Chapter 9: The Reckoning

Monday morning, Courtroom 4B was packed. It wasn’t just a family court judge this time; Julian was facing a district judge for the criminal charges, with Judge Thorne observing the proceedings regarding the protective order.

Julian was brought in through the side door. He was wearing an orange county jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to a chain around his waist. He looked completely broken—unshaven, exhausted, and humiliated.

His high-priced lawyer, Mr. Vance, stood beside him, looking distinctly uncomfortable.

“Your Honor,” Vance began, addressing Judge Harrison. “My client is a respected member of the community. He has no prior criminal record. We request bail be set at a reasonable amount so he may prepare his defense.”

Sarah Jenkins stood up, straightening her blazer. “Your Honor, the State and Mrs. Hayes strongly oppose bail. Mr. Hayes is a severe flight risk. He has demonstrated a profound ability to hide assets internationally, and we have evidence he planned to flee the jurisdiction.”

“That is absurd!” Julian shouted, rattling his chains. “I didn’t plan to flee anywhere!”

“Mr. Hayes, control yourself or I will have you gagged,” Judge Harrison warned. “Ms. Jenkins, present your evidence.”

Sarah walked to the center of the room with a tablet. “Your Honor, we have a recorded conversation from Thursday evening between the defendant and his former associate, Chloe Mercer. In this audio, the defendant explicitly admits to hiding two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in a Cayman Islands account to defraud the family court, and he threatens to frame Ms. Mercer if she reports him.”

Julian froze. He turned slowly to look at the gallery. He had expected to see Chloe there, waiting for him, supporting him. The seats were empty. Only Laura sat there, her expression unreadable.

Chloe wore a wire. The realization hit Julian like a physical blow. The only person he thought he had total control over had driven the final nail into his coffin.

Sarah played the audio. Julian’s arrogant, venomous voice filled the courtroom, detailing his crimes and threatening Chloe. Vance, Julian's lawyer, put his head in his hands. It was the sound of a case becoming completely unwinnable.

“Furthermore,” Sarah added when the audio ended, “we have copies of a ledger kept by the defendant, detailing millions of dollars in embezzled funds from his clients. The FBI is currently executing a search warrant on his office. If granted bail, Mr. Hayes has the means and the motive to disappear.”

Judge Harrison didn't even need to look at his notes. “Bail is denied. The defendant is remanded to the custody of the county jail pending trial.”

“No!” Julian screamed, pure panic taking over. He turned to his lawyer. “Do something, Vance! You’re fired! You’re all fired! I’ll represent myself!”

“Bailiff, remove him,” the judge ordered.

As the deputies dragged Julian backward toward the holding cells, he locked eyes with Laura. The smug, controlling tyrant was gone. In his eyes, Laura saw nothing but terror.

Laura didn’t smile. She didn’t gloat. She simply turned away, walking out of the courtroom with her head held high.
