Chapter 6 - The Man in the Elevator.

Elena had known Victor Mercer for five years, and she had never heard him ask twice for anything.

That was how powerful men like Victor moved through the world.

They did not repeat themselves.

Other people adjusted.

Elena did not.

She held Nora closer.

"No."

Victor stopped three feet from the wheelchair.

His gaze moved to Luca.

"I told you never to come near my family again."

Luca's expression remained still.

"Thomas's family isn't yours."

Victor's jaw tightened.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Dad, what is going on?"

Victor did not look at him.

"Take your wife back to her room."

Elena laughed.

The sound surprised everyone, including her.

"Your son just left me for another woman."

Victor finally turned toward Adrian.

His disappointment was almost theatrical.

"We will discuss your stupidity later."

Adrian flinched.

Elena watched the exchange carefully.

Victor was angry that Adrian had left.

Not because Elena had been hurt.

Because Adrian had disturbed a plan.

"You wanted him to stay married to me."

Victor looked at her.

"I wanted my son to behave like an adult."

"That's not what I said."

"Elena, you have been through a physically and emotionally exhausting night."

There it was again.

The language of concern used as a leash.

She leaned forward.

"If you say I'm confused, I will start screaming loudly enough for every patient on this floor to hear the word M-17."

Victor went silent.

Luca looked almost impressed.

Adrian stared at his father.

"What is M-17?"

Victor's eyes hardened.

"Not here."

"So you do know."

"Of course I know."

Adrian stepped closer.

"You told me it was an old research designation."

"It is."

"You told me it had nothing to do with Elena."

Victor looked toward the ceiling camera.

"Lower your voice."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"Now you care about privacy?"

Victor's control slipped.

"Enough."

The single word had probably ended arguments in boardrooms for decades.

It did not end this one.

Elena looked at him.

"Did you change Nora's identification bands?"

Victor's eyes flickered.

It was tiny.

Luca saw it too.

"What are you talking about?"

Tessa held up the evidence bag.

"These were on the baby."

Victor looked at the nurse.

"And you are?"

"Someone who verified the replacement."

Victor's gaze moved back to Luca.

"This is your work."

Luca shook his head.

"You're getting predictable."

Victor stepped closer.

Adrian moved between him and Elena.

It was the first protective thing he had done since Nora's birth.

Elena hated that a small part of her noticed.

Victor stared at his son.

"Move."

"No."

Victor's face changed.

Adrian swallowed but stayed.

"Dad, did you order the blood comparison?"

"Move."

"Did you?"

Victor lowered his voice.

"You have no idea what you're risking."

"Then tell me."

"Not in a hallway."

Luca pressed the elevator button.

"We agree on one thing."

The doors opened again.

He looked at Elena.

"Come on."

Victor reached for the wheelchair handle.

Luca caught his wrist.

The movement was fast but controlled.

No one raised a voice.

No one needed to.

Victor looked down at Luca's hand.

"Take your hand off me."

Luca released him.

"Don't touch her chair."

Victor's eyes filled with old hatred.

"You were a thug when Thomas found you, and you're a thug now."

Elena looked at Luca.

He did not react.

Victor smiled without warmth.

"He never told you that part, did he?"

Luca stepped into the elevator beside Elena.

"Tell her whatever helps you sleep."

Victor looked at Elena.

"Ask him why he was with your father the night Thomas died."

The doors began to close.

Elena's hand shot out and stopped them.

Luca looked at her.

She looked at Victor.

"What did you say?"

Victor's voice was calm again.

"Ask your protector why police questioned him about your father's accident."

Elena slowly turned toward Luca.

His face revealed nothing.

"Is that true?"

"Yes."

The answer was immediate.

"Why?"

"Because I was supposed to meet him."

"Did you?"

"No."

Victor stepped closer.

"He was the last known person Thomas called."

Luca's jaw tightened.

Elena felt the fragile trust she had built over the night crack.

"You never mentioned that."

"You never asked."

She stared at him.

"That is a terrible answer."

"I know."

Victor smiled.

"Come with me, Elena."

She looked at him.

"I can put you in a private suite, restore Nurse Walker, correct every record, and make sure you and Nora are protected."

"From whom?"

Victor's gaze moved toward Luca.

Elena did not miss it.

"From people who have used your grief to pursue old grudges."

Luca said nothing.

That silence unsettled her more than a denial would have.

Adrian looked at his father.

"Did you know Sloane was coming here tonight?"

Victor's eyes shifted.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Dad."

"Your personal life is not my concern."

"That's a lie."

Victor's mouth tightened.

Adrian looked at Elena.

"My father pays Sloane's consulting firm."

Elena stared.

Sloane worked in public relations.

Adrian had told Elena she handled communications for one of his companies.

Victor answered calmly.

"We employ dozens of firms."

"She met with you yesterday."

Adrian said.

"I saw the calendar invite."

Elena felt sick.

Victor looked at his son with contempt.

"You are choosing a remarkable time to become observant."

The words crushed whatever remained of Adrian's loyalty.

He stepped into the elevator.

"I'm going with Elena."

Victor's face hardened.

"No."

Adrian pressed the close button.

"You taught me that whoever controls the chart controls the story."

The doors narrowed.

"I'm going to find out what story you wrote for me."

Victor moved forward, but Luca stood between him and the opening.

The doors closed.

The elevator descended.

Elena looked at Luca.

"Why were police questioning you after Dad died?"

Luca watched the floor numbers.

"Because Thomas called me eleven minutes before his car went off the bridge."

"What did he say?"

"He told me someone had found the backup."

"The M-17 backup?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"He told me to go to you."

"Where were you?"

"Across town."

"Why didn't you?"

"I did."

Elena frowned.

"I never saw you."

"I watched your house for three days."

The admission should have sounded disturbing.

Instead it sounded lonely.

"I was nineteen."

"I know."

"Why didn't you knock?"

"Because Victor's security people were watching too."

Adrian looked at him.

"You knew?"

"I recognized two of them."

Elena stared at Luca.

"What happened after three days?"

"Thomas's attorney contacted me."

"What did he say?"

"Your father had left instructions that I disappear unless the M-17 system activated again."

Elena looked down at Nora.

"And you obeyed for eight years."

"Yes."

"Even when I married Adrian."

Luca's eyes moved to Adrian.

"I objected."

Adrian laughed once.

"That's one word for it."

Elena looked between them.

"Did you know Victor arranged the museum meeting?"

Luca hesitated.

"No."

"Would you have stopped it?"

"Yes."

Adrian's face twisted.

"You don't get to decide her life."

Luca looked at him.

"Neither did your father."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Both of you stop speaking about me like I'm a piece of property."

Silence followed.

The elevator opened into a service level beneath the maternity wing.

Tessa led them through a corridor to a small private recovery room used for overnight staff observation.

No name appeared on the door.

No digital patient board glowed outside.

For the first time all night, Elena felt hidden.

That feeling lasted nine minutes.

Then her phone rang from an unknown number.

She answered carefully.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice whispered.

"Elena Carter?"

Nobody called her Carter anymore.

"Who is this?"

"My name is Evelyn Shaw."

Luca stood instantly.

Elena looked at him.

The missing research ethicist.

The second successor protector.

Elena put the phone on speaker.

Luca moved closer.

"Evelyn?"

The woman inhaled sharply.

"Luca?"

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Are you safe?"

"No."

The room became still.

Elena spoke.

"Dr. Shaw, what is M-17?"

A pause followed.

Then Evelyn said something none of them expected.

"M-17 is not just your mother's genetic line."

Elena tightened her grip on the phone.

"What else is it?"

"It's the proof that Victor Mercer stole the company."

Adrian went pale.

Evelyn continued.

"And if Nora's DNA is confirmed, Elena doesn't inherit a small trust."

Another pause.

May you like

"She becomes the controlling owner of Mercer Medical."
