Chapter 6 - The Man Who Knew Too MuchThe morning after Victor discovered Richard Cole’s name inside the investigation, the world looked exactly the same.

Cars still moved through the streets.
People still walked into coffee shops.
Families still opened Christmas presents left behind from the night before.
But for Victor Hale, everything had changed.
Because betrayal had a different kind of pain.
An enemy could hurt you.
A stranger could attack you.
But someone you trusted could destroy something deeper.
They could make you question every memory you shared with them.
Every conversation.
Every smile.
Every moment you thought was real.
Victor sat inside his office, staring at the old photograph on his desk.
It was taken eight years earlier.
Victor.
Richard.
Claire.
All standing together at a charity event.
Everyone smiling.
Everyone believing they were surrounded by people they could trust.
Victor picked up the photograph.
Then he turned it face down.
The past was no longer useful.
Only the truth mattered now.
His phone vibrated.
Daniel.
Victor answered immediately.
“Tell me you found something.”
Daniel did not waste time.
“I found more than I expected.”
Victor leaned forward.
“What did you find?”
“Richard Cole has been watching your family for years.”
The words landed heavily.
“How?”
“Through Nathan.”
Victor looked toward the hospital window.
“Explain.”
“Richard did not just introduce Nathan to Claire.”
“He created the opportunity.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
“That is what I am trying to understand.”
Daniel paused.
“But I found something interesting.”
“What?”
“Richard had financial problems.”
Victor frowned.
“How serious?”
“Very.”
“Three years ago, his company almost collapsed.”
Victor looked at the documents on his desk.
“Then how is he still wealthy?”
Daniel answered:
“Because someone saved him.”
Victor already knew the answer.
“Who?”
“Nathan’s family.”
Silence.
The connection became clearer.
Richard had not found Nathan.
Nathan had found Richard.
Or perhaps…
Richard had been searching for someone like Nathan.
“Why would the Mercers help him?”
Daniel continued.
“Because they share something.”
“What?”
“They believe people are only valuable if they can be controlled.”
Victor leaned back.
For years, he had studied enemies.
Different countries.
Different languages.
Different backgrounds.
But the same patterns always appeared.
Power.
Control.
Fear.
Richard and the Mercers were not random.
They were similar.
They understood each other.
And that made them dangerous.
Daniel sent another file.
Victor opened it.
Inside was a series of messages.
Richard to Nathan.
Nathan to Richard.
The conversations were disturbing.
Not because they were emotional.
Because they were cold.
Calculated.
One message caught Victor’s attention.
Nathan had written:
"Her father needs to understand that his reputation does not matter anymore."
Richard replied:
"He will break when he realizes he cannot protect everyone."
Victor read the sentence several times.
Then he closed the file.
“They were testing me.”
Daniel was silent.
“Yes.”
Victor looked out the window.
“They wanted a reaction.”
“They wanted me angry.”
“They wanted me to make a mistake.”
Daniel’s voice became serious.
“And are you?”
Victor looked at his reflection in the glass.
For a moment, he remembered every battlefield he had ever entered.
Every decision.
Every sacrifice.
Every person depending on him.
“No.”
“I am exactly where I need to be.”
After the call ended, Victor went to see Claire.
She was sitting up now.
A small improvement.
But the sadness in her eyes remained.
When she saw him, she forced a weak smile.
“Dad.”
Victor sat beside her.
“How are you feeling?”
“Like I got hit by a truck.”
For a moment, the old Claire appeared.
A small joke.
A little strength.
Victor smiled slightly.
“That sounds like you.”
She looked down.
“Did you find anything?”
Victor knew she already suspected the answer.
“Yes.”
Her expression changed.
“About Nathan?”
“Yes.”
“About his family?”
“Yes.”
Then she whispered:
“About Richard?”
Victor became quiet.
Claire closed her eyes.
“I knew it.”
“What did you know?”
“That something was wrong.”
Victor waited.
She continued.
“After Richard started talking to Nathan, everything changed.”
“How?”
“Nathan became obsessed with power.”
“He started talking differently.”
“Like he was repeating things someone else told him.”
Victor listened.
“What kind of things?”
Claire looked toward the window.
“He said kindness was weakness.”
“He said people only respect fear.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“Did Richard say that?”
“I don’t know.”
She paused.
“But it sounded like him.”
Victor gently held her hand.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“I need you to tell me everything.”
She looked nervous.
“Even if it sounds stupid?”
“Especially then.”
She took a deep breath.
“There was one night.”
“When?”
“About a month before Christmas.”
“What happened?”
“Nathan came home angry.”
“He was saying you had too much influence over me.”
Victor frowned.
“My influence?”
Claire nodded.
“He said I always chose you over him.”
Victor remained silent.
“Then Richard called.”
Victor looked up.
“While Nathan was angry?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
Claire closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“Nathan put him on speaker.”
Victor felt his chest tighten.
“What did Richard say?”
Claire’s voice became quieter.
“He said…”
She paused.
“‘Remember the plan.’”
The room became completely silent.
Victor stared at her.
“What plan?”
“I don’t know.”
“Dad, I swear.”
“I didn’t know what they were talking about.”
Victor believed her.
Because fear could not be faked.
Especially by his daughter.
He stood slowly.
“Dad?”
He turned.
“Where are you going?”
“To find the truth.”
She looked worried.
“Please be careful.”
Victor stopped.
The same words.
Again.
Everyone kept telling him the same thing.
Be careful.
Do not lose yourself.
Do not become what you hate.
He looked back at her.
“I will.”
That evening, Victor returned to the base.
But this time, he did not go to his office.
He went to the training field.
Thirty-two Special Forces candidates were finishing their exercises.
Young soldiers.
Focused.
Disciplined.
They noticed him immediately.
The entire field became quiet.
Victor walked toward them.
“Drop everything.”
Everyone stopped.
One candidate stepped forward.
“Sir?”
Victor looked at the group.
“Today’s lesson is different.”
The soldiers waited.
“Most people think strength means hitting harder.”
“Moving faster.”
“Being louder.”
He paused.
“They are wrong.”
Victor looked across the field.
“Real strength is knowing exactly when to move.”
The candidates listened.
“Because the person who reacts emotionally can be controlled.”
“But the person who stays calm…”
He paused.
“Controls the entire situation.”
The soldiers understood.
This was not just training.
This was a message.
Victor turned away.
Because the next phase had begun.
Not revenge.
Not anger.
Preparation.
Meanwhile, across town, Nathan Mercer sat inside his expensive home.
He looked comfortable.
Confident.
He believed everything was under control.
His family believed the same.
They laughed.
They celebrated.
They thought Claire was defeated.
They thought Victor would eventually accept what happened.
Then Nathan’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A voice spoke.
Only one sentence.
“You made a mistake.”
Nathan frowned.
“Who is this?”
The call ended.
Nathan stared at the phone.
For the first time since Christmas Eve…
A small feeling appeared.
Doubt.
May you like
Because somewhere in the distance, a man who had spent his entire life preparing for impossible situations had finally started moving.
And Nathan Mercer had no idea what was coming.
