Chapter 19: The Masterpiece of Deception

Audrey
The lie tasted like ash, but I swallowed it down with a smile.
"That’s beautiful, Audrey," Elena noted, leaning forward. "But let’s address the elephant in the room. The isolation. You’ve been hiding here for four years. The public naturally assumes there’s a deeper rift. Why the secrecy?"
I felt Julian’s arm tighten around me, a silent promise of protection, but I knew I had to handle this one.
"It wasn't secrecy, Elena. It was sanctuary," I replied, weaving the truth into the lie. "When your husband is the CEO of a billion-dollar empire, you lose yourself in the flashbulbs and the galas. I needed to know I could build something with my own hands. Julian gave me the space to do that. He protected my peace."
Elena seemed satisfied, taking meticulous notes. "Well, the photos speak for themselves. You two look incredibly happy. Can we expect you back in New York soon, Audrey?"
"Eventually," I lied effortlessly. "But right now, the Whispering Pines needs my attention. And Julian is enjoying the quiet."
The interview wrapped up smoothly. The PR team packed their equipment, ecstatic with the results. They had their masterpiece of deception: the billionaire and his runaway wife, deeply in love, shutting down a malicious rumor. The article would drop in forty-eight hours, obliterating Madison's leverage.
As the convoy of black SUVs pulled away, leaving just Julian and a skeleton crew of security behind, the adrenaline finally crashed.
I retreated to the kitchen, leaning heavily against the granite counter and burying my face in my hands. The physical toll of pretending to be in love with the man who had shattered my world was excruciating.
"Audrey?"
I looked up. Julian was standing in the doorway. He looked just as exhausted as I felt. He had shed his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves.
"Where are the boys?" he asked softly.
"Mrs. Higgins has them in the playroom. They've been watching movies all day to stay out of the way."
Julian walked over, stopping a few feet away. "You were incredible today. You saved my company. You saved us."
"I did it for Leo and Lucas," I corrected sharply, though my voice lacked its usual bite. "I don't care about Foster Meridian. I care about Madison keeping her mouth shut about my sons."
"I know," Julian said, his eyes dropping to the floor. "But you still defended me. When you said we were rebuilding... did you mean any of it?"
I crossed my arms, shielding myself. "It was a PR interview, Julian. I gave them what they wanted."
"Right." He swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "Of course."
Suddenly, a loud, terrified wail echoed from the back hallway.
"Mama!"
My maternal instincts fired instantly. I shoved past Julian, sprinting down the hall toward the playroom. Julian was right on my heels.
I threw open the door. Leo was sitting on the floor, clutching his stomach, his face pale and covered in sweat. Lucas was kneeling next to him, patting his brother's back with a panicked expression.
"He throwed up, Mama!" Lucas cried.
I dropped to my knees, pulling Leo into my arms. He felt burning hot. "Shh, it's okay, baby. Mama's got you."
May you like
"Let me," Julian said. Before I could protest, he scooped Leo up into his strong arms with a gentleness that broke my heart. "I'll take him to the bathtub. Can you grab a thermometer and some medicine?"
I nodded, utterly relieved to have someone sharing the weight of the panic. For the next three hours, there were no billionaires, no scandals, and no cameras. We were just two parents, working side-by-side to comfort a sick child, and in the quiet trenches of parenthood, the lines between our past and our present began to dangerously blur.
