Chapter 5: The Weakest Link

The café in Alexandria was quiet, tucked away from the main road. Laura sat in a corner booth, a cup of chamomile tea warming her hands. Sarah Jenkins sat next to her, tapping away on a sleek iPad.

At precisely 2:00 PM, the bell above the door chimed. Chloe Mercer walked in.

She looked nothing like the polished, arrogant woman from the courtroom yesterday. Her hair was pulled into a messy bun, dark circles bruised the skin under her eyes, and she wore an oversized sweater that seemed to swallow her whole. She looked nervously over her shoulder before sliding into the booth across from Laura.

"Thank you for seeing me," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling. She couldn't meet Laura's eyes.

"Save the pleasantries, Ms. Mercer," Sarah said coldly. "I'm Laura's attorney. Anything you say here is unprotected. We are here because you reached out."

Chloe swallowed hard. "Julian... Julian lost his mind after the hearing yesterday. He threw his phone against the wall. He started screaming at me, blaming me for not noticing Maya had the old phone." She looked at Laura, tears welling in her eyes. "I’m so sorry, Laura. I really am."

"I don't care about your apologies, Chloe," Laura said, her voice eerily calm. She had spent too many nights crying over this woman to feel an ounce of pity now. "Tell me why you wanted to meet."

Chloe took a shaky breath. "He asked me to do something. Something illegal."

Sarah stopped tapping on her iPad. "Go on."

"He told me I need to go to the McLean house today while you're at work, bypass the alarm, and get into his office. He said there's a black leather book in his bottom drawer. He told me if I don't bring it to him, we're both going to jail." Chloe began to quietly sob. "I don't want to go to jail. I just wanted... I thought he loved me."

Laura felt a grim satisfaction. Julian had pushed too hard.

"Chloe," Sarah said smoothly, pulling a printed document from her briefcase. "We already have the book."

Chloe’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes darted between Laura and the lawyer.

"We also know," Sarah continued, sliding a piece of paper across the table, "that three days ago, Julian wired two hundred and fifty thousand dollars of marital funds into a Cayman Islands account registered under your social security number."

Chloe stared at the paper as if it were a live snake. "No... no, I didn't open that! He asked for my social a month ago to put me on his health insurance! I swear!"

"It doesn't matter what you swear," Sarah said sharply. "On paper, you are an accomplice to wire fraud, money laundering, and hiding marital assets. Julian set you up as the fall guy, Chloe. If the feds look into this, he’s going to point the finger straight at you. He’ll say you stole the money."

Chloe covered her face with her hands, crying openly now. "What do I do? Please, help me. I'll do anything."

Laura leaned forward, resting her arms on the table. The scared, submissive wife Julian had created was dead. In her place was a mother protecting her child's future.

"You're going to go back to Julian," Laura said quietly. "You're going to tell him the locks were changed and you couldn't get the book. And then, you are going to wear a wire for my lawyer’s private investigator."

Chloe looked up, terrified. "A wire?"

"You get him to admit he opened that account in your name," Sarah chimed in. "You get him to admit he's hiding the money. If you do that, I will hand the recordings over to the feds with a recommendation for your immunity. If you don't..." Sarah smiled thinly. "I will personally make sure you share a prison cell with him."

Chloe looked at Laura, searching for mercy. She found absolutely none.

"Okay," Chloe whispered, her hands shaking. "I'll do it."
