Chapter 18 — The Final File

Chapter 18 — The Final File
The headline stayed on the screen.
I read it once.
Then again.
Still, my mind refused to accept it.

MYSTERY WOMAN CONNECTED TO HOLLOWAY SCANDAL ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD
My name.
My reputation.
My entire life.
All turned into a headline designed to make me look like the villain.
Just like Grant had done.
Just like the Holloways always did.
But this time…
The attack was different.
Because Victor Hale wasn’t trying to defend himself.
He was trying to erase me.
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“This happened ten minutes ago.”
Laura nodded.
“He moved fast.”
Michael looked worried.
“Faster than Grant.”
Everyone turned toward him.
“What do you mean?”
Michael looked at the documents on the table.
“Grant reacts emotionally.”
He pointed at the headline.
“Victor plans.”
That sentence made the room colder.
Because it explained everything.
Grant was dangerous because he was arrogant.
Victor was dangerous because he was patient.
“What exactly is he accusing me of?”
I asked.
Laura opened the article.
“They claim your father secretly transferred money through accounts connected to Holloway companies.”
My eyes widened.
“What?”
“They’re saying you inherited those accounts.”
Hannah immediately shook her head.
“That’s impossible.”
Laura nodded.
“I know.”
“But they don’t need it to be true.”
Daniel looked at the screen.
“They only need people to believe it long enough.”
Exactly.
The same strategy.
The same weapon.
Control the story before anyone can defend themselves.
Michael looked at me.
“There’s something you need to know.”
I already knew I wouldn’t like what came next.
“What?”
“Your father predicted this.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“He knew if the truth ever came out, Victor would attack the people closest to him.”
Michael walked toward the old documents.
“That’s why he created the final file.”
Laura looked up.
“The final file?”
Michael nodded.
“The one that proves who really controlled everything.”
For the first time that night…
Hope appeared.
Not much.
Just enough.
“What is in it?”
Michael looked at me.
“Everything.”
He opened the old metal box again.
“It contains the original records.”
“Records of what?”
“Every transaction.”
“Every agreement.”
“Every person they pressured.”
He paused.
“And every person who helped them.”
Daniel looked around.
“Then where is it?”
Michael’s expression changed.
“That’s the problem.”
“What?”
“It’s missing.”
Silence.
“What do you mean missing?”
Michael ran his hand through his hair.
“When I found your father’s things, the file wasn’t complete.”
Laura immediately stood.
“Someone took it.”
Michael nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew the answer.
Someone who knew what it was.
Someone who knew where to look.
Someone close enough to access it.
Robert suddenly looked uncomfortable.
I noticed.
“Robert.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“You know something.”
He hesitated.
Laura stepped forward.
“Tell us.”
Robert looked at the floor.
“Three years ago, I saw that file.”
Everyone froze.
“You saw it?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“In Victor Hale’s office.”
The room became silent.
Michael’s face changed.
“Impossible.”
Robert shook his head.
“It’s true.”
“Why was it there?”
“Because Victor had been searching for it.”
Daniel frowned.
“So he didn’t have it?”
Robert nodded.
“Not the entire thing.”
A pause.
“He had part of it.”
Laura walked toward Robert.
“What part?”
“The part connecting Holloway and Hale.”
She looked at the documents.
“The partnership.”
Robert nodded.
“But he was missing the evidence showing how far it went.”
I looked at him.
“And my father had that evidence.”
“Yes.”
A sudden realization hit me.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at me.
“My father didn’t hide the final file.”
Michael frowned.
“What?”
“He hid the location.”
I looked at the old letter.
My father knew someone might find his documents.
He knew someone might steal them.
So he wouldn’t leave everything in one place.
Laura’s eyes widened.
“You think he created a trail.”
I nodded.
“Exactly.”
We searched through every document again.
Every photograph.
Every note.
Every old piece of paper.
Then Hannah found something.
“Mom.”
I turned.
She was holding an old family photograph.
“What is it?”
She pointed at the back.
There was writing.
Small handwriting.
Almost invisible.
A message.
“The truth is where the first promise was made.”
Michael stared at it.
His face changed.
“No.”
“What?”
He looked terrified.
“I know where that is.”
Thirty minutes later, we arrived at the place.
The old community center where my parents first met.
The place where my father proposed to my mother.
The place where their entire story began.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Dust covered everything.
But Michael walked directly toward one room.
The old office.
He opened a cabinet.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside…
Was a small wooden box.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
My father’s handwriting.
Again.
This time, only one sentence.
“Evelyn, if you found this, you are finally ready.”
I couldn’t breathe.
I connected the drive.
A single video file appeared.
Created twenty-five years ago.
The screen loaded.
Then my father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then his voice filled the room.
“Evelyn.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“If you are watching this, then the truth survived.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“I need you to understand something.”
A pause.
“The Holloways were never the biggest danger.”
Everyone froze.
My father continued:
“The person behind everything is someone who knows how to make people fight each other.”
The video paused briefly.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“Victor Hale did not build this alone.”
My heart stopped.
My father continued.
“He had help.”
The room became silent.
“Someone inside my family.”
Hannah grabbed my hand.
“No…”
My father looked more serious.
“Someone I trusted.”
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Because now we had another question.
Not who betrayed my father.
Not who helped Victor Hale.
But who inside my own family had been working with him all along.
Then Michael’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No one spoke.
Then a voice whispered:
“You found the file.”
Michael’s face went pale.
The voice continued:
“But you’re too late.”
The call ended.
And immediately…
Every light in the building went out.
Darkness surrounded us.
Then a figure appeared at the doorway.
Someone we recognized.
Someone who had been searching with us.
Someone who had claimed to want the truth.
And they said:
“I’m sorry, Evelyn.”
A pause.
“But your father never knew the whole story.”
The final secret had been found.
But the person who could explain it…
May you like
Was standing right in front of us.
The truth was closer than ever.
