Chapter 13 - The Last Attempt To Break HerVictor Hale had spent his entire life preparing for dangerous situations.

He had trained soldiers to recognize threats.
He had studied enemies who hid behind weapons.
He had faced people who wanted him gone.
But Adrian Blake was different.
Adrian did not attack with force.
He attacked with ideas.
He planted doubts.
He created conflicts.
He convinced people to destroy themselves.
That made him more dangerous than anyone Victor had faced before.
Because a person with anger could be predicted.
A person with hatred could be understood.
But a person who believed they were doing something logical…
That person could justify anything.
Victor returned to the hospital immediately after Daniel’s call.
The entire drive, one thought repeated in his mind.
Claire.
Not revenge.
Not Adrian.
Not Nathan.
Claire.
Because Adrian had revealed his weakness.
He believed people were only valuable because of their vulnerabilities.
He believed everyone had a breaking point.
Victor knew he wanted to prove his theory.
And Adrian’s final experiment was his daughter.
When Victor entered Claire’s room, he immediately noticed something was wrong.
She was sitting silently.
Too silently.
The nurse standing nearby looked concerned.
Victor walked closer.
“Claire?”
She looked up.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“Dad.”
Victor sat beside her.
“What happened?”
She looked at the floor.
“He called me.”
Victor’s expression changed.
“Who?”
Claire swallowed.
“Adrian.”
For a moment, the room felt colder.
“When?”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“Because…”
She hesitated.
“Because he knew things.”
Victor leaned forward.
“What things?”
Claire looked at him.
“Things only family should know.”
Victor remained calm.
“What did he say?”
She took a deep breath.
“He said you were going to lose.”
Victor said nothing.
“He said everyone who stood with you would eventually leave.”
Victor watched her carefully.
“Anything else?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“He said…”
She stopped.
Victor gently held her hand.
“Tell me.”
“He said Mom was right.”
Victor froze slightly.
“About what?”
“That you always choose missions over people.”
The words were painful.
Not because they were true.
Because Adrian knew exactly which wound to touch.
Victor had spent years carrying that guilt.
The missed birthdays.
The missed holidays.
The moments he was protecting others while missing moments with his own daughter.
Adrian had studied him.
He knew.
But he did not understand something.
Knowing a wound existed did not mean knowing how to break someone.
Victor looked at Claire.
“Do you believe him?”
She looked surprised.
“What?”
“Do you believe what he said?”
Claire remained silent.
Then slowly shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
She looked at him.
“Because when I needed you…”
Her voice broke.
“You came.”
Victor looked away for a moment.
Because those words meant more than anything.
Across town, Adrian watched the security footage from the hospital.
Not because he wanted to see Claire.
Because he wanted to see Victor’s reaction.
He studied behavior.
Emotion.
Movement.
Patterns.
His entire career was built on understanding people.
His assistant stood nearby.
“She did not break.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“No.”
“Why not?”
Adrian watched Victor sit beside his daughter.
“Because I misunderstood something.”
The assistant looked confused.
“What?”
Adrian leaned closer.
“I thought Victor’s attachment to Claire was a weakness.”
He paused.
“But it is not.”
“It is his source of strength.”
The assistant waited.
“So what now?”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“Now we remove the strength.”
The next morning, Victor received a message.
One file.
One video.
One warning.
"Watch carefully."
He opened it.
The video showed Claire leaving the hospital.
Not the recent footage.
Older footage.
Months before Christmas.
Claire walking into a building.
Meeting someone.
Victor watched closely.
Then he saw the person she met.
His expression changed.
Because it was impossible.
Claire had met Adrian before.
Long before the attack.
Victor immediately called her.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“Did you know Adrian before Christmas?”
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Victor closed his eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought it was nothing.”
“What happened?”
Claire took a breath.
“He contacted me.”
“About what?”
“About you.”
Victor became still.
“Explain.”
Claire’s voice became quieter.
“He said he wanted to understand you.”
“He said he was writing a profile about successful leaders.”
Victor frowned.
“And you believed him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he seemed kind.”
Victor looked down.
The same pattern.
The same method.
Adrian did not force his way into people’s lives.
He entered through trust.
“What did he ask?”
Claire hesitated.
“Everything.”
“Everything?”
“About your childhood.”
“Your career.”
“Your fears.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“What did you tell him?”
Claire looked ashamed.
“I told him about you.”
Victor immediately softened.
“Claire.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
“But I helped him.”
“No.”
Victor’s voice became firm.
“You trusted someone who lied.”
“That is not your crime.”
That afternoon, Daniel uncovered the final piece.
The information was shocking.
Adrian had done this before.
Not physically.
Not publicly.
But psychologically.
Years earlier, he had destroyed another powerful person.
A businessman.
A politician.
A military official.
Different targets.
Same method.
Find the emotional weakness.
Apply pressure.
Create collapse.
Daniel sent the report.
Victor read it slowly.
At the bottom was Adrian’s personal philosophy.
A quote from his private journal.
"People are not broken by pain."
"They are broken when they realize the person they trusted cannot save them."
Victor closed the document.
Now he understood.
Adrian did not want Claire injured.
He wanted Claire to stop believing in him.
He wanted Victor’s daughter to look at her father and see failure.
That was the real attack.
Not the broken jaw.
Not the video.
Not the humiliation.
The real goal was destroying the bond between them.
And that was why Adrian had made his biggest mistake.
He underestimated what that bond actually was.
That evening, Victor visited Adrian’s office.
This time, he did not sit.
He stood.
Adrian looked surprised.
“You came back.”
Victor placed a folder on the desk.
“You wanted to understand strength.”
Adrian smiled.
“Yes.”
“Then watch.”
Victor opened the folder.
Inside were all the documents.
Every secret.
Every connection.
Every illegal action.
Adrian’s smile slowly disappeared.
“You cannot prove everything.”
Victor nodded.
“Maybe not everything.”
“But enough.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You think this ends with me?”
Victor stepped closer.
“No.”
“It ends with everyone.”
Adrian studied him.
“You still do not understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“No.”
Adrian smiled again.
“You think exposing me protects Claire.”
Victor said nothing.
Adrian leaned forward.
“But Claire is already damaged.”
Victor’s expression changed.
Not because he believed him.
Because he recognized the tactic.
Adrian wanted him to react.
Victor remained calm.
“That is your mistake.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
“You think damage means defeat.”
Victor looked directly into his eyes.
“My daughter survived something designed to destroy her.”
“She is stronger because she survived.”
Adrian stared at him.
For the first time…
He looked uncertain.
Victor turned toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
“One more thing.”
Adrian looked up.
“Yes?”
“You spent your whole life studying people.”
“You should have studied one more thing.”
“What?”
Victor answered:
“Love.”
Then he walked away.
That night, Adrian received a message.
Not from Victor.
Not from Daniel.
From someone unexpected.
The message contained only four words.
"Your plan failed."
Adrian stared at the screen.
Because there was only one person who could send that message.
Someone who knew everything.
Someone who had been silent from the beginning.
Someone who was now afraid.
Adrian whispered:
“No…”
Because for the first time, the person who controlled everyone else realized something terrifying.

He was not the final player.
He was only another piece.
