Chapter 13 — The Man Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 13 — The Man Who Knew Too Much
The black SUV disappeared before we could reach the street.
Whoever was inside didn’t want a confrontation.
They wanted us to know they were watching.
That was the difference.
A threat wasn’t always a threat because of what it did.

Sometimes it was a threat because of what it promised.
And that SUV promised one thing.
The people hiding the truth were getting nervous.
We closed Carter’s Table early.
For the first time in twenty years, I locked the doors before sunset.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I needed answers.
And I knew those answers were waiting with my brother.
Michael had always been the person who told me to be careful.
The person who showed up when things were difficult.
The person who helped me rebuild after losing my husband.
But now I had one question.
What else had he been protecting me from?
The drive to Michael’s house felt longer than usual.
Nobody talked much.
Hannah sat beside me.
Daniel drove.
Laura sat in the passenger seat, reviewing every document we had collected.
Finally, Hannah broke the silence.
“Mom.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“Do you think Uncle Michael hurt us?”
The question hurt more than I expected.
Because I knew why she asked.
After everything Grant had done, trust had become complicated.
“I don’t know.”
She looked out the window.
“I hate that answer.”
“So do I.”
A pause.
“But sometimes the truth starts with admitting what we don’t know.”
She nodded slowly.
Michael lived outside the city.
A quiet neighborhood.
The kind of place where people waved at their neighbors and left doors unlocked.
The kind of place that didn’t look like it held dangerous secrets.
But I had learned something.
Secrets didn’t need dark rooms.
They could live anywhere.
When we arrived, the front door was already open.
My heart dropped.
“Michael?”
No answer.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Stay behind me.”
We entered slowly.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
The living room looked untouched.
A coffee cup sat on the table.
A newspaper was open.
A chair was pulled away.
Like someone had been sitting there only minutes ago.
Then I saw it.
A piece of paper on the floor.
My name was written on it.
Evelyn.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
Inside were only three words.
Basement. Now.
The basement door was unlocked.
Michael’s basement had always been storage.
Old furniture.
Boxes.
Family memories.
But tonight…
It was something else.
Daniel turned on the light.
And everyone froze.
The walls were covered.
Photographs.
Documents.
Newspaper articles.
Names.
Dates.
Connections.
A complete history.
A history of the Holloway family.
Hannah slowly walked toward the wall.
“Oh my God.”
She touched one of the photographs.
It showed Grant’s father.
Beside him was another man.
Younger.
But familiar.
Michael.
My breath stopped.
“You knew them.”
The voice behind us made everyone turn.
Michael stood at the top of the stairs.
He looked exhausted.
Older.
Like he had been carrying this secret alone for decades.
“Evelyn…”
I turned toward him.
“How long?”
He looked down.
“Twenty-five years.”
The anger came before the sadness.
“You knew about them for twenty-five years?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“You were deciding what I was allowed to know.”
Michael looked away.
And that silence told me enough.
Laura stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, we need answers.”
Michael nodded.
“I know.”
He walked down the stairs slowly.
“I was hoping this day would never come.”
“Why?”
He looked at the wall.
“Because once the truth comes out, nobody gets to go back.”
I looked around.
“Start talking.”
Michael took a deep breath.
“Grant Holloway’s family was never as clean as they appeared.”
Daniel crossed his arms.
“We know that.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“You know what they did to individuals.”
He pointed at the wall.
“You don’t know what they built.”
The room became silent.
“Twenty-five years ago, Holloway Select Markets was struggling.”
Michael walked toward the photographs.
“They were losing money. Investors were leaving.”
He picked up an old file.
“Then everything changed.”
“What happened?” I asked.
“They discovered how valuable information could be.”
Laura frowned.
“Information?”
Michael nodded.
“Secrets.”
He looked at me.
“They collected them.”
A chill ran through me.
“What kind of secrets?”
“Business secrets. Personal secrets. Family secrets.”
He placed the file down.
“Anything they could use against someone.”
Michael explained everything.
The Holloways didn’t just protect their reputation.
They built a network.
A network of favors.
Pressure.
Leverage.
People who owed them.
People who feared them.
People who stayed quiet because speaking out would destroy their own lives.
“That’s why nobody stopped Grant,” Michael said.
“He wasn’t just one powerful man.”
“He was protected by everyone who benefited from his power.”
Hannah stared at the wall.
“Rachel knew.”
Michael nodded.
“She discovered part of it.”
“And they silenced her.”
Michael looked down.
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“Did you know?”
His silence answered before his words did.
“I suspected.”
The room went cold.
“You suspected?”
Michael looked at me.
“I tried to help her.”
“You knew she was in danger.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing?”
His face broke.
“I was afraid.”
That confession hurt.
Because Michael wasn’t Grant.
He wasn’t cruel.
He was someone who became silent because he was scared.
But silence still had consequences.
Then Michael pulled out a small box.
“I kept this because I knew someday someone would need it.”
Inside was a document.
Old.
Faded.
Signed.
Laura picked it up.
Her eyes widened.
“What is this?”
Michael answered:
“The original agreement between Grant’s father and the people who helped build their empire.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“What people?”
Michael looked at me.
“That’s the part I never wanted you to know.”
I stared at him.
“Tell me.”
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Your father was involved.”
The words hit harder than anything before.
“My father?”
Michael nodded.
“He wasn’t working for them.”
A pause.
“But he knew what they were doing.”
My hands went cold.
“What are you saying?”
Michael looked at the document.
“I’m saying the Holloways weren’t the only family with secrets.”
Before anyone could speak, the basement lights suddenly went out.
Darkness filled the room.
Hannah grabbed my arm.
“What happened?”
Then we heard it.
Footsteps upstairs.
Someone was inside the house.
Michael whispered:
“They found us.”
Daniel moved toward the stairs.
“Who?”
Michael’s voice was barely audible.
“The people who made sure this secret stayed buried.”
A shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.
And then a voice spoke.
A voice we recognized.
A voice that made everyone freeze.
“Evelyn…”
The person stepped into the light.
And I realized the truth was about to become even more dangerous.
Because the person standing there…
May you like
Was someone I never expected.
Ten minutes remained.
