Chapter 7 - The First MoveNathan Mercer did not sleep that night.

He told himself he was not afraid.

He repeated the same words over and over.

Everything was under control.

Claire was in the hospital.

Her father was angry.

The police had not arrived.

The family had stayed united.

The video was secured.

Nothing had changed.

At least, that was what Nathan wanted to believe.

But the anonymous phone call kept returning to his mind.

“You made a mistake.”

Six words.

Nothing more.

No explanation.

No name.

No threat.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because Nathan understood something.

People who wanted attention made threats.

People who wanted control stayed silent.

He walked through his enormous living room.

The same room where Claire had stood only days before.

The same room where she had entered carrying Christmas gifts.

The same room where his family had surrounded her.

The memory did not make him feel guilty.

It made him angry.

Because for the first time, someone had challenged him.

Someone had made him feel vulnerable.

His phone rang.

Nathan immediately looked at the screen.

Richard Cole.

He answered.

“What happened?”

Richard’s voice remained calm.

“You received a call.”

Nathan stopped walking.

“How do you know?”

“Because I know Victor.”

Nathan became silent.

“You think it was him?”

Richard paused.

“It was him.”

Nathan looked toward the window.

“He wouldn’t do anything.”

Richard laughed quietly.

“That is where you are wrong.”

Nathan frowned.

“You said he was predictable.”

“He is.”

“Then why are you worried?”

Richard’s voice became colder.

“Because you misunderstand what makes Victor dangerous.”

Nathan waited.

“He does not lose control.”

“He calculates.”

Nathan tried to sound confident.

“So what?”

“So you gave him something to calculate.”

Silence.

Richard continued.

“You hurt the one person he spent his entire life protecting.”

Nathan’s face tightened.

“He cannot touch us.”

Richard did not answer immediately.

Then:

“Are you sure about that?”

The question bothered Nathan.

Because Richard was not afraid of many people.

But he respected Victor.

And that meant something.

“What should we do?”

Richard looked around his office.

“Nothing.”

Nathan was confused.

“Nothing?”

“Exactly.”

“We continue as normal.”

“Why?”

“Because people like Victor have one weakness.”

Nathan waited.

“They believe they are doing the right thing.”

Richard smiled.

“And that makes them predictable.”

But Richard was wrong.

Because Victor Hale was not moving like an angry father.

He was moving like a commander.

And commanders did not announce their strategies.

They executed them.

At 5:30 in the morning, Victor entered the training facility.

The building was empty.

Except for one person.

Daniel Cross.

“You look like you haven’t slept.”

Victor placed a folder on the table.

“I haven’t.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside were the seventeen names.

The Mercer family.

Friends.

Associates.

Everyone who was present.

Everyone who participated.

Daniel looked through the pages.

“You are building a case.”

Victor nodded.

“Evidence.”

“Witnesses.”

“Timeline.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“I expected something different.”

Victor looked at him.

“What?”

“I expected anger.”

Victor looked down.

“I have anger.”

“Lots of it.”

“But anger does not protect my daughter.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That is the difference.”

“What difference?”

“Between you and them.”

Victor said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“They hurt people because they enjoy power.”

“You are trying to stop them because you understand responsibility.”

Victor looked at the folder.

“They thought nobody would challenge them.”

Daniel closed the file.

“They were wrong.”

A message appeared on Victor’s phone.

Unknown number.

One image.

Victor opened it.

His expression changed slightly.

Daniel noticed.

“What is it?”

Victor turned the screen.

The image showed Richard Cole entering a private meeting.

With Nathan Mercer.

But the date was impossible.

The meeting happened three days after Claire’s attack.

Daniel frowned.

“Richard said he left town.”

“He lied.”

Victor stared at the photo.

The question was no longer whether Richard was involved.

The question was how deep he was.

Then another message arrived.

This time, a video.

Victor opened it.

It showed a security camera recording.

A parking garage.

Richard.

Nathan.

And someone else.

Someone Victor recognized immediately.

Daniel looked at his face.

“Who is that?”

Victor did not answer.

Because the third person was someone from his own world.

Someone connected to the military.

Someone who should never have been involved.

Finally, Victor spoke.

“Colonel James Walker.”

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Your former commander?”

Victor nodded.

The man who taught him discipline.

The man who taught him strategy.

The man who had shaped his entire career.

And now he was standing beside the people who destroyed Claire.

Daniel looked concerned.

“Victor.”

“Yes?”

“This is bigger than Nathan’s family.”

Victor already knew.

The Mercer family was not the enemy.

They were soldiers on someone else’s battlefield.

Someone had been moving pieces.

Someone had been planning.

And someone had underestimated the wrong person.

That afternoon, Victor visited Claire.

She was sitting near the window.

The hospital room was quiet.

Snow covered the trees outside.

For a moment, she looked peaceful.

“Dad?”

Victor smiled slightly.

“Hey.”

She looked at his face.

“You found something.”

It was not a question.

Victor sat down.

“Yes.”

“Is it bad?”

Victor considered his answer.

“It is bigger than we thought.”

Claire looked afraid.

“Is Nathan still dangerous?”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

“But now we know why.”

She looked confused.

“Why?”

Victor reached for her hand.

“Because someone taught him.”

Claire became silent.

“Who?”

Victor looked away.

“Someone I trusted.”

The room became quiet.

Then Claire whispered:

“Richard?”

Victor looked back at her.

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew something felt wrong.”

“I knew it.”

Victor squeezed her hand.

“This was not your fault.”

She looked down.

“I should have seen it.”

“No.”

“I should have protected myself.”

“No.”

Victor’s voice became firm.

“You trusted people.”

“That is not a weakness.”

Claire looked at him.

“Then what is?”

Victor looked toward the window.

“Believing cruel people are harmless.”

A long silence followed.

Then Claire asked:

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“What happens now?”

Victor looked at his daughter.

At the person who had survived the worst moment of her life.

And he answered honestly.

“Now we find the truth.”

That night, Nathan Mercer received another message.

Not a call.

Not a warning.

A document.

He opened it.

His face immediately changed.

Because the document was not from the police.

It was not from a lawyer.

It was not from the government.

It was from Victor Hale.

The first page contained one sentence.

"Everything you did has been recorded."

Nathan’s hands began shaking.

Because he understood something terrifying.

Victor was not coming after him.

Not yet.

Victor was giving him time.

Time to realize.

Time to fear.

Time to understand what was waiting.

Nathan closed the document.

Then another page appeared.

A list.

Names.

Dates.

Evidence.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every person involved.

Nathan whispered:

“No…”

Because for the first time, the truth became impossible to escape.

Victor Hale had not started a war.

He had started an investigation.

May you like

And investigations ended one way.

With the truth exposed.
