Chapter 12 - The Hand Behind The CurtainVictor Hale read Daniel’s message three times.

Not because he did not understand the words.
Because he understood them too well.
Evelyn was not the mastermind.
Someone had manipulated her.
Someone had studied her anger.
Someone had found an old wound and turned it into a weapon.
Victor placed the phone on the table.
For a moment, he said nothing.
The room was quiet.
But his mind was moving faster than ever.
Because this changed everything.
Evelyn was guilty.
Nathan was guilty.
Richard was guilty.
Robert was guilty.
James was guilty.
But none of them had started the fire.
They had only carried the matches.
Victor stood near the window of his office.
Outside, soldiers moved across the training field.
Young recruits running drills.
Learning discipline.
Learning teamwork.
Learning how to recognize threats before they became disasters.
Victor watched them for several seconds.
Then he whispered:
“Find the person who gave them the idea.”
Daniel arrived thirty minutes later.
He placed a thick folder on Victor’s desk.
“I think we found the connection.”
Victor opened it.
Inside were records from years ago.
Old meetings.
Old financial agreements.
Old communications.
Daniel pointed at one document.
“This is where it started.”
Victor looked at the page.
A consulting company.
A private organization.
A name appeared repeatedly.
Victor frowned.
“Who is this?”
Daniel looked serious.
“Someone who has been near every major decision.”
Victor continued reading.
The name appeared again.
And again.
Until finally, Victor understood.
The person was not hidden.
They were visible.
They were simply overlooked.
Because nobody expects the person standing beside them to be the one holding the knife.
Victor looked up.
“Adrian Blake.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Victor knew the name.
Everyone in his world knew the name.
Adrian Blake was considered one of the most brilliant strategic advisors in the country.
A man who helped companies recover.
A man who advised leaders.
A man who spoke about ethics and responsibility.
A man who always appeared when powerful people needed solutions.
Victor looked at the file.
“And his connection to Evelyn?”
Daniel turned the page.
“He approached her after your divorce.”
Victor stopped.
“What?”
“He became her advisor.”
Victor stared.
“For twenty years?”
“Yes.”
Daniel continued.
“He convinced her that you never valued her.”
“He convinced her that Claire’s loyalty to you was proof that she had lost.”
Victor slowly closed the file.
Adrian had not created the anger.
He had cultivated it.
Like a gardener growing something poisonous.
“How did we miss him?”
Daniel answered:
“Because he never attacked.”
“He guided.”
Victor nodded.
The most dangerous people were not always the ones who moved the pieces.
Sometimes they were the ones who convinced others to move them.
Across the city, Adrian Blake sat in his private office.
He was watching the news.
Nothing about Claire.
Nothing about Victor.
Nothing about the investigation.
That was exactly what he wanted.
Silence.
Control.
Predictability.
His assistant entered.
“Mr. Blake?”
“Yes?”
“Victor Hale knows about Evelyn.”
Adrian did not look surprised.
“I expected that.”
The assistant hesitated.
“He also knows about Richard.”
Adrian smiled slightly.
“That was inevitable.”
“And Robert?”
“Yes.”
The assistant became nervous.
“Then should we be concerned?”
Adrian finally looked up.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor still believes this is about justice.”
The assistant looked confused.
“And?”
Adrian leaned back.
“People searching for justice always follow rules.”
“They collect evidence.”
“They build cases.”
“They want the truth.”
He smiled.
“But people like me do not fear truth.”
The assistant asked:
“Then what do you fear?”
Adrian looked toward the window.
For a moment, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
“Someone who no longer cares about winning.”
Victor returned to the hospital that evening.
Claire was sitting up.
She looked stronger.
Not healed.
But stronger.
“Dad.”
Victor smiled.
“Hey.”
She studied him.
“You found the person.”
Victor paused.
“How do you know?”
“Because you look different.”
Victor sat down.
“Different how?”
“Before, you were angry.”
“And now?”
She looked into his eyes.
“Now you are focused.”
Victor smiled slightly.
She knew him better than anyone.
“I need to tell you something.”
Claire became serious.
“What?”
“The person behind this is not Nathan.”
She nodded slowly.
“I knew it.”
“You did?”
“Yes.”
Victor looked surprised.
Claire looked toward the window.
“Nathan was cruel.”
“But he was also insecure.”
“He needed people to tell him what to do.”
Victor listened carefully.
“Who?”
Claire hesitated.
“Adrian.”
Victor froze.
“You know him?”
Claire nodded.
“He came to the house once.”
“When?”
“Before Christmas.”
Victor leaned forward.
“What happened?”
“He talked to Nathan.”
“What about?”
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“About you.”
“What did he say?”
She closed her eyes.
“He said you were dangerous because people respected you.”
“He said you had too much influence.”
Victor remained silent.
“Then he looked at me.”
Claire’s voice became quieter.
“And he said something strange.”
“What?”
“He said…”
She swallowed.
“‘Every strong person has one place where they can be broken.’”
The room became silent.
Victor felt something cold move through him.
Because now he understood.
Adrian had never been trying to hurt Claire.
Not directly.
He was trying to prove a theory.
That every person had a weakness.
That every person could be controlled.
And he had chosen Victor’s daughter as an experiment.
That night, Victor met Adrian face-to-face.
Not in anger.
Not in secret.
In a public restaurant.
People everywhere.
Cameras everywhere.
Witnesses everywhere.
Adrian arrived exactly on time.
He smiled.
“Victor.”
“Adrian.”
They sat across from each other.
Two men who had spent years studying human behavior.
One hiding.
One searching.
Adrian looked amused.
“I have to admit.”
“What?”
“You impressed me.”
Victor said nothing.
“You found almost everything.”
“Almost?”
Adrian smiled.
“You still do not understand the purpose.”
Victor looked at him.
“The purpose was to hurt my daughter.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“The purpose was to prove something.”
“What?”
“That nobody is untouchable.”
Victor stared at him.
“You destroyed a family to prove a theory?”
Adrian leaned forward.
“Families are just systems.”
“Systems can be tested.”
Victor’s eyes hardened.
“Claire is not a system.”
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“She is your pressure point.”
The words hung in the air.
Victor remained calm.
But inside, he knew.
This man was different.
Nathan was cruel.
Richard was manipulative.
Robert was arrogant.
But Adrian…
Adrian was something else.
He did not hate.
He did not seek revenge.
He simply believed people were pieces on a board.
Victor stood.
“This conversation is over.”
Adrian looked up.
“You are walking away?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor looked at him.
“Because I already know what I needed to know.”
Adrian smiled.
“And what is that?”
Victor answered:
“You do not understand strength.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“No?”
Victor turned away.
“Because strength is not about breaking people.”
“It is about protecting them.”
As Victor left the restaurant, his phone rang.
Daniel.
Victor answered.
“Tell me.”
Daniel’s voice was urgent.
“Victor.”
“What happened?”
“We found something about Adrian.”
Victor stopped walking.
“What?”
A pause.
Then Daniel spoke.
“He has another target.”
Victor’s expression changed.
“Who?”
Daniel answered:
“Claire.”
Victor looked back toward the restaurant.
Adrian was still sitting there.
Watching him.
Smiling.
Because this was never the final move.
It was only the beginning.
And now Victor understood the real danger.
The people before him wanted revenge.
May you like
Adrian wanted control.
And people who wanted control never stopped after one victory.
