Chapter 11: The Flight Response

Audrey

My lungs burned as I sprinted up the gravel path, the crisp autumn air tearing at my throat. Every instinct I possessed, honed over four years of hiding, screamed at me to run.

Petition for joint custody. Physical residence in New York.

The words echoed in my mind like a death knell. I burst through the back doors of the kitchen, startling Clara, who dropped a whisk into a bowl of batter.

"Audrey? Honey, what’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost," Clara asked, rushing toward me with flour-dusted hands.

"Where are the boys?" I gasped, my chest heaving.

"Mrs. Higgins took them up to your apartment to change them after they were down by the lake. Audrey, you're shaking."

I didn't answer. I bypassed the kitchen and flew up the back staircase that led to the owner's suite. I burst into the room. Mrs. Higgins was buttoning a fresh flannel shirt onto Lucas, while Leo was playing with his wooden blocks on the rug.

"Mama!" Lucas beamed.

"Mrs. Higgins, I need you to leave," I commanded, my voice trembling but sharp. "Right now. Please."

The older woman frowned, sensing the sheer panic radiating from my pores, but she nodded. "Of course, dear. I'll be downstairs if you need me."

The moment the door clicked shut, I rushed to the closet. I pulled down the heavy canvas duffel bag I kept on the top shelf. It was my emergency bag—the one I had packed four years ago and never fully unpacked. It had cash, our passports, and a change of clothes.

"What are we doing, Mama?" Leo asked, dropping his blocks and standing up. He could read my fear; twins always had that eerie intuition.

"We're going on a trip, baby," I lied, my voice cracking as I blindly shoved a handful of the boys' sweaters into the bag. "A really fast trip."

He lied to me. He played me. All the tears, all the tender moments with the boys over breakfast—it was a calculated performance by a ruthless CEO. Julian Meridian didn't lose. If he wanted his heirs, he would take them, and he had the billions to ensure I could never fight him in court.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

The heavy pounding on my apartment door made me physically scream. I spun around, grabbing the boys and pulling them behind my legs.

"Audrey! Open the door!" Julian’s voice roared from the hallway, thick with desperation. "Audrey, please!"

"Go away!" I screamed back, tears spilling hot and fast down my cheeks. I zipped the duffel bag with trembling hands. "Don't you dare come in here, Julian! I will call the police!"

"You didn't hear the whole conversation!" he shouted, rattling the brass doorknob. I had slid the heavy deadbolt shut, but the wood groaned under his weight. "Audrey, I swear to God, it's not what you think. Let me explain!"

"Explain what?!" I cried out, stepping closer to the door but keeping the boys safely behind me. "That you had your corporate shark of a lawyer draft custody papers behind my back? That you're taking them to New York? You want to strip me of the only things in this world that matter to me!"

"No! Audrey, listen to me—"

"I listened to you five years ago, Julian! And it broke me! I won't let you break them!"

I grabbed my car keys from the dresser. There was a fire escape off the back balcony. If I could just get the boys down the metal stairs, I could reach my ancient Subaru before he could circle around the building.

"Mama, I'm scared," Lucas whimpered, burying his face into my thigh.

My heart shattered into a million jagged pieces. I knelt down, framing their beautiful, terrified faces in my hands. "It's okay. Mama is going to protect you. I promise."

"Audrey!" Julian’s voice suddenly broke, slipping from an authoritative shout into a raw, agonizing sob. "Please. Look under the door. Just look at the papers. I am begging you. If you still want to run after you read them, I will hand you the keys to my own car and I won't follow you. I swear on my life."

I froze.

May you like

The frantic pounding stopped. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the hallway.

Then, a thick stack of pristine white legal paper was slowly pushed under the gap beneath the door.
