Chapter 2: The Reversal

Judge Thorne adjusted her glasses, her pen flying across the legal pad in front of her. The tension in the room was so thick it could be cut with a knife.

"Based on the evidence presented, including the sworn petition filed by Mr. Hayes which I now have probable cause to believe is entirely fraudulent, I am issuing my ruling," the judge announced.

Julian’s lawyer wiped sweat from his forehead. Laura held her breath, closing her eyes and praying to a God she hadn't spoken to in months.

"First, the petitioner’s request for temporary sole custody of the minor child, Maya Hayes, is unequivocally denied," Judge Thorne stated. "I am granting temporary sole legal and physical custody to the respondent, Laura Hayes."

Laura let out a shattered sob, burying her face in her hands.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, her voice devoid of any warmth, "I am ordering Mr. Hayes to vacate the marital residence in McLean immediately. You are not to return. Laura Hayes is granted exclusive use and possession of the home."

"Your Honor, my client's belongings—" Vance started.

"He can arrange for a police escort to retrieve his clothing on a Tuesday afternoon," Thorne snapped back. "Now, regarding the financial aspect. Mr. Hayes, you admitted on video to draining marital funds to deliberately leave your wife destitute. I am issuing an emergency injunction. You have forty-eight hours to return every single cent taken from the joint accounts, plus an additional ten thousand dollars to cover Mrs. Hayes's immediate legal fees."

"I don't have the liquid cash right now!" Julian protested, panic finally breaching his arrogant exterior. "I moved it into investments!"

"Then I suggest you un-invest it, Mr. Hayes," the judge replied coldly. "Because if those funds are not in that account by 5:00 PM on Friday, I will issue a warrant for your arrest for contempt of court. In addition, I am granting a temporary restraining order. You are to stay one hundred yards away from Laura and Maya Hayes. All communication will be done through a court-approved parenting app, restricted solely to emergencies."

Judge Thorne looked at Laura, her eyes softening. "Mrs. Hayes, I strongly suggest you take those legal fees and hire a ruthless attorney. You are going to need one."

"Thank you, Your Honor," Laura whispered, her voice shaking with profound gratitude.

"Court is adjourned."

As the bailiff guided Maya back to Laura's arms, the little girl buried her face in her mother's neck. Laura squeezed her tight, inhaling the scent of her strawberry shampoo.

"You did so good, baby. Mommy loves you so much," Laura cried, kissing the top of her head.

"Laura."

The voice was venomous. Laura turned to see Julian standing in the aisle, completely disregarding the judge's new orders. His eyes were dark, filled with a sociopathic rage she had only ever seen behind closed doors. Chloe was hovering behind him, looking terrified.

"You think you won?" Julian hissed, stepping closer. "This is just a temporary hearing. I will tie you up in litigation for the next ten years. I will bankrupt you. You’re nothing without me."

Before Laura could respond, a hand landed firmly on Julian’s shoulder. It was the court bailiff.

"Step back, sir. The judge just issued a protective order. You need to leave the courthouse, or you’ll be leaving in handcuffs."

Julian sneered, straightening his expensive suit jacket. He shot one last venomous look at Laura and Maya before turning on his heel and storming out, his mother and mistress trailing behind him like scolded dogs.

Laura stood tall, holding her daughter. For the first time in five years, she wasn't afraid of the monster in the dark. She was ready for war.
