Chapter 8 - The Key Around Her Wrist.

Elena read the message three times before she understood the threat hidden inside it.

The real M-17 key is around your daughter's wrist.

Nora's hospital identification band had already been replaced.

The new band Tessa applied was ordinary.

Elena knew because she had watched the nurse remove it from sealed packaging.

That meant the message was not referring to the replacement.

It referred to the original.

The band Luca had sealed in an evidence bag.

Elena called him.

He answered on the first ring.

"Elena?"

"Where are the old ID bands?"

A pause.

"With me."

"Look at them."

"I'm looking."

"Is there anything inside the plastic?"

She heard movement.

Adrian spoke in the background.

"What is it?"

Luca did not answer him.

Then Luca said quietly.

"There's a metallic strip."

Elena closed her eyes.

"The message says the real M-17 key is around Nora's wrist."

Silence.

"Who sent it?"

"Unknown number."

"Send me screenshots."

"Already doing it."

Rosa stood in the doorway.

"What happened?"

Elena lifted one hand.

"Someone hid something in Nora's hospital band."

Rosa's expression changed instantly.

"Then whoever changed it wanted you to lose it."

Exactly.

Elena felt her mind clear.

The switched bands had not been intended only to alter Nora's sample identity.

Someone had also been trying to remove a physical object attached to Nora.

"Luca, don't open it there."

"Why?"

"Because whoever sent the message can see you."

A long pause.

Luca looked around wherever he was.

"Good point."

Adrian's voice came through.

"We need to leave."

Luca spoke.

"Elena, stay with Rosa."

"I wasn't planning to take a walk."

"Lock the back door."

"It is locked."

"Check it anyway."

The call ended.

Rosa checked every window without being asked.

Elena hated how practiced she looked.

Twenty minutes later, Luca and Adrian arrived carrying the cedar box.

Adrian had a split lip.

Elena stood too quickly.

"What happened?"

"I'm fine."

Luca shut the door.

"He's not."

Adrian glared.

"You should see the other guy."

Luca looked at Elena.

"There was no other guy."

Elena blinked.

Adrian sighed.

"I walked into a shelf."

Rosa snorted.

Luca placed the cedar box on the table.

"He panicked when the alarm activated."

Adrian touched his lip.

"The shelf moved."

"It was a stationary shelf."

For one second, Elena almost laughed.

The absurdity helped.

Then Luca placed the evidence bag beside the box.

Inside were Nora's altered hospital bands.

The narrow white plastic looked harmless.

Luca wore gloves.

He cut one band carefully along the outside edge.

A thin metallic insert slid out.

It was shorter than a matchstick.

Elena leaned closer.

"What is it?"

Luca examined it.

"Probably an NFC tag."

Adrian frowned.

"In a newborn band?"

"Not standard."

Elena looked at the cedar box.

"Try it."

Luca held the strip near the brass lock.

Nothing happened.

Adrian glanced at Elena.

"Maybe it's not for the box."

Elena remembered the tag her father had taped beneath his desk drawer.

M-17.

The brass key she found had opened nothing in the house.

Maybe because it was never meant to.

She looked at the cedar box.

"Open it."

Adrian frowned.

"We already did."

"Open it again."

Luca lifted the lid.

Inside were Thomas's old papers, a fountain pen, two photographs, and a folded handkerchief.

Elena had gone through the box dozens of times.

She touched the bottom.

"Take everything out."

They did.

The box looked empty.

Elena ran her fingers along the interior.

Thomas had built it himself.

She remembered him sanding the wood at the kitchen table.

She remembered asking why the bottom seemed so thick.

He had told her cedar warped.

At twelve, she believed him.

At twenty-five, she pressed the corners.

One section moved.

Adrian stared.

Elena pushed harder.

A false bottom lifted.

Beneath it was a shallow recess containing a black card.

Luca exhaled slowly.

The card had no writing except one silver mark.

M-17.

Elena looked at him.

"You never knew?"

"No."

She took the card.

A small circular indentation appeared near one edge.

Exactly the size of the metallic strip.

Luca inserted the strip.

A tiny green light blinked.

Adrian stepped closer.

"What does it do?"

The card displayed a six-digit number.

Then the light went dark.

Elena memorized it.

"Storage code."

Luca nodded.

"Probably."

"Where?"

He looked at the brass key from the box.

"Thomas believed the original sample was inside the hospital."

Adrian frowned.

"Why would he hide a key at home?"

"Because the code and physical key were separated."

Elena picked up the brass key.

One side carried a nearly invisible engraving.

B14.

Adrian's face changed.

"What?"

Elena asked.

He looked at Luca.

"B level."

Luca nodded.

"Basement."

Adrian swallowed.

"Research archive B has numbered cold-storage cages."

Elena stared at him.

"You've been there?"

"Once."

"When?"

"With my father."

"Why?"

"I was eighteen."

Elena's patience thinned.

"What did you see?"

"Boxes."

"What kind of boxes?"

"Old sample storage."

Luca took out his phone.

"Is B14 still active?"

"I don't know."

"Who would?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Dr. Malcom Voss."

The name meant nothing to Elena.

Luca's expression said otherwise.

"He's still alive?"

"He's chief scientific officer."

Luca leaned back.

"Thomas believed Voss destroyed the original files."

Adrian shook his head.

"My father trusts him."

"Exactly."

Elena picked up Nora.

The baby stirred against her chest.

"No one goes to the hospital until we know what we're walking into."

Luca nodded.

"Agreed."

Adrian looked surprised.

Elena glared at him.

"Stop being surprised when he listens to me."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

Rosa placed coffee on the table.

Luca ignored his.

Elena looked at the M-17 card.

"Why would someone text me the clue?"

"Maybe they want us to find it."

Adrian said.

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Or they want to know where it leads."

Elena thought of Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

"Could it be Evelyn?"

"Possibly."

"Call her."

"The number she used is dead."

Elena looked at Luca.

"Then find her."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"You say that like he has a button."

Luca opened his laptop.

"I have three."

Elena stared.

He almost smiled.

It vanished quickly.

The search took twenty minutes.

Luca checked travel records, professional licensing updates, property databases, and a private network Elena did not ask about.

He finally found a pharmacy claim filed under Evelyn's middle name in a small town ninety miles away.

"She's hiding."

Elena said.

"Poorly."

Luca answered.

"Maybe intentionally."

Adrian looked at the screen.

"You think she wanted to be found."

"I think she wanted the right person to find her."

Elena looked at Nora.

"Then we go."

Luca immediately shook his head.

"No."

Elena stared at him.

He corrected himself.

"You stay with Nora."

"Better."

Adrian leaned against the table.

"I'll go."

Luca looked at him.

"No."

Adrian laughed.

"Apparently no is back."

"You have a recognizable car, a recognizable face, and a father with access to your location history."

"I turned location services off."

Luca looked at him.

"That's adorable."

Elena covered a smile.

Adrian looked offended.

Rosa muttered something in Italian.

Luca began packing his laptop.

Elena stopped him.

"Before you leave, I want the truth about my father."

Luca went still.

"All of it."

"Not all of it is mine to tell."

Elena's voice hardened.

"Then decide quickly whose permission matters more than mine."

Rosa looked at Luca with approval.

He sat back down.

"Thomas believed Victor Mercer had ordered the destruction of evidence tied to a paternity fraud case twenty-five years ago."

Elena listened.

"Your mother discovered that samples had been substituted."

"By Victor?"

"We never proved who physically did it."

"What happened to the case?"

"It disappeared."

"Because of M-17?"

"Because M-17 could prove the substitution."

Elena felt the story deepen beneath her feet.

"Whose paternity case?"

Luca looked at Adrian.

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

Luca's voice became quiet.

"It involved the Mercer family."

Adrian's face drained.

Elena stared at Luca.

"Whose?"

Luca answered.

"Adrian's."

Nobody moved.

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

Luca continued.

"Your father believed the first M-17 sample could prove Victor Mercer was not Adrian's biological father."

Adrian pushed away from the table.

"That's a lie."

"I said Thomas believed it."

"My mother would know."

Luca looked at him.

"Your mother is the one who asked the lab to change the sample."

Adrian stared.

Elena felt suddenly cruel for watching, but she could not look away.

"Why would Margaret do that?"

Adrian whispered.

Luca's answer came slowly.

"Because Victor's marriage contract gave him control of her inheritance only if he produced a biological heir."

Adrian sank into the chair.

Elena remembered Margaret's silence when asked about the switched newborn bands.

History was not repeating itself by accident.

It was being repeated by the same people.

Luca looked at the M-17 card.

"Twenty-five years ago, someone changed a baby's identity to protect Victor Mercer's control of the company."

His gaze moved to Nora.

"Last night, someone tried to do it again."

Adrian covered his face.

Elena felt no satisfaction.

Only dread.

Because suddenly the last DNA envelope was not just about Nora.

It might contain the truth about Adrian too.

And if Victor Mercer had built his empire on a false bloodline, then M-17 was worth far more than money.

May you like

It was worth destroying every person who could prove it.
