Chapter 11 - The Nurse Who Remembered.

June Walker had spent eleven years memorizing the sounds of St. Gabriel Medical Center.

She knew which elevator doors stuck in humid weather.

She knew which infant warmer beeped when its sensor cable loosened.

She knew the pharmacy tube system made a hollow knock two seconds before a canister arrived.

She also knew that people who wanted to hide something in a hospital rarely hid it in a dramatic place.

They hid it inside routine.

That was why June returned to work after being suspended.

Not through the front entrance.

Through the loading dock.

She wore jeans, a gray sweatshirt, and the old maintenance badge her late husband had once used when he serviced imaging equipment.

The badge should have expired six years earlier.

It still opened the basement utility corridor.

That fact told June more about hospital security than any policy manual.

She called Elena from a stairwell.

Elena answered in a whisper.

"June?"

"Where are you?"

"In a parking garage with Luca."

June closed her eyes.

"That sounds exactly as bad as I expected."

"We're being followed."

"Then listen quickly."

Elena's voice sharpened.

"I'm listening."

"I remembered something about the B-level archive."

"What?"

"Newborn specimen storage used to share a wall with pathology records before the renovation."

Luca's voice came faintly through the phone.

"Ask her what year."

June answered.

"Two thousand one."

Elena repeated it.

June continued down the stairs.

"After the renovation, everyone thought the old specimen cages were removed."

"Were they?"

"I don't think so."

"Why?"

"Because there is still a refrigeration service line running behind the records wall."

Luca came onto the call.

"Can you reach B14?"

"I can reach the corridor."

"Don't."

June almost laughed.

"You sound like Elena."

"That's becoming a compliment."

June reached the basement landing.

A security camera pointed toward the door.

She pulled her hood lower.

"Too late."

Elena's voice filled with concern.

"June, get out."

"I got fired for protecting your baby."

"You were suspended."

"Same emotional experience."

Despite everything, Elena laughed.

June smiled.

Then she heard footsteps.

She moved into a supply alcove.

A man in a dark suit entered the corridor.

Grant Keller.

June recognized him from Mercer Medical events.

He walked past without looking toward her.

He carried a small insulated specimen case.

June's breath stopped.

"Elena."

"What?"

"Keller is here."

Luca's voice became immediate.

"Do not follow him."

June waited until Keller turned the corner.

Then she followed him.

"June."

"I heard you."

"Then stop."

"Can't."

Keller used a card at an unmarked door.

The door opened.

June waited until it closed.

On the wall beside it was a tiny printed label.

B-14 AUXILIARY.

Her pulse jumped.

"Found it."

Elena whispered.

"June, please."

June photographed the label.

Then she noticed something on the floor.

A torn strip of silver security tape.

M-17 was printed across it.

She photographed that too.

The unmarked door opened.

June ducked behind a linen cart.

Keller emerged without the specimen case.

He walked away.

June waited thirty seconds.

Then she approached the door.

Her maintenance badge failed.

She tried again.

Red light.

June looked at the hinges.

Old construction.

Mechanical override.

She smiled.

Her late husband had taught her something else.

Old hospital doors often had terrible secrets and excellent maintenance access.

She used a flat tool from the utility cabinet.

The latch released.

Cold air hit her face.

Inside were rows of metal cages.

Most were empty.

B14 was not.

A refrigeration unit hummed behind a locked mesh panel.

June approached it.

On the shelf sat three specimen boxes.

One was labeled M-17A.

One was M-17B.

The third had no code.

It had a name.

MIRIAM CARTER.

June felt gooseflesh rise along her arms.

"Elena."

No answer.

She looked at her phone.

No signal.

The cold room blocked reception.

June photographed everything anyway.

Then she heard the outer door close.

She turned.

Grant Keller stood between her and the exit.

He looked tired rather than angry.

"June."

She held the phone behind her back.

"You know my name."

"I know everyone who accessed the Mercer chart last night."

"That's flattering."

"Give me the phone."

"No."

Keller sighed.

"You're making this harder."

"For who?"

"For yourself."

June looked at the specimen box.

"Did you switch that baby's ID bands?"

Keller's face revealed nothing.

"Give me the phone."

"Did you attack Dr. Shaw?"

A flicker.

There.

June stepped backward.

Keller moved forward.

June raised her voice.

"I sent the photographs."

He stopped.

It was a bluff.

Probably.

Keller studied her.

"To whom?"

"Everyone."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the one you're getting."

He reached inside his coat.

June's fear spiked.

He removed a phone, not a weapon.

He dialed.

"Mr. Mercer."

June stared at him.

"I found Nurse Walker."

A pause.

"Yes."

Another pause.

Keller looked at June.

"No, she hasn't touched the samples."

June almost corrected him.

Then decided against it.

Keller listened.

His expression changed slightly.

"Understood."

He ended the call.

June swallowed.

"What did he say?"

"That you can leave."

She stared.

"Why?"

"Because apparently there are more important problems."

He stepped aside.

June did not move.

"What's the problem?"

Keller gave a tired smile.

"Ask Luca Moretti."

June walked toward the exit.

At the door, she stopped.

"Did you hurt Evelyn Shaw?"

Keller looked at the cold-storage shelves.

"I was told she stole corporate property."

"That's not an answer."

"No."

He met her eyes.

"It isn't."

June left.

The moment she reached signal, her phone exploded with notifications.

Elena had called six times.

June called back.

Elena answered immediately.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Don't ever do that again."

June smiled despite herself.

"I found B14."

Silence.

Then Luca.

"What was inside?"

June described the boxes.

When she said Miriam Carter, Elena stopped breathing for a second.

"Did you open it?"

"No."

"Good."

Luca sounded relieved.

"I photographed it."

"Send everything."

June sent the images.

Elena looked at them while Luca drove.

The black SUV had stopped following after they changed levels and exited through a service ramp.

Margaret's warning about the station remained unexplained.

June said.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"Keller let me go because Victor told him to."

Elena frowned.

"Why would Victor do that?"

"He said there were more important problems."

Luca's voice became wary.

"What problems?"

"He told me to ask you."

The line went quiet.

June heard road noise.

Then Elena asked.

"Luca?"

He did not answer immediately.

"Luca."

"My private server went offline six minutes ago."

"What was on it?"

"Copies of Thomas's files."

Elena's stomach dropped.

"Could Victor erase them?"

"No."

"Then who?"

"Only three people had access."

"Who?"

"Me."

Luca paused.

"Thomas."

Elena waited.

"And?"

"Evelyn."

Elena stared ahead through the windshield.

Evelyn had just been found injured.

Supposedly.

A cold suspicion entered the car.

"Where is Evelyn right now?"

Luca made a call.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Elena looked at him.

"You left her at the clinic?"

"With a deputy."

"Call the clinic."

He did.

The receptionist checked.

Dr. Evelyn Shaw had left fifteen minutes earlier.

The deputy assigned to her room had been called away by a false report of a disturbance outside.

Elena felt anger rise.

"She used you."

"Maybe."

"You said she was attacked."

"She was."

"Or she wanted it to look that way."

Luca's jaw tightened.

Elena looked at the locker information on his screen.

"Who told you the train station locker could only be opened by me?"

"Evelyn."

"And who said Victor knew about it?"

"Evelyn."

"Then Margaret wasn't warning us about Victor's trap."

Luca looked at her.

"No."

"She was warning us about Evelyn's."

Elena called Adrian.

He answered quickly.

"My mother says Evelyn Shaw worked with Thomas at first."

"At first?"

"Then Victor paid her."

Elena closed her eyes.

"How long?"

"Years."

"Why didn't Margaret say that before?"

"Because she thought Evelyn was dead."

Elena looked at Luca.

"Turn around."

He did.

"Where are we going?"

"Back to Rosa."

"Why?"

"Because the person who knows about our server, our locker, and the M-17 token knows where Nora is."

Luca accelerated.

Elena's phone rang.

Rosa.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then she heard a baby crying in the background.

"Nora?"

A woman's voice came through.

Calm.

Educated.

Older.

"Hello, Elena."

Elena's blood froze.

"Evelyn."

"Come to the station alone."

Elena gripped the phone.

"Where is my daughter?"

"Safe."

"If you touch her—"

"I have spent twenty-five years protecting that child before she existed."

Evelyn's voice became colder.

"Do not confuse me with Victor Mercer."

Elena heard Rosa breathing somewhere nearby.

"Let Rosa go."

"I will."

"Now."

A pause.

Then Rosa's voice.

"Elena, don't come alone."

The call ended.

Luca turned the car sharply.

Elena stared at him.

"Nora is with Evelyn."

Luca's face changed into something Elena had not seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Then the train station isn't a trap."

Elena looked at the M-17 token in her hand.

"No."

Her voice became steady.

May you like

"It's an exchange."
