Chapter 15: The Man Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 15: The Man Who Knew Too Much

For three days, I played a dangerous game.

I smiled.

I listened.

I pretended everything was normal.

And Richard Coleman believed it.

That was the most terrifying part.

A man who had spent twenty-five years hiding a secret was not someone who panicked easily.

He was patient.

Careful.

Calculated.

The kind of person who could sit across from you, look you in the eyes, and lie without changing his expression.

Just like he had done with my mother.

Every morning, Richard came into my office with updates.

Every afternoon, he offered advice.

Every evening, he reminded me how much he “cared” about Vale International.

“Your father built this company with sacrifice,” he told me one afternoon.

I looked up from my documents.

“He did.”

Richard smiled.

“And people like us have a responsibility to protect his legacy.”

People like us.

The words stayed in my mind.

Because that was exactly how he had survived.

He made himself part of the family.

Not by blood.

By trust.

I closed the folder in front of me.

“Richard.”

“Yes?”

“How well did you know my mother?”

For a brief second…

Only a brief second…

His expression changed.

A tiny movement.

A slight pause.

But I saw it.

“I knew her professionally.”

“Professionally?”

“Yes.”

I leaned back.

“My father said she trusted you.”

Richard looked away.

“Your mother trusted many people.”

“And did they deserve it?”

Silence.

Then he smiled.

“Elena, your mother was a brilliant woman. But brilliant people sometimes see the best in everyone.”

A strange answer.

Not a denial.

Not a defense.

Almost like a warning.

That night, I met with Marcus and Nathan in a private location outside the city.

I still didn’t fully trust Nathan.

Trust was something he would have to earn.

But right now, he was the only person who understood what I was facing.

Marcus placed several photos on the table.

“These are from the last month before your mother disappeared.”

I picked them up.

My hands froze.

There was my mother.

Walking into Vale International.

Leaving the building.

Meeting someone outside.

I looked closer.

“Who is that?”

Nathan leaned forward.

His face changed.

“My father.”

Adrian Ashford.

My heart tightened.

“They met?”

Nathan nodded.

“Several times.”

I looked at the pictures again.

“If they were working together, why did everyone believe they were enemies?”

Nathan gave a bitter laugh.

“Because someone wanted everyone to believe that.”

Marcus placed another photo on the table.

“This one is different.”

I picked it up.

My mother.

Adrian.

And Richard Coleman.

Together.

My breathing stopped.

“The three of them?”

Marcus nodded.

“This meeting happened two days before your mother disappeared.”

No one spoke.

The truth was becoming clearer.

But somehow…

It was also becoming more complicated.

I returned home that night and opened my mother’s old jewelry box.

The necklace was still there.

But this time, I looked at it differently.

My father said she gave it to him the night before everything changed.

Why?

Why would she give him something so important?

Unless…

She wanted him to find something.

I turned the pendant over.

For the first time, I noticed a tiny mark on the back.

A symbol.

Not a decoration.

A code.

My heart started racing.

I grabbed a magnifying glass from my desk.

Hidden beneath the silver design were three small letters.

V.A.R.

I stared at them.

“What does that mean?”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?”

A woman’s voice replied.

“Elena Vale?”

I froze.

“Yes?”

“You found the necklace.”

My entire body went cold.

“Who is this?”

The woman ignored my question.

“You need to stop looking into your mother’s disappearance.”

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Someone who tried to save her.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?”

“I was there that night.”

My heart stopped.

“You knew my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

The woman’s voice became shaky.

“She discovered the truth.”

“About Richard?”

Silence.

That silence was enough.

“You know.”

“I know many things.”

“Who are you?”

Before she answered, another sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

Someone speaking in the background.

The woman suddenly became frightened.

“I have to go.”

“Wait!”

But before I could ask anything else…

The call ended.

The next morning, I searched every record connected to the symbol.

V.A.R.

Nothing.

No company.

No organization.

No official documents.

Nothing.

Until Nathan sent me a message.

A single file.

The title:

“Vale Ashford Research.”

I opened it.

My hands went numb.

Twenty-five years ago, before the families became enemies, Vale International and Ashford Holdings created a secret division.

A research project.

A private investment group.

A company hidden from the public.

Vale Ashford Research.

But according to the records…

The project was destroyed.

Closed forever.

Everyone involved disappeared.

Including my mother.

I called Nathan immediately.

“You knew about this?”

“No.”

“Then how did you find it?”

“My father’s files.”

I looked at the screen.

“Why was it hidden?”

Nathan’s voice became serious.

“Because the project discovered something.”

“What?”

A long pause.

“Elena…”

“Tell me.”

“They discovered financial corruption involving some of the most powerful people in the country.”

I felt a chill.

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“But Richard was just an employee.”

Nathan corrected me.

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“Richard wasn’t working for Vale.”

I froze.

“Then who was he working for?”

Nathan answered quietly.

“The people who funded Vale Ashford Research.”

That afternoon, I called Richard into my office.

He entered with the same calm expression.

The same polite smile.

“Everything okay, Elena?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

I pushed a document across the desk.

“I found something interesting.”

Richard looked down.

For the first time…

His smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But it happened.

The document showed the original records of Vale Ashford Research.

A project he thought had vanished forever.

His fingers tightened slightly.

“You shouldn’t be looking into this.”

The words came out before he could stop them.

I noticed.

And so did he.

A dangerous silence filled the room.

I slowly leaned forward.

“Interesting.”

Richard looked at me.

“What?”

“You didn’t ask what it was.”

His face went still.

“You already knew.”

For the first time…

Richard Coleman looked afraid.

Not nervous.

Not uncomfortable.

Afraid.

I stood.

“Twenty-five years ago, my mother discovered something.”

Richard said nothing.

“She trusted you.”

Still nothing.

“She believed you were helping her.”

His eyes shifted.

“And then she disappeared.”

“Elena…”

“No.”

My voice became colder.

“You spent twenty-five years pretending to protect this company.”

I stepped closer.

“But you weren’t protecting Vale.”

I looked directly at him.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Richard slowly stood.

And then he said something I never expected.

Something that changed everything.

“Your mother didn’t disappear because of what she found.”

I stared at him.

“Then why?”

His eyes met mine.

“Because of what she was about to reveal.”

My heart raced.

“What was it?”

Richard whispered:

“The person who ordered your mother’s silence…”

A pause.

“Was someone inside your own family.”

The room went silent.

My entire world stopped.

Because suddenly…

The enemy was no longer hiding outside the walls.

The enemy had my last name.

May you like

And the truth I had spent my entire life searching for…

Was closer than I ever imagined.
