Chapter 10 - The Mother They Called Unstable.

By noon, Elena Mercer had become a dangerous woman on local television.
The first report appeared on a financial news site.
MERCER HEIR'S WIFE REMOVED FROM HOSPITAL AFTER POSTPARTUM INCIDENT.
The headline was false in almost every word.
Elena had not been removed.
There had been no incident.
No doctor had diagnosed her with anything.
Yet within twenty minutes, three other sites repeated the story.
A photograph from Elena's wedding appeared beside the articles.
She was smiling under white flowers while Adrian held her hand.
The image made the lie look respectable.
Rosa turned off the television.
Elena turned it back on.
"You don't need to watch."
Rosa said.
"I need to know what they're saying."
A commentator described Elena as emotionally distressed.
Another said sources close to the Mercer family were concerned for the newborn's welfare.
A third mentioned an unidentified male with a criminal background seen near the maternity unit.
The screen showed an old photograph of Luca being led from a courthouse in handcuffs.
Elena stared.
The caption read LUCA MORETTI, FORMER SECURITY CONTRACTOR.
Rosa's face became hard.
"That case was dismissed."
Elena looked at her.
"What case?"
"Assault."
"Did he do it?"
Rosa folded her arms.
"He hit a man who had a knife."
"That is not a no."
"It is the truth."
The article did not include the knife.
It included Luca's tattoos.
It included his arrest photograph.
It included a sentence stating he had been questioned after Thomas Carter's fatal accident.
Elena understood the strategy immediately.
Victor did not need to prove Luca was dangerous.
He only needed strangers to believe it was possible.
Then he needed them to believe Elena was too unstable to recognize danger.
Adrian paced across the living room.
"This is my father's PR team."
"How can you tell?"
"The wording."
He pointed at the screen.
"'Sources close to the family are deeply concerned' is their favorite phrase."
Elena looked at him.
"You sound proud."
"I'm not."
"Then call them."
"I already did."
"And?"
"They won't take my calls."
Rosa laughed.
"Your father put you outside the castle."
Adrian stared at the floor.
Elena's phone began vibrating continuously.
Friends.
Reporters.
Unknown numbers.
A woman from Adrian's family texted that postpartum emotions could make women say things they regretted.
Elena blocked her.
Her college roommate Maya called and left a voicemail.
"I don't care what the news says."
Another message followed.
"Tell me where you are and what you need."
Elena almost cried.
She did not call back yet.
Trust had become expensive.
The front doorbell rang.
Rosa looked through the peephole.
"Police."
Adrian went still.
Elena's heart raced.
Two officers stood outside with a woman in a navy blazer.
The woman introduced herself as a county child welfare investigator.
Her name was Karen Holt.
Elena opened the door but kept the chain latched.
Karen held up identification.
"Mrs. Mercer, we received an emergency referral concerning the safety of your newborn."
Elena looked at Adrian.
His face filled with rage.
Karen continued.
"We need to visually confirm the child is safe."
Elena did not move.
"Who made the referral?"
"I can't disclose that."
"Was it Victor Mercer?"
"I can't disclose that."
"Was the referral based on hospital records?"
Karen hesitated.
That was enough.
Elena closed her eyes for one second.
Then she opened the door.
"You can come in."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Elena."
"If I refuse, they write that I refused."
Karen looked at her with surprise.
Elena met her gaze.
"I'm learning."
The investigator entered alone.
The officers remained outside.
Elena showed her Nora's discharge instructions, medication schedule, feeding log, and the pediatric nurse's written confirmation that the infant had been stable when they left the maternity unit.
Karen examined Nora.
The baby slept through most of it.
"Where is the father?"
Karen asked.
Adrian raised his hand slightly.
"Here."
Karen looked between him and Elena.
"The referral stated the father had been excluded from contact."
Adrian laughed without humor.
"I excluded myself last night."
Karen waited.
He swallowed.
"I left the hospital."
"Why?"
Adrian glanced at Elena.
"Because I was having an affair."
The admission filled the room.
Karen wrote something.
Adrian continued.
"My father is using that mistake to create a custody narrative against my wife."
Elena looked at him.
He did not avoid her eyes.
Karen stopped writing.
"That's a serious allegation."
"I know."
"Do you have evidence?"
Elena placed the settlement agreement on the table.
Karen read the custody clause.
Her expression changed.
"Where did you get this?"
"Victor's consultant delivered it less than an hour ago."
"Who?"
"Sloane Bennett."
Adrian spoke.
"The woman I was having the affair with."
Karen looked at him.
"You understand how this sounds."
"Unfortunately."
Rosa brought coffee and placed it in front of Karen.
"No sugar."
Karen blinked.
"I didn't ask."
"You looked like no sugar."
For the first time that day, Elena almost smiled.
The interview lasted forty minutes.
Karen did not close the case.
She also did not remove Nora.
Before leaving, she gave Elena her direct number.
"Any attempt to move the baby should come through proper court process."
Elena nodded.
Karen paused.
"Mrs. Mercer, I don't make decisions based on news articles."
It was the closest thing to reassurance Elena had received from an institution all morning.
"Thank you."
After the door closed, Adrian sank into a chair.
Elena looked at him.
"That was the first useful thing you've done."
"I know."
"Don't expect a medal."
"I don't."
His humility irritated her less than his apologies.
Luca called at one fifteen.
Evelyn Shaw was in a rural emergency clinic under an alias.
She had a concussion and two cracked ribs.
"Who attacked her?"
Elena asked.
"She only saw one face."
"Did she know him?"
"Yes."
Luca paused.
"His name is Grant Keller."
Adrian swore.
"Who is that?"
Elena asked.
"Head of my father's executive protection team."
Luca continued.
"Evelyn says Keller took her phone and searched her room."
"Did he find the locker information?"
"No."
"Then how does Victor know?"
"She believes someone else does."
Elena looked at the cedar box.
"Who?"
"Evelyn wouldn't say over the phone."
"Why?"
"Because she thinks the line is compromised."
Elena glanced at the window.
The yellow curtains suddenly felt thin.
"When do we go to the station?"
"Not yet."
Elena's patience vanished.
"Luca."
"The station has cameras on every entrance."
"So?"
"So Victor will have access to some of them."
"Then wear a hat."
Adrian covered a smile.
Luca ignored him.
"There's another problem."
"What?"
"The locker requires a palm scan."
Elena looked at her hand.
"My mother's biometric archive recognizes me?"
"Not exactly."
"Then what?"
"Miriam designed the lock registration so her adult daughter could activate it through a maternal-line match."
Elena frowned.
"That sounds impossible."
"It uses a coded biometric token, not your DNA."
"Where is the token?"
Luca was silent.
Elena looked at Nora.
"No."
"Elena."
"No."
"The original hospital band likely contains it."
She stared at the opened white band on the table.
The metallic strip.
The thing someone had tried to remove.
"That strip activates the locker."
"Probably."
"Then why do you need my palm?"
"Two-factor access."
Adrian shook his head.
"Thomas was paranoid."
Luca's voice hardened.
"Thomas was right."
Silence followed.
Elena looked at Nora sleeping in Rosa's arms.
"I'll go."
Adrian objected.
"You just had a baby."
Elena turned on him.
"If you say that one more time, I will demonstrate exactly how much energy I have left."
He closed his mouth.
Rosa nodded approvingly.
Luca said.
"We do it quietly."
"Fine."
"No Adrian."
Adrian started to speak.
Luca raised one hand.
"Victor tracks his vehicles, accounts, and probably his face through private security feeds."
Adrian looked at Elena.
"He isn't wrong."
Elena hated how normal those words had become.
She packed a small bag.
Rosa agreed to keep Nora.
Leaving the baby again felt like tearing something physical out of Elena's chest.
She stood over the bassinet for a full minute.
"I'll be back."
Nora slept.
Elena kissed her forehead.
Outside, Luca waited in an old gray sedan that looked deliberately forgettable.
Elena sat in the passenger seat.
He handed her a baseball cap.
She stared at it.
"Seriously?"
"Very advanced security technology."
She put it on.
As they pulled away, Elena saw a black SUV parked half a block behind them.
"Luca."
"I see it."
"Is that Victor?"
"No."
"How do you know?"
"Victor's people use newer vehicles."
The SUV started moving.
Elena looked at him.
"Who else is following us?"
Luca checked the mirror.
"That's what we're about to find out."
The SUV stayed with them for six blocks.
Then it accelerated.
Luca turned sharply into a parking garage.
The SUV followed.
Elena gripped the door handle.
"What are you doing?"
"Confirming."
"Confirming what?"
"That they want us, not Rosa's house."
He drove down one level, then another.
The SUV appeared behind them.
Luca's jaw tightened.
"Seat belt tight."
"It is."
He accelerated toward the exit.
The SUV closed distance.
Elena's phone buzzed.
A message from Adrian appeared.
DO NOT GO TO THE STATION.
She stared.
A second message followed.
MY MOTHER JUST CALLED.
Then the third.
