Chapter 17 — The Name on My Father’s Letter

Chapter 17 — The Name on My Father’s Letter

The room felt smaller after I spoke the name.

Not because the walls moved.

Because everyone’s understanding of the past had changed.

One word.

One name.

And suddenly every missing piece seemed connected.

The secrets.

The lies.

The fear.

The reason my father disappeared.

The reason the Holloways had spent decades protecting their empire.

All of it pointed toward the same person.

I looked down at the letter again.

My father’s handwriting was unmistakable.

The final lines were written with a warning.

“Do not trust someone simply because they stands beside you when the truth begins to come out.”

A chill ran through me.

My father had known.

He knew one day someone would find this.

He knew the person who helped build the Holloway empire might still be nearby.

Waiting.

Watching.

“Mom…”

Hannah’s voice brought me back.

She looked at me carefully.

“Who is it?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because saying the name out loud made it real.

But secrets only survive when people are afraid to speak them.

So I turned the letter around.

Everyone read the name.

Everyone except one person.

Robert Ellis.

Because the moment he saw it…

His face changed.

Laura noticed.

“You recognize that name.”

It wasn’t a question.

Robert stayed silent.

That silence was enough.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Robert.”

He finally looked up.

“I knew this day would come.”

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Robert looked at the letter.

“It means your father was closer to the truth than anyone realized.”

The name on the paper belonged to:

Victor Hale.

A businessman who had been known for years as one of the Holloway family’s closest allies.

A man who appeared in old photographs.

A man who helped fund their expansion.

A man who was always described as a “trusted partner.”

But according to my father…

He was something else.

“Who is Victor Hale?” Hannah asked.

Michael answered quietly.

“The person who taught the Holloways how to control people.”

Everyone looked at him.

Michael continued.

“Grant’s father was powerful.”

“But Victor was smarter.”

Laura frowned.

“How?”

“Grant’s father used money.”

Michael looked at the documents.

“Victor used information.”

Robert sat down.

“I need to tell you everything.”

Nobody interrupted.

Because we all knew this was the moment we had been waiting for.

The missing piece.

The beginning of everything.

“Twenty-five years ago, Holloway Select Markets was not the empire it is today.”

Robert began.

“They were struggling.”

He looked at the old photographs.

“Victor Hale approached them with a solution.”

“What solution?”

“Control.”

The word echoed.

“He taught them that the easiest way to defeat an enemy was not to fight them.”

Robert paused.

“It was to know their weaknesses before they knew yours.”

Laura opened another file.

“So the Holloways collected secrets.”

Robert nodded.

“Everyone’s secrets.”

“Employees.”

“Business partners.”

“Politicians.”

“Competitors.”

Anyone who could threaten them.

They found something to hold over them.

And if they couldn’t find something…

They created it.

Hannah’s expression changed.

“Rachel.”

Robert nodded.

“Rachel was dangerous to them because she wasn’t afraid anymore.”

“And my mother?”

I looked at him.

“Margaret?”

Robert’s face became serious.

“She was not the person who created this.”

A pause.

“But she became very good at protecting it.”

The truth was becoming clearer.

Grant wasn’t the beginning.

He was the result.

A product of a system built long before him.

A system that taught people one lesson:

Power belonged to those who could control the story.

Then Daniel noticed something.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed to the letter.

“Your father wrote that the person who helped build their empire was someone they trusted.”

He looked at me.

“But why would Victor Hale be connected to your family?”

That was the question.

The question nobody had asked yet.

Until now.

I looked at Michael.

He looked away.

My heart sank.

“You know.”

Michael was silent.

“Michael.”

Finally, he spoke.

“Victor Hale wasn’t just connected to the Holloways.”

A pause.

“He was connected to us.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

Michael looked at me.

“Because before he became their partner…”

He swallowed.

“He was your mother’s business partner.”

The room went silent.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.”

Michael looked at the letter.

“Your father discovered the truth after your mother trusted Victor with the family business.”

A memory suddenly returned.

A memory I hadn’t thought about in years.

My mother arguing with someone on the phone.

Her saying:

“I made a mistake trusting you.”

At the time, I thought it was just a business problem.

Now…

I wasn’t so sure.

Then Robert stood.

“There’s something else.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”

He reached into his bag.

“I found this before I left the Holloway firm.”

He placed another document on the table.

A contract.

An old one.

The title was clear:

Hale-Holloway Strategic Partnership Agreement

Signed by:

Victor Hale.

Grant Holloway’s father.

And…

My mother.

I couldn’t move.

My mother’s signature stared back at me.

A signature from a past I thought I understood.

A past that was apparently built on secrets.

Hannah came closer.

“Mom…”

I looked at her.

“I don’t know what to think.”

She hugged me.

And for the first time in this entire battle…

I realized something.

The truth wasn’t only painful because of what happened.

It was painful because it changed the way we remembered the people we loved.

Then Laura’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her face immediately changed.

“What?”

Everyone watched her.

She listened for several seconds.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?” Daniel asked.

She looked at me.

“It’s Victor Hale.”

My heart stopped.

“What about him?”

Laura took a breath.

“He just made a public statement.”

“What did he say?”

She looked at the screen.

“Victor Hale claims Evelyn Carter is responsible for the collapse of the Holloway family reputation.”

Everyone froze.

Daniel shook his head.

“He’s attacking her now.”

Laura nodded.

“But that’s not the worst part.”

“What is?”

She turned the phone around.

A headline was displayed.

MYSTERY WOMAN CONNECTED TO HOLLOWAY SCANDAL ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD

My blood ran cold.

Because the mystery woman…

Was me.

The battle had changed again.

Grant Holloway was no longer the only enemy.

A new player had entered.

A man who had been hiding in the shadows for twenty-five years.

Victor Hale.

And he had just made his first move.

But what he didn’t know…

Was that my father had prepared for this day.

And he left one final piece of evidence behind.

May you like

A piece of evidence that could destroy everything Victor Hale built.

The final file was still missing.
