Chapter 15 — The Night My Father Disappeared

Chapter 15 — The Night My Father Disappeared
For several seconds after Grant’s words echoed through the basement, nobody moved.
Not because we didn’t hear him.
Because we did.

And every person in that room understood the same thing.
Grant Holloway had just revealed the one weapon he thought would break me.
My past.
My family.
My father.
I turned toward Michael.
“Tell me.”
He looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Not because he was hiding something.
Because he had been hiding it for years.
“Michael.”
My voice became sharper.
“What happened that night?”
Hannah stood beside me.
“Uncle Michael…”
Her voice was softer.
But full of pain.
“You knew something.”
Michael closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked older than I had ever seen him.
“I wanted to protect you.”
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
I pointed toward the locked basement door.
“Grant protected himself.”
I looked at Robert.
“You protected your career.”
Then I looked back at my brother.
“And you protected me from the truth.”
Silence.
“You all decided I couldn’t handle it.”
Michael looked at me.
“I was wrong.”
A loud knock hit the basement door.
Grant.
“Evelyn.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You don’t want to hear this from him.”
I stepped closer.
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because Michael wasn’t the hero he wants you to believe he was.”
Everyone looked at Michael.
His face changed.
Grant continued.
“He knows exactly what happened.”
My hands tightened.
“Open the door.”
A quiet laugh.
“You still think this is about a door?”
Then silence.
“You’re finally asking the right questions.”
Michael walked toward the center of the room.
“I need to tell you.”
Everyone watched him.
“I was twenty-eight years old when your father disappeared.”
I said nothing.
“He was working with Holloway Financial.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“Because they hired him to review their accounts.”
Michael looked at the documents covering the walls.
“At first, he thought they were just aggressive businessmen.”
He gave a bitter smile.
“Then he started finding things.”
Laura spoke quietly.
“Illegal transactions.”
Michael nodded.
“Money laundering. Fake companies. Payments to people who helped cover their actions.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And your father wanted to expose them.”
“Yes.”
I stared at the floor.
I remembered my father.
His laugh.
His old coat.
The way he used to bring me breakfast before school.
The way he promised he would always come home.
But he didn’t.
One day, he was there.
Then he wasn’t.
And everyone told me the same thing.
Accident.
Bad timing.
Nothing anyone could change.
But now…
I knew.
“What happened that night?”
My voice barely worked.
Michael swallowed.
“Your father called me.”
The room became silent.
“He told me he had proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“Proof that the Holloways had been manipulating everything.”
Michael looked at Robert.
“Even people inside the company.”
Robert lowered his head.
“He was going to expose them.”
I looked at Robert.
“You knew?”
Robert nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Anger burned inside me.
“You knew my father?”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“I was young. I was afraid.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was afraid.”
Michael continued.
“Your father told me he was meeting someone that night.”
“Who?”
Michael hesitated.
Then answered:
“Grant’s father.”
Everyone froze.
“He thought he could convince him to stop.”
Laura shook her head.
“That was a mistake.”
Michael nodded.
“Yes.”
The basement lights flickered.
For a second, everyone looked upward.
Then Grant spoke again from behind the door.
“Your father was always too trusting.”
I stepped closer.
“You knew him.”
“Yes.”
The calmness in his voice made my skin crawl.
“He believed people could change.”
I clenched my fists.
“And you proved him wrong.”
Silence.
Then:
“Your father made choices.”
My voice rose.
“No.”
I looked at the door.
“You made choices.”
Suddenly, Robert stepped forward.
“Grant.”
Everyone turned.
Robert looked toward the door.
“You’ve already lost.”
A long silence followed.
Then Grant laughed.
“Have I?”
Robert continued.
“You think destroying evidence destroys the truth.”
Another pause.
“But you forgot something.”
“What?”
Robert looked at us.
“People remember.”
Grant became quiet.
For the first time…
He sounded uncertain.
“What did you do?”
Robert smiled slightly.
“I copied everything.”
Laura’s eyes widened.
“You had another backup?”
Robert nodded.
“The original files.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Where?”
Robert reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small device.
“I sent them before coming here.”
Everyone froze.
“To who?”
Robert looked at me.
“Multiple places.”
Then the basement door shook.
Hard.
Grant was no longer calm.
“Robert.”
The anger in his voice was obvious.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
Robert looked at the door.
“No.”
His voice became stronger.
“I finally know what I’ve done.”
A second later, sirens could be heard outside.
Everyone looked toward the ceiling.
Daniel smiled slightly.
“Police?”
Robert nodded.
“Not just police.”
Laura checked her phone.
Her eyes widened.
“News stations are here too.”
Grant’s silence was louder than any threat.
Because he finally understood.
He couldn’t control this anymore.
The basement door opened moments later.
Not because Grant opened it.
Because officers forced it.
The hallway filled with voices.
Commands.
Footsteps.
And standing outside the basement…
Was Grant Holloway.
For the first time, he didn’t look powerful.
He looked cornered.
But even then…
He smiled.
That scared me.
Because men like Grant didn’t smile when they lost.
They smiled when they had one final move.
As officers approached him, Grant looked directly at me.
“Evelyn.”
I stared back.
“What?”
He leaned closer.
“You still don’t know the whole story.”
I didn’t respond.
“You think exposing me ends this?”
His smile widened.
“It doesn’t.”
A pause.
“Because your father’s secret wasn’t about the Holloways.”
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?”
Grant whispered:
“It was about your family.”
The officers pulled him away.
But his words stayed.
Because once again…
Grant Holloway had planted a question.
And I hated that part of me believed him.
Later that night, after everything settled, Laura opened the final file Robert had sent.
The name on the document made everyone freeze.
Not Grant.
Not Holloway.
Not Whitmore.
A name I recognized.
A name from my own past.
My father’s name.
And underneath it…
A message he had written twenty-five years earlier.
“If anything happens to me, Evelyn must never know the truth until she is ready.”
I stared at the screen.
My hands trembled.
Because after everything we had uncovered…
I finally understood.
The Holloway family secret was only the beginning.
The real mystery…
May you like
Was my father’s.
To be continued.
