Chapter 19: The Person Who Betrayed Us All

Chapter 19: The Person Who Betrayed Us All

I stared at my phone long after the call ended.

Nathan’s final words echoed through my mind.

The person who took your mother was someone you call family.

Someone I call family.

Those words felt heavier than any accusation.

Because family was supposed to mean safety.

Trust.

Protection.

Not secrets.

Not betrayal.

Not the disappearance of the woman who gave me life.

I looked at the document on my desk.

Nathan’s signature.

My mother’s agreement.

A piece of evidence that changed everything.

For years, I believed the people around me were protecting me from the truth.

But now I wondered…

Were they protecting me?

Or were they protecting themselves?

The next morning, I went straight to Nathan’s office.

I didn’t call.

I didn’t warn him.

I needed to see his reaction.

I needed to know if the man standing in front of me was the same person I thought I knew.

When I entered, Nathan immediately stood.

“Elena.”

His expression changed the moment he saw my face.

He knew.

“You found out.”

I closed the door behind me.

“You were there that night.”

Nathan looked down.

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“I wanted to.”

“But you didn’t.”

His silence was my answer.

I walked closer.

“Why should I believe anything you say now?”

Nathan swallowed.

“Because your mother trusted me.”

I froze.

“Don’t use her name to justify your secrets.”

His face showed pain.

“I’m not.”

“Then explain.”

Nathan took a deep breath.

And for the first time…

The confident man who always seemed to have control looked afraid.

“Twenty years ago, your mother discovered Orion Crest’s real purpose.”

I listened carefully.

“She found financial records showing that Orion Crest wasn’t just an investment company.”

“What was it?”

Nathan looked at me.

“A network.”

“A network of what?”

“Influence.”

He walked toward the window.

“Your grandfather created it to control businesses, politicians, and powerful families.”

My hands tightened.

“But why?”

“Because he believed the world wasn’t controlled by people with money.”

Nathan turned back.

“He believed the world was controlled by people who knew how to use money.”

I felt sick.

Everything my grandfather represented…

Everything my family built its reputation on…

It was all starting to collapse.

“My mother wanted to expose him.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped her.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she disappear?”

Nathan looked away.

“Because someone found out.”

“Who?”

His jaw tightened.

“That’s the part I spent twenty years trying to discover.”

I stared at him.

“You don’t know?”

“I know who gave the order.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

Nathan hesitated.

“Elena…”

“Who?”

His voice became barely a whisper.

“Your father.”

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“No.”

Nathan didn’t answer.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You’re wrong.”

“I wish I was.”

“My father loved my mother.”

“He did.”

“Then why would he do that?”

Nathan looked at me with sadness.

“Because love and fear can make people do terrible things.”

I stepped back.

My mind refused to accept it.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man who spent his life protecting me.

The man who always told me family came first.

Could he really be responsible?

“Show me proof.”

Nathan nodded.

“I knew you would ask.”

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a small black folder.

Old.

Damaged.

Almost forgotten.

“I kept this because I promised your mother I would.”

I took the folder.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

And one recording transcript.

My eyes moved across the page.

Until I saw the date.

The night my mother disappeared.

I read the first line.

Meeting location confirmed. Adrian Vale will arrive at 11:00 p.m.

My breathing stopped.

Adrian.

My father.

The next line was worse.

Objective: Secure the documents before Elena’s mother releases them.

My fingers went numb.

“She was going to expose everything.”

Nathan nodded.

“And your father tried to stop her.”

“No…”

“Elena.”

I looked up.

“Your father didn’t want your mother hurt.”

“Then what happened?”

Nathan’s expression darkened.

“He made a deal.”

A deal.

That word haunted me.

Everyone had made deals.

Everyone had promises.

Everyone had reasons.

But somehow…

I was always the person left behind.

“What deal?”

Nathan looked at the folder.

“He promised Orion Crest that your mother would disappear.”

My heart shattered.

“No.”

“He thought he could control the situation.”

“Where did they take her?”

Nathan looked away.

“That’s the question I never answered.”

“What do you mean?”

“Because when I arrived…”

He stopped.

“When you arrived?”

Nathan nodded.

“I was too late.”

I stared at him.

“You saw her?”

“Yes.”

“Was she alive?”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

“My mother was alive?”

“For a while.”

The words hurt more than silence.

“For a while?”

Nathan nodded slowly.

“She left something behind.”

“What?”

“A message.”

I grabbed his arm.

“What message?”

Nathan reached into the folder again.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not my childhood name.

Not a nickname.

My full name.

Elena Vale.

My heart raced.

“She wrote this for you.”

I stared at the envelope.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

Nathan looked broken.

“Because she told me not to.”

“Why?”

“Because she said if you received it too early…”

He paused.

“You would become the next target.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

My mother’s handwriting.

The handwriting I barely remembered.

But somehow…

I knew it immediately.

The first sentence destroyed me.

My dearest Elena, if you are reading this, then they failed to keep the truth hidden.

My vision blurred.

I continued reading.

There are people you love who will hurt you.

There are people you trust who will betray you.

But remember one thing…

The person who appears to protect you the most may be the person who fears you discovering the truth.

I slowly lowered the letter.

Because I knew exactly who she meant.

My father.

But before I could process anything…

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Marcus.

Elena, you need to come back immediately.

I called him.

“What happened?”

His voice sounded urgent.

“We found another hidden file.”

“What file?”

A pause.

Then he said:

“The original Orion Crest ownership records.”

My heart raced.

“And?”

“Elena…”

“What?”

“The owner listed on the documents…”

A long silence.

Then Marcus whispered:

“It’s not your grandfather.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Your grandfather created it.”

“But he wasn’t the owner.”

My blood ran cold.

“Then who was?”

Marcus answered:

“The person who inherited Orion Crest after his death.”

I gripped the phone.

“Who?”

Another pause.

Then:

“Your father.”

I couldn’t move.

My father.

Again.

Every path.

Every secret.

Every betrayal.

Led back to him.

But before I could speak…

Marcus added one more sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

“Elena…”

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“The transfer documents were signed…”

“When?”

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“The day after your mother disappeared.”

I looked at Nathan.

He was watching me.

He already knew.

And suddenly I understood.

The truth wasn’t just about what happened to my mother.

It was about what happened afterward.

Someone didn’t just hide her disappearance.

Someone inherited everything she was trying to destroy.

May you like

And now…

That person was my father.
