Chapter 16: The Name I Was Never Supposed to Hear

Chapter 16: The Name I Was Never Supposed to Hear

For several minutes…

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

I just stared at Richard Coleman.

Waiting.

Hoping he would take back what he said.

Hoping he would laugh and tell me it was a lie.

A manipulation.

Anything.

But he didn’t.

He stood there silently.

Like a man who had finally released a secret that had been destroying him for twenty-five years.

“Inside my family?”

My voice barely came out.

Richard looked away.

“Elena…”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say something like that and walk away.”

His expression hardened.

“I’m trying to protect you.”

The words almost made me laugh.

“Protect me?”

I pointed toward the documents.

“Everyone says that.”

“My father said that.”

“Adrian Ashford said that.”

“And now you’re saying it too.”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“Because sometimes the truth destroys more than the lie.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked directly at him.

“The truth is the only thing that can save me.”

Richard sat back down.

For the first time since I had known him…

He looked old.

Not like the confident executive who controlled every room.

Not like the trusted advisor everyone respected.

Just an exhausted man carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

“Your mother was closer to the truth than anyone.”

I listened carefully.

“She discovered that money was being moved through several hidden accounts connected to Vale Ashford Research.”

“By who?”

Richard hesitated.

“That’s the part she never got to reveal.”

“Because someone stopped her.”

“Yes.”

My hands tightened.

“Who?”

Richard looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“It’s the truth.”

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You worked with her.”

“Yes.”

“Then why don’t you know?”

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“Because your mother discovered it after I left the room.”

The answer surprised me.

“What?”

“She asked me to leave.”

“Why?”

Richard looked at the necklace on my desk.

“Because she had found something that scared her.”

“What?”

“She said…”

He paused.

“She said the person behind it was someone she loved.”

The room became silent.

Someone she loved.

Those words hurt more than I expected.

Because my mother had loved very few people.

My father.

Me.

Her family.

And someone else.

Someone who betrayed her.

After Richard left, I immediately called my father.

He answered after one ring.

“Elena?”

“Did my mother have another secret?”

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“Dad.”

He breathed slowly.

“What did you find?”

I closed my eyes.

“You already know.”

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Who?”

“Elena…”

“Who?”

His voice was filled with pain.

“I never wanted you to know this.”

“Know what?”

“That your mother suspected someone close to us.”

I gripped the phone.

“Richard said the same thing.”

My father went silent.

“Richard talked to you?”

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“Then he finally decided to tell the truth.”

I froze.

“What does that mean?”

My father’s voice changed.

“Elena, Richard wasn’t the only person your mother trusted.”

“Who else?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me more.

“Dad.”

Finally, he whispered:

“Your uncle.”

The word hit me like a physical blow.

“My uncle?”

“Yes.”

I stared at the wall.

My uncle.

A person I had known my entire life.

A person who attended family dinners.

A person who held me when I was a child.

“You’re saying he was involved?”

“I’m saying your mother believed he knew something.”

“Did he hurt her?”

My father’s voice broke.

“I don’t know.”

And that was the answer I feared most.

That night, I searched through old family records.

Photographs.

Letters.

Business documents.

Anything connected to my mother.

Then I found something.

A photograph hidden behind an old frame.

My mother.

My father.

Me as a baby.

And standing beside us…

My uncle.

But on the back of the photo was a handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

The words were faded.

But still readable.

“Never trust the person who wants to inherit what you built.”

My breathing stopped.

Because my uncle had been one of the people who took control of Vale International after my mother disappeared.

Coincidence?

Maybe.

But there were too many coincidences.

At midnight, Nathan called.

“I found something.”

I was too tired to be surprised anymore.

“What now?”

“My father’s private diary.”

I sat up.

“What?”

“There’s a page mentioning your mother.”

My heart raced.

“What did it say?”

Nathan hesitated.

“I don’t think you’re going to like it.”

“Read it.”

A few seconds passed.

Then Nathan began.

“‘Evelyn knows the truth. She knows who betrayed us. But she refuses to expose him because protecting Elena matters more than revenge.’”

I closed my eyes.

My mother.

She knew.

She knew everything.

“And?”

Nathan continued.

“‘If anything happens to me, Richard must protect Elena. She cannot know the truth until she is strong enough.’”

My throat tightened.

“She planned this.”

“Yes.”

“She knew something would happen.”

“Yes.”

I looked at my mother’s necklace.

“She knew she might not survive.”

Nathan was quiet.

Then he said:

“Elena…”

“What?”

“There’s one more line.”

I waited.

Nathan’s voice became softer.

“‘The person who betrayed us is not someone who hates our family.’”

A chill moved through me.

“Then who?”

Nathan answered:

“Someone who wanted to become our family.”

I didn’t sleep that night.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The hidden agreements.

The rivalry.

The lies.

The disappearance.

The person behind everything wasn’t trying to destroy Vale International.

They were trying to own it.

They didn’t want revenge.

They wanted control.

The next morning, I made one decision.

I called Marcus.

“I need a full investigation.”

“Into who?”

I looked at the family tree hanging in my office.

The names.

The history.

The people I trusted.

“Everyone.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Everyone?”

I nodded.

“No exceptions.”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

This time, nobody spoke.

Only silence.

Then a familiar voice.

A voice I never expected.

My blood turned cold.

“Elena.”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it my entire life.

The person on the other end whispered:

“You’re looking in the wrong direction.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“The person your mother was trying to protect you from.”

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Because for the first time…

I realized something terrifying.

Maybe my mother wasn’t trying to expose the enemy.

Maybe she was trying to protect me from the truth about them.

And maybe…

May you like

The person I was searching for…

Had been watching me my entire life.
