it away from Vanessa."

The line went dead.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Luke immediately noticed my face.

"What happened?"

I looked at him.

"I think..."

My voice shook.

"I think we're missing the biggest piece of this entire story."

Luke frowned.

"What piece?"

I stared at the dark highway ahead.

"The reason Justin was keeping secrets..."

"...may not be the reason we thought."

Behind us, the lights of the storage facility suddenly went dark.

Then a loud alarm echoed across the property.

Detectives began shouting.

Someone was running.

May you like

And whoever it was...

They were trying to escape with evidence before the truth could finally come to light.
