Chapter 12 - The Locker Beneath the Glass.

Central Station was crowded enough to make Elena feel invisible and exposed at the same time.

Commuters moved beneath the enormous glass roof with coffee cups, rolling luggage, backpacks, and the ordinary urgency of people whose lives had not been rearranged overnight.

Elena wore Luca's baseball cap and one of Rosa's long black coats over her hospital clothes.

Every step reminded her that she had given birth less than twenty-four hours earlier.

Every thought reminded her that Nora was somewhere inside the building with a woman Elena had never met.

Luca walked half a step behind her.

Evelyn had demanded Elena come alone.

Elena had ignored that.

"She sees you, she'll leave."

Elena whispered.

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because she needs the token."

Elena's hand closed around the metallic strip in her pocket.

"Then why take Nora?"

"Leverage."

The word made Elena furious.

"Don't call my daughter leverage."

Luca looked at her.

"You're right."

They reached the main concourse.

A message appeared on Elena's phone.

LOCKER HALL C.

COME WITHOUT MORETTI.

Elena showed Luca.

He nodded toward a coffee shop.

"I'll stay here."

"No heroics."

"You're the one who came to a train station after giving birth."

She gave him a hard look.

He lifted both hands.

"Fair."

Elena walked alone toward Hall C.

The locker corridor was quieter than the main station.

Rows of brushed-metal doors lined both walls.

At the far end, Evelyn Shaw sat on a bench beside a baby carrier.

Nora was asleep inside it.

Elena stopped breathing.

Then she moved faster than her body wanted.

Evelyn stood.

She was in her late fifties, with short gray hair and a bruise darkening one side of her face.

Her left arm was held close to her ribs.

"Stay there."

Elena's voice shook.

Evelyn did.

"Give me my daughter."

"Of course."

No argument.

No condition.

Evelyn stepped away from the carrier.

Elena lifted Nora immediately.

She checked the baby's face, hands, breathing, blanket, and identification band.

Nora stirred, then settled against Elena's chest.

Relief came so violently Elena nearly sat on the floor.

"You had no right."

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"No."

"Rosa trusted you because you said Luca sent you."

"Yes."

"You lied."

"Yes."

"You terrified me."

"I know."

Elena looked at her.

"Then why should I listen to another word?"

Evelyn sat slowly on the bench.

"Because Victor Mercer will be here in less than ten minutes."

Elena's anger sharpened.

"Did you call him?"

"No."

"He followed you?"

"He has followed me for twenty-five years."

Elena held Nora tighter.

"Start talking."

Evelyn looked toward the lockers.

"Your mother and I worked together."

"I know that much."

"Miriam discovered that Victor and Margaret Mercer had requested an unauthorized substitution in an infant paternity case."

"Adrian's."

"Yes."

Elena studied her.

"Was Victor his father?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with something like pity.

"No."

The answer felt heavier because Adrian was not there to hear it.

"Who was?"

"I don't know."

"Margaret does."

"Probably."

Elena swallowed.

"Why did they switch the sample?"

"Victor's control over a family investment trust depended on producing a biological heir."

"Margaret's family money."

"Yes."

"Then Adrian's entire identity was used in a financial fraud."

Evelyn nodded.

"Miriam refused to participate."

"What did you do?"

Evelyn looked down.

"I was weak."

The answer surprised Elena.

"I helped her preserve the original sample, but later Victor found out."

"And paid you."

"Threatened me first."

"Then paid you."

"Yes."

Elena's voice turned cold.

"My father trusted you."

"He shouldn't have."

"Did you betray him?"

Evelyn's eyes closed.

"Yes."

The single word hurt Elena more than a complicated excuse would have.

"How?"

"I told Victor Thomas had found the old M-17 index."

Elena's pulse pounded.

"Before my father died?"

"Two days before."

Elena stared at her.

"You helped kill him."

"No."

"You gave Victor the information."

"I did not know Victor would send anyone after Thomas."

"That is the sentence cowards use after someone else pays the price."

Evelyn accepted it.

"You're right."

Elena glanced toward the concourse.

"Why are you helping now?"

"Because Thomas knew I betrayed him."

Elena frowned.

"He knew?"

"Yes."

"And still named you a protector?"

Evelyn's voice broke slightly.

"That was his punishment."

Elena did not understand.

Evelyn gave a sad smile.

"He knew living with the obligation would be harder than being exposed."

That sounded like Thomas.

Not cruel.

Exact.

"What did he tell you?"

"That if M-17 activated again, I had one chance to do the right thing."

Evelyn pointed toward locker 417.

"That is the chance."

Elena looked at the locker.

"What's inside?"

"Everything Thomas couldn't safely keep."

"The original sample?"

"Copies of the chain-of-custody records."

"What else?"

"Your mother's partnership agreement."

Elena's heartbeat changed.

"Partnership with Victor?"

"With the company that became Mercer Medical."

Evelyn nodded.

"Miriam owned forty-nine percent of the diagnostic platform and thirty-one percent of the original holding company."

"Then how does Nora make me controlling owner?"

"Because Victor pledged voting rights from his shares to secure a research loan from Miriam's family trust."

Elena frowned.

"He borrowed from my mother's family?"

"Yes."

"The pledge terminated when the debt was repaid?"

"It was never repaid."

"Why?"

"Because Victor declared Miriam's trust dissolved after her death."

Elena understood.

"He pretended the creditor no longer existed."

"Exactly."

Evelyn looked at Nora.

"But the trust document says the voting rights transfer to Miriam's direct line upon confirmation of the first living descendant born after Elena reaches adulthood."

Elena stared.

"Nora."

"Nora."

"Why such a strange trigger?"

"Miriam added it after you were born."

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"She said she wanted you to become your own person before money found you."

Elena's eyes burned.

That sounded like a mother Elena barely remembered.

"How do I open it?"

Evelyn stood.

"Palm first."

The locker had a small glass panel.

Elena placed her hand against it.

A red light blinked.

Evelyn pointed to a narrow slot.

"The token."

Elena inserted the metallic strip from Nora's first hospital band.

A green light appeared.

The locker clicked.

Elena hesitated.

"Why was the token in Nora's band?"

Evelyn looked ashamed.

"I put it there."

Elena spun.

"You were in the hospital?"

"No."

"Then how?"

"I paid a lab technician to place it during registration."

Elena's anger returned.

"And someone switched the band to take it."

"Victor found out the token existed."

"How?"

"I told the wrong person."

"Again?"

Evelyn flinched.

"Not Victor."

"Who?"

Before she could answer, Luca appeared at the end of the corridor.

"Elena."

His voice was urgent.

"Open it now."

Elena pulled the locker door.

Inside was a black document case.

She removed it.

Footsteps echoed behind Luca.

Grant Keller entered with two station security officers.

Victor Mercer followed.

He looked at Elena, Nora, Evelyn, and the open locker.

For the first time since Elena had known him, Victor looked old.

"Give me the case."

Elena held it against her body.

"No."

Victor stopped.

"Elena, whatever Evelyn told you is designed to manipulate you."

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"That's rich."

Victor ignored her.

Luca stepped between him and Elena.

The station officers looked uncertain.

Victor held up a legal document.

"That case contains stolen corporate property."

Evelyn whispered.

"He got an injunction."

Luca looked at the paper.

"Temporary preservation order."

Victor corrected.

"Which means no one opens the case."

Elena stared at him.

"You were fast."

"I have good lawyers."

"You also have bad secrets."

Victor's eyes moved to Nora.

"That child deserves stability."

Elena felt fury rise.

"Do not talk about my daughter."

"I am trying to protect her inheritance."

"From me?"

"From people who want to turn her into litigation."

Luca almost laughed.

Elena opened the black case.

Victor's voice cracked.

"Don't."

Everyone froze.

It was the first time Elena had heard fear in him.

Inside were several folders, an old audio recorder, a notarized partnership agreement, and three sealed laboratory envelopes.

Each envelope carried a date.

One was twenty-five years old.

One was eight years old.

One was dated that morning.

Elena picked up the newest envelope.

NORA MERCER - PATERNITY AND MATERNAL LINE CONFIRMATION.

Victor took one step forward.

The station officers blocked him.

Elena looked at the second envelope.

ADRIAN MERCER - RETAINED PATERNITY REFERENCE.

Adrian's secret.

Then she looked at the oldest.

VICTOR MERCER / INFANT A.M. - ORIGINAL COMPARISON.

Victor's face lost all color.

Elena understood why Evelyn had taken Nora.

Why Thomas had died.

Why Victor had arranged a marriage.

Why Adrian had been told to deny paternity.

One family had spent twenty-five years building power around who was allowed to be called someone's child.

The final cruelty was almost elegant.

Victor looked at Elena.

"Those results will destroy people who never hurt you."

Elena thought of Margaret.

She thought of Adrian.

Then she thought of Thomas's crushed car and Miriam's erased name.

"Truth didn't destroy them."

She said.

"You did."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"If you open those envelopes, there is no going back."

Elena looked at Nora.

"That's the first thing you've said that makes me want to open them."

Before she could break the seal, Adrian's voice came from behind the officers.

"Elena, wait."

She turned.

He stood at the entrance to Hall C, breathing hard.

Margaret Mercer stood beside him.

Adrian looked at the envelope carrying his name.

Then he looked at his mother.

Margaret began to cry.

"Please."

It was not Victor speaking.

It was not Evelyn.

It was Margaret.

May you like

"Please don't open Adrian's."
