Chapter 14: The Media Storm

Audrey
I rushed to the window and pulled back the lace curtain. My heart plummeted into my stomach.
Three dark vans and a handful of cars were skidding to a halt on the inn's front lawn, ignoring the designated parking spots. Doors flew open, and men and women armed with heavy cameras and microphones spilled out like a swarm of locusts.
"They're already here," I whispered in absolute horror.
My quiet, perfect sanctuary—the life I had meticulously built with my own two hands to protect my children—was being trampled in seconds. Flashes began going off blindly toward the windows of the inn.
"Stay away from the windows," Julian commanded, his voice completely shifting.
The desperate, emotional father was gone. In his place stood the ruthless, calculating CEO of Foster Meridian. He pulled his phone from his pocket, dialing a number with lightning speed.
"Marcus," Julian barked into the phone. "I have a paparazzi breach at the inn. I want a private security detail airlifted here immediately. I want the local police chief on the phone in two minutes to establish a perimeter, and I want every single license plate on this property logged and sued for trespassing. Move!"
He hung up, turning to me. "Where are the boys?"
"Sleeping," I stammered, my whole body shaking. "They're still sleeping."
"Good. Keep them in the back room. Do not let them look outside. I am going to handle this."
"Julian, you can't go out there!" I warned, grabbing his forearm. "If you go out there, you confirm the story! You confirm I'm here!"
"Audrey, they already know," he said, his expression hardening. "If I don't go out there and draw their fire, they are going to start banging on the doors and peering into the windows. They will terrify your guests and wake up my sons. I will not allow that."
He gently pried my hand off his arm. For the first time in four years, I looked at his immense power and wealth not as a threat, but as a shield.
Julian marched down the stairs and straight out the front door, slamming it shut behind him.
I ran to a side window, cracking the curtain just enough to see.
The moment Julian stepped onto the porch, absolute chaos erupted. Reporters shouted over each other, camera shutters clicked furiously like a machine gun.
"Julian! Is it true Audrey Meridian is hiding here?"
"Julian! Care to comment on the allegations made by Madison Carter?"
"Mr. Meridian! Is your marriage over?"
Julian didn't flinch. He stood at the top of the stairs, a solitary titan looking down at a pack of wolves. He raised one hand, and the sheer authority radiating from him commanded silence. The shouting slowly died down.
"You are trespassing on private property," Julian’s voice boomed, cold and lethal, echoing across the lawn. "In exactly ten minutes, the local authorities will be here to arrest every single one of you. My legal team is currently securing warrants to seize your cameras for evidence of criminal trespassing."
A murmur of nervous hesitation rippled through the press corps.
"Furthermore," Julian continued, his eyes narrowing into a dangerous glare. "To the tabloid that published my location: you will be receiving a lawsuit by the end of the hour that will bankrupt your publication. Now, get off my lawn."
"Julian, just one question!" a bold reporter in the front yelled. "Are the rumors true? Did Madison Carter destroy your marriage?"
May you like
Julian stepped down one step, his jaw locked in fury. "Madison Carter is a disgruntled former employee facing severe legal consequences for breaking her NDA. Her claims are fabricated trash. My wife and I are dealing with a private family matter. If any of you point a lens at her or this property again, I will make it my life's mission to ruin your careers. You have eight minutes before the police arrive."
He didn't say another word. He turned his back on them and walked back inside, the heavy door clicking shut just as the wail of police sirens echoed from the bottom of the mountain.
