Chapter 17: The Person Behind the Family Name

Chapter 17: The Person Behind the Family Name
The voice stayed in my mind all night.
Not because I didn’t recognize it.
Because I did.
That was the part that terrified me.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it during family gatherings.
During celebrations.

During moments when everyone smiled and pretended everything was perfect.
A voice that belonged to someone who had always been close.
Too close.
By sunrise, I was already at Vale International.
The building looked exactly the same.
The same glass walls.
The same polished floors.
The same employees walking through the lobby.
But everything felt different.
Because I finally understood something.
A company could be attacked from outside.
But families…
Families were destroyed from within.
I walked into my office and found my father waiting.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn’t slept either.
“You called everyone?”
I nodded.
“Marcus started the investigation.”
My father’s expression changed.
“Elena, be careful.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because once you start digging into old secrets, you don’t get to choose what you find.”
I placed my mother’s necklace on the desk.
“She didn’t get to choose either.”
My father looked at it.
And for the first time, I saw tears forming in his eyes.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I thought keeping you away from this world would protect you.”
I looked at him.
“But this world was already around me.”
He didn’t answer.
Because we both knew it was true.
An hour later, Marcus arrived with the first report.
His face told me everything.
“You found something.”
He placed a folder in front of me.
“Yes.”
I opened it.
The first page showed a list of names.
Executives.
Partners.
Family members.
People connected to Vale International and Ashford Holdings twenty-five years ago.
But one name appeared more than any other.
Alexander Vale.
My uncle.
I stared at the page.
“No.”
Marcus watched my reaction.
“You know him?”
“He’s my uncle.”
“I know.”
I looked up.
“You investigated him?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Marcus hesitated.
“That’s the problem.”
I hated those words.
“What problem?”
“Everything points toward him.”
Alexander Vale was my father’s younger brother.
The charming one.
The generous one.
The man everyone loved.
When I was little, he brought me gifts.
He told me stories.
He called me his “little princess.”
At every family event, he stood beside my father.
Always smiling.
Always supportive.
The perfect uncle.
But now…
I wondered if that smile had been real.
Or just another mask.
“What did you find?” I asked.
Marcus opened another file.
“After your mother disappeared, Alexander gained control of several assets connected to Vale Ashford Research.”
My hands went cold.
“How?”
“Legal transfers.”
“Signed by who?”
Marcus looked at me.
“Your mother.”
I froze.
“That’s impossible.”
“The documents are real.”
I grabbed the papers.
My mother’s signature.
Her handwriting.
Her approval.
But something felt wrong.
“She would never give him control.”
Marcus nodded.
“Unless she had a reason.”
That afternoon, I went through every document connected to my mother.
Every signature.
Every agreement.
Every decision.
Then I found something strange.
A pattern.
Every document involving Alexander had one thing missing.
A witness signature.
Except one.
The final agreement.
The one signed three days before my mother disappeared.
I stared at the page.
The witness name was hidden.
Covered by a black mark.
“Who removed this?”
Marcus looked closer.
“This wasn’t removed.”
“What do you mean?”
“It was intentionally covered.”
“By who?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Then my father walked in.
The moment he saw the document…
He stopped.
“You found it.”
I looked at him.
“You know this agreement?”
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your mother made me promise.”
I felt my anger rise.
“Another promise.”
“Elena…”
“No.”
I held up the document.
“She signed something with Alexander before she disappeared.”
My father closed his eyes.
“She knew Alexander was dangerous.”
The words hit me.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“But you still let him stay close to us?”
My father’s voice broke.
“Because your mother believed there was still good in him.”
I laughed bitterly.
“And was she wrong?”
My father didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than anything.
That evening, I met Alexander.
I didn’t tell him what I knew.
I couldn’t.
Not yet.
I needed him comfortable.
I needed him to believe he was safe.
He arrived at my private office wearing the same warm smile I remembered from childhood.
“Elena.”
He hugged me.
For a second…
I almost believed everything was normal.
Almost.
“My beautiful niece.”
I stepped back.
“Uncle Alexander.”
He smiled.
“I heard you’re investigating old company records.”
My stomach tightened.
Already?
“I’m trying to understand what happened.”
He nodded sadly.
“Your mother’s disappearance was a tragedy.”
“You remember that time well?”
His expression changed slightly.
“Of course.”
“Where were you that night?”
A small pause.
Then he smiled again.
“Why would you ask me that?”
“Because everyone remembers where they were.”
He looked at me carefully.
“I was at home.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
Interesting.
Too quick.
Too perfect.
Before he left, Alexander stopped at the door.
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“Be careful who you trust.”
The words were familiar.
Too familiar.
Because everyone who was hiding something seemed to say the same thing.
He looked at me.
“Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who hurt you the most.”
After he left…
I immediately checked the security cameras.
Marcus entered a few minutes later.
“What happened?”
I looked at the screen.
“Something strange.”
“What?”
“He warned me about trusting people.”
Marcus frowned.
“And?”
I looked at the recording.
“At the exact same time my mother’s necklace started vibrating.”
Marcus looked confused.
“Your necklace?”
I picked it up.
For the first time, I noticed something.
The pendant had opened slightly.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a tiny piece of paper.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
Only one sentence was written.
In my mother’s handwriting.
“Elena, if you are reading this, I failed to protect you.”
My eyes filled with tears.
I continued reading.
“Do not trust Alexander.”
I stopped breathing.
The next line was even worse.
“But do not trust your father either.”
The room went silent.
My entire life.
Everything I believed.
Everything I knew.
Started falling apart.
Then my phone rang.
Nathan.
I answered.
“Elena.”
His voice was urgent.
“We found something about Alexander.”
I closed my eyes.
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“Alexander wasn’t the person who betrayed your mother.”
I opened my eyes.
“Then who was?”
Nathan’s voice lowered.
“The person who helped him.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
Nathan whispered:
“Your father’s closest friend.”
I looked at the message from my mother again.
Do not trust your father either.
And suddenly I understood.
The truth wasn’t about one person.
It was about a group.
A secret alliance.
People who had spent twenty-five years protecting each other.
And I had spent my entire life surrounded by them.
That night, I made a decision.
I wasn’t going to search for the enemy anymore.
I was going to make them reveal themselves.
Because whoever they were…
They believed they had already won.
They believed I was still the little girl they could protect with lies.
They were wrong.
I was Elena Vale.
And I was done being protected from the truth.

Now…
I was coming for it.
