Chapter 18: The Ambush

The response was instantaneous and deafening.
"Federal Agents! Nobody move!"
The man reading the newspaper on the sofa threw it aside, drawing a Glock 19 and leveling it at the two men beside Laura. The female security guard by the vault ripped off her jacket, revealing an FBI tactical vest, her weapon drawn. From the back offices, six more heavily armed agents flooded the lobby.
The bank erupted into chaos. Real customers screamed and dropped to the marble floor.
The man next to Laura cursed violently in Russian. His hand darted inside his tailored jacket, reaching for a concealed weapon.
"Do it and I'll drop you right here!" Agent Reynolds roared, storming through the front doors with her weapon raised.
The broader man on Laura’s right realized they were entirely surrounded. He slowly raised his hands, stepping away from the counter. But the first man—the one with the dead eyes—panicked. In a desperate, final bid for leverage, he lunged forward, grabbing Laura by the lapel of her white suit and yanking her backward to use her as a human shield.
Before he could pull his weapon, a massive force collided with him from the side.
Miller had entered the bank right behind Reynolds. He tackled the Russian operative with the force of a freight train, sending them both crashing through a glass partition separating the teller line from the waiting area.
Glass shattered like an explosion. Laura stumbled back against the marble counter, unharmed.
Miller pinned the man to the floor, driving a heavy knee into his spine and wrenching his arm behind his back until a sickening pop echoed in the lobby. The man screamed, finally dropping the handgun he had managed to pull from his holster.
"Secure him!" Reynolds shouted. Agents swarmed the two men, slapping heavy steel handcuffs on their wrists and dragging them to their feet.
Laura stood breathing heavily, brushing shards of tempered glass off her suit. Miller stood up, dusting off his jacket, and looked at her.
"You okay, kid?" he asked, panting slightly.
"I'm fine," Laura said, her voice shaking just a little as the adrenaline began to crash. "Did we get them?"
Reynolds walked over, holstering her weapon. "We got the ground crew. But these guys are just enforcers. Mercenaries. We need to know who the real architect is. Who gave Julian the fifteen million in the first place."
As the agents dragged the bleeding operative past Laura, the man spat on the marble floor and laughed.
"You think this is over?" the Russian sneered, glaring at Laura. "You think Julian was working for us? He was a puppet. The money belongs to the Matriarch. You just stole from the devil herself."
Laura froze. The blood drained from her face.
The Matriarch.
She looked at Reynolds, her eyes wide with a horrifying realization. "It wasn't a cartel. It wasn't the mafia."
May you like
"Who is it?" Reynolds demanded.
"It's Eleanor," Laura whispered, the pieces finally snapping together in her mind. "Julian wasn't hiding money from his mother’s trust. His mother is the syndicate."
