Chapter 13: Shadows of the Past

Julian

The tension in the owner’s suite slowly dissipated, replaced by a heavy, fragile exhaustion. Audrey had put the boys down for a nap, reading them a story until their breathing evened out.

Now, we sat in her small living room. I occupied a worn armchair, while she sat on the far end of the sofa, clutching a mug of tea as if it were a lifeline. The legal documents sat on the coffee table between us—a silent treaty ending a four-year war.

"So," Audrey said softly, staring into her mug. "You're really handing me the keys to your destruction."

"It's not destruction if I never betray you," I replied firmly. "And I won't. You have the ultimate insurance policy."

She looked up at me, her hazel eyes searching my face for any hint of deception. Finding none, she sighed, a sound that carried years of weariness. "Eleanor mentioned a liability issue. She said the board is threatening a vote of no confidence. What is happening in New York, Julian?"

I rubbed my temples, a massive headache beginning to form at the base of my skull. I didn't want to bring my poison into her sanctuary, but she deserved the truth.

"It's Madison," I said, watching her flinch at the name. I hated saying it. "When I fired her four years ago, I made her sign an ironclad Non-Disclosure Agreement. I gave her a massive severance package to walk away and never speak of what happened."

"And she broke it?"

"She's trying to," I explained, leaning forward. "Foster Meridian is in the middle of acquiring a massive European luxury brand. It’s the biggest deal of my career. The press is heavily focused on my personal life. My 'mysterious' bachelor status."

Audrey offered a bitter, humorless smile. "You mean your missing wife."

"Yes," I admitted. "Madison caught wind of the merger. She hired a sleazy PR firm. She’s threatening to go to the press with a fabricated story—claiming that we had a long-term affair, that I was emotionally abusive, and that her 'relationship' with me is the reason you fled in the middle of the night."

Audrey's grip on her mug tightened until her knuckles turned white. "That's a lie. It was one kiss. You told me it was one kiss."

"It was!" I said desperately. "But the media won't care about the truth. A scorned, missing wife and a billionaire boss abusing his power with his assistant? It’s front-page gold. If she leaks this, the European deal collapses, the board ousts me, and the company’s stock tanks."

"So fire your lawyers at her," Audrey countered. "Sue her into oblivion."

"I am. But it takes time. And right now, the rumor mill is already churning. And worse..." I hesitated, dread pooling in my stomach.

"What?" she demanded.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out. It was a Google News alert Marcus had set up. I stared at the screen, my blood turning to ice.

"Worse," I whispered, turning the phone around to show her the screen, "they found me."

The headline screamed in bold, black letters:
BILLIONAIRE CEO JULIAN MERIDIAN SPOTTED HIDING AT RURAL NY INN. IS THE MISSING WIFE FINALLY FOUND?

Beneath the headline was a blurry, zoomed-in photograph of me standing on the porch of the Whispering Pines Inn, with a faint silhouette of Audrey in the doorway.

Audrey dropped her mug. It shattered against the wooden floor, hot tea pooling around the ceramic shards.

"No," she gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "No, no, no."

"Audrey—"

"They know I'm here," she panicked, backing away from me. "The whole world knows I'm here. The press... Julian, they'll swarm this place. My guests, my business, my boys!"

May you like

"I won't let them near you!" I vowed, standing up.

But as if on cue, the distant, unmistakable sound of multiple vehicles speeding up the gravel driveway echoed through the quiet afternoon.
