Chapter 19: The Mastermind Revealed

The FBI command center at the Washington Field Office was a hive of frantic activity. Laura sat at a metal table in the debriefing room, holding a cup of terrible black coffee, watching Reynolds pin photographs to a corkboard.
"It makes sickening sense," Reynolds said, drawing a red line between a photo of Julian and a photo of Eleanor Hayes. "Eleanor’s late husband wasn't just a real estate mogul. He was laundering money for Eastern European oligarchs in the nineties. When he died, Eleanor took over the operation. But she needed a clean face to move the digital assets."
"Julian," Laura said, disgust lacing her voice. "She groomed her own son to be her personal money launderer. That's why he started his financial consulting firm. It was a front for her empire."
Miller leaned against the doorframe. "Julian was terrified of her. That’s why he was so controlling of you, Laura. He was projecting. He had absolutely no power in his own life, so he made sure he had absolute power over yours."
"Eleanor realized Julian was losing control when you filed for custody," Reynolds continued. "When you found the ledger, she panicked. She offered you the five hundred thousand dollars to buy your silence, but you threatened to go to the IRS. You spooked her."
"So she fled to Europe," Laura said.
"Exactly," Reynolds tapped the board. "But she couldn't leave the fifteen million behind. That money belonged to very dangerous people in Moscow. If Eleanor didn't get it back to them, they would kill her. So, she hired the mercenaries to terrorize you into handing over the Apex account."
Laura looked down at her coffee. The woman who had criticized her parenting, who had sneered at her clothes, who had funded Julian’s brutal legal campaign—she wasn't just an arrogant socialite. She was an international criminal who had ordered a hit on her own daughter-in-law.
"Where is she now?" Laura asked, her eyes hardening.
"We tracked her private jet," Reynolds said, a predatory smile forming on her lips. "She didn't stay in Europe. She thought the mercenaries would secure the funds today, so she flew back to North America to finalize the wire transfers in person. Her plane touched down in Montreal two hours ago. The RCMP and Interpol are waiting for her at the private hangar."
Just then, Reynolds’s desk phone rang. She picked it up, listening intently for a few seconds. A wide, satisfied grin spread across her face.
"Understood. We'll start the extradition paperwork immediately." Reynolds hung up the phone and looked at Laura. "They got her. Eleanor Hayes is in custody."
Laura let out a long, shuddering breath. It was over. The suffocating weight she had carried for five years finally lifted off her chest, dissolving into nothingness.
"What happens to the money?" Laura asked.
"The fifteen million in Apex is seized by the federal government," Reynolds said. "But Julian’s legitimate assets—the house, the legal settlement from the divorce—that's all yours, free and clear. And because your intel directly led to the dismantling of a massive international laundering ring, you are eligible for a percentage of the seized assets under the whistleblower program."

Miller chuckled. "Looks like you're going to be a very wealthy woman, Laura."
Laura didn't care about the money. She just wanted to go home.
