Chapter 12: The Ink of Betrayal

Julian

I leaned my forehead against the cold, varnished wood of her door, gasping for air as if I were drowning. My heart was hammering a violent rhythm against my ribs.

I had screwed up. I had underestimated the depth of Audrey’s trauma, the sheer magnitude of the terror she lived with every day. The moment she saw Eleanor, she didn't see a lawyer; she saw a mercenary coming to steal her children.

"Read them, Audrey," I whispered to the wood, praying my voice would carry through to the other side. "Please, just read the first page."

Inside the room, I heard the faint rustle of paper.

Audrey

I picked up the thick stack of documents, my hands shaking so violently the pages rattled against each other.

Legal Petition for Paternity and Custody Agreement.

I braced myself for the lethal blow, for the legal jargon that would strip me of my rights. But as my eyes scanned the first paragraph, a profound confusion washed over me.

...Julian Arthur Meridian hereby fully acknowledges paternity of Leo Hayes and Lucas Hayes. Furthermore, Julian Arthur Meridian unconditionally surrenders all rights to primary physical custody to Audrey Hayes.

I blinked, the tears blurring my vision. I wiped them away fiercely and kept reading.

...In the event of any legal dispute initiated by Julian Arthur Meridian or the Meridian family estate attempting to alter this primary custody arrangement, Julian Arthur Meridian will forfeit his entire voting share in Foster Meridian, alongside a penalty of five hundred million dollars to be placed in an irrevocable trust for Audrey Hayes.

My breath hitched. I dropped to my knees on the floor, the papers scattering around me.

This wasn't a petition to take the boys away. This was a legal guillotine Julian had built for himself. He was giving me sole physical custody, in writing, ironclad and undisputed. He was offering his billion-dollar empire as collateral to guarantee he would never, ever try to take them from me.

"Julian?" I whispered, staring at the pages in disbelief.

"The physical residence in New York," his muffled voice came through the door, sounding utterly defeated. "It was a clause Eleanor insisted on drafting just in case you ever wanted to move there, so my board couldn't claim I was abandoning the company to live in upstate New York. It was to protect you, Audrey."

I looked down at the documents again. He had signed the bottom of every page. He had already executed the trap on himself before he even handed them to me.

"Why?" I asked, leaning my back against the door. "Julian, your parents... your board... they will crucify you for this. You just weaponized your own company against yourself."

"Because I know you don't trust me," he replied, his voice heavy with sorrow. "And you have no reason to. I destroyed us. I broke every promise I ever made to you at the altar. Words mean nothing to you now, Audrey. So, I am giving you the only thing my family respects. Leverage."

I closed my eyes, a single sob tearing through my chest.

"If I ever hurt you again," Julian continued, his voice cracking. "If I ever try to take them, you trigger that contract. You take my company. You take my wealth. You take everything. It’s yours. All of it. I just want to know my sons."

Slowly, with trembling fingers, I reached up and unlocked the deadbolt.

I pulled the door open.

Julian was sitting on the floor in the hallway, his head in his hands, looking like a king who had lost his crown and didn't care. He looked up at me, his slate-gray eyes rimmed with red.

"Are you still running?" he asked quietly.

May you like

I looked at the duffel bag on the bed, then down at the man who had just handed me the sword to destroy him.

"No," I whispered. "I'm not running."
