CHAPTER 6 The Search of Vanessa’s Apartment Uncovered More Than Anyone Expected

CHAPTER 6 The Search of Vanessa’s Apartment Uncovered More Than Anyone Expected
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
The room felt frozen.
I looked from Luke to Rebecca, searching for some sign that I had misunderstood.
“What did they find?”
Luke slipped his phone back into his pocket.

“I don't know yet.”
“Who called you?”
“A detective I've worked with before.”
“And?”
“He couldn't give details.”
Luke grabbed his briefcase.
“He only said the search changed the direction of the entire investigation.”
Rebecca frowned.
“That usually means they discovered evidence connected to another crime.”
My pulse quickened.
Another crime.
Until two days earlier, I believed my biggest problem was an unfaithful husband.
Now words like search warrant, forensic audit, and federal investigation had become part of my life.
Nathan stood.
“We're going with you.”
Luke nodded.
“Everyone stays together.”
An hour later, we arrived outside Vanessa's luxury apartment building.
The parking lot was filled with police vehicles.
Unmarked SUVs lined the curb.
Yellow crime scene tape blocked the front entrance.
Residents stood outside in small groups, whispering to one another.
Several reporters had already arrived.
Television cameras pointed toward the building.
News vans filled the street.
I pulled my baseball cap lower over my face.
The last thing I wanted was for Maya to end up on the evening news.
Luke spoke briefly with a detective near the entrance.
The detective recognized him immediately.
After several minutes, Luke returned.
“They'll let us inside.”
“Why?”
“They want to ask you a few questions.”
“Me?”
He nodded.
“Apparently your name came up.”
A knot formed in my stomach.
“My name?”
Luke placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
“Just answer honestly.”
“I always do.”
“I know.”
The apartment was much larger than I expected.
Modern furniture.
Floor-to-ceiling windows.
Designer artwork.
Everything looked expensive.
Far more expensive than a public relations executive should reasonably afford.
Detectives moved carefully through every room.
Evidence markers covered the floor.
Photographs were being taken from every angle.
One officer carried several laptops.
Another was boxing up financial records.
I noticed an open safe inside the master bedroom closet.
It was empty.
A detective approached us.
“Mrs. Reynolds?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Detective Harris.”
He offered a polite smile.
“I appreciate you coming.”
“I wasn't expecting this.”
“I imagine not.”
He opened a notebook.
“I only have a few questions.”
I nodded.
“Did you ever visit this apartment before today?”
“No.”
“Did your husband?”
I laughed quietly.
“I think we both know the answer.”
The detective smiled slightly.
“Yes.”
“We do.”
He continued writing.
“Did your husband ever mention investing in real estate with Ms. Cárdenas?”
“No.”
“Business partnerships?”
“Never.”
The detective closed his notebook.
“One last question.”
“Yes?”
“Did you know your husband's name was on the apartment lease?”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Luke looked equally surprised.
“The lease?”
Detective Harris nodded.
“Mr. Justin Reynolds is listed as a co-tenant.”
I stared at him.
“That can't be right.”
“We verified it this morning.”
My legs suddenly felt weak.
Justin hadn't simply been paying her rent.
He had legally tied himself to another home.
Another life.
Without telling me.
The detective watched my reaction carefully.
“I take it this is new information.”
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
As we prepared to leave, another investigator walked quickly toward Detective Harris.
He whispered something.
The detective's expression changed.
“What is it?” Luke asked.
Harris hesitated.
Then he looked at me.
“We found a storage unit key.”
“So?”
“It wasn't registered under Vanessa.”
“Whose was it?”
He looked down at his notes.
“Your husband's.”
Two hours later, police opened the storage unit.
It was located on the edge of Scottsdale.
An ordinary warehouse.
Nothing unusual from the outside.
Inside was another story.
Rows of labeled boxes.
Filing cabinets.
Computer equipment.
Old company records.
Rebecca slowly walked through the unit.
“This wasn't for personal storage.”
Luke agreed.
“It looks like someone built a private archive.”
Detectives photographed everything before opening a single box.
One by one, the contents came into view.
Financial ledgers.
Contracts.
External hard drives.
Blueprints.
Property appraisals.
Everything was meticulously organized.
Almost professionally.
Rebecca suddenly stopped beside one cabinet.
“Luke.”
“What?”
“Come here.”
She opened a drawer.
Inside were dozens of employee personnel files.
Luke frowned.
“Why would these be here?”
Rebecca carefully removed one folder.
“This isn't legal.”
Another folder.
Then another.
Finally she froze.
“What?”
Luke asked.
She handed him a file.
His face immediately hardened.
He turned toward me.
“Clara…”
“What is it?”
He held up the folder.
My name was printed across the front.
CLARA REYNOLDS
I felt every muscle in my body tense.
“Open it.”
Luke slowly did.
Inside were photographs.
Copies of my driver's license.
Medical records.
Credit reports.
Employment history.
Bank account summaries.
Even copies of my personal emails.
I couldn't breathe.
“What... is this?”
Rebecca looked horrified.
“Someone built a complete profile on you.”
Nathan turned another page.
“This goes back four years.”
Four years.
Long before Maya was born.
Long before Vanessa entered my life.
Luke carefully examined the documents.
“These weren't randomly collected.”
“No,” Rebecca agreed.
“They were organized.”
“For what?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Until Mark found something.
He reached into the back of the folder.
“There are handwritten notes.”
He unfolded a yellow legal pad.
Everyone leaned closer.
Across the top were six words.
Custody Risk Assessment — Clara Reynolds
The room fell silent.
Below the title were bullet points.
Strong relationship with child.
No criminal history.
Financially dependent on spouse.
Potential emotional vulnerability after childbirth.
Needs credibility reduced before legal action.
I felt physically sick.
This wasn't preparation for divorce.
This was preparation for war.
Nathan looked at me with disbelief.
“They were studying you.”
Luke's jaw tightened.
“No.”
He slowly folded the paper.
“They were building a strategy.”
Detective Harris walked over.
“You should probably see one more thing.”
He led us to another evidence table.
Several framed photographs had been removed from a sealed box.
Most showed Justin and Vanessa together.
Traveling.
Dining.
Attending charity events.
Living like a couple.
The oldest picture was dated eighteen months earlier.
Nearly a year before Justin claimed they had first met.
But one photograph stood out.
It wasn't romantic.
It showed Justin sitting across from a silver-haired man inside an upscale restaurant.
The man looked familiar.
Rebecca suddenly recognized him.
“Oh my God.”
“What?”
Luke asked.
She pointed at the photo.
“That man.”
“Yes?”
“He's not a businessman.”
“Who is he?”
Rebecca swallowed hard.
“He used to be the company's Chief Financial Officer.”
Nathan frowned.
“Used to be?”
Rebecca nodded.
“He resigned after an internal investigation.”
Luke looked back at the photograph.
“Was he charged?”
“No.”
“He disappeared.”
I stared at the smiling man in the picture.
“So Justin knew him?”
Rebecca answered quietly.
“Apparently much better than anyone realized.”
As detectives continued searching the storage unit, an officer rushed inside.
“Detective Harris!”
“What?”
“We found another hidden compartment.”
Everyone followed him.
Behind a false wall was a locked metal cabinet.
A locksmith forced it open.
Inside sat a single black binder.
Nothing else.
Detective Harris carefully opened it.
Every page contained names.
Dates.
Dollar amounts.
Property addresses.
At the very back was one sealed envelope.
Across the front, written in black ink, were seven chilling words.
Open Only If Something Happens To Me.
Nobody reached for it immediately.
The room became eerily quiet.
Finally, Detective Harris carefully broke the seal.
He unfolded the letter.
His eyes widened.
Then he looked directly at me.
“Mrs. Reynolds…”
“Yes?”
“I think you need to prepare yourself.”
“For what?”
He slowly lowered the paper.
“This letter wasn't written by Vanessa.”
I frowned.
“Then who wrote it?”
Detective Harris took a slow breath.
“It was written by your husband.”

And the very first sentence changed everything I thought I knew.
"If you're reading this, someone betrayed me before I could tell the truth."
