Chapter 10 — The Moment the Holloway Empire Started Cracking

Chapter 10 — The Moment the Holloway Empire Started Cracking

Grant Holloway thought the court order had saved him.

That was the message his lawyers wanted everyone to believe.

They released another statement before noon.

A statement filled with confidence.

A statement designed to make him look untouchable.

“The Holloway family remains committed to defending itself against false and harmful allegations. We are confident the truth will prevail.”

The truth.

That word almost felt insulting.

Because for years, Grant had used it like a weapon.

He said the truth was whatever he could convince people to accept.

But he had forgotten something.

Truth did not need a public relations team.

It only needed one chance to be heard.

At Carter’s Table, we worked in silence.

Not the fearful silence from a few days earlier.

A different kind.

The kind that came before a storm.

Laura organized the files.

Daniel reviewed every document.

Hannah sat beside me, reading Rachel’s notes again.

I watched her carefully.

“You don’t have to do this.”

She looked up.

“Yes, I do.”

Her answer was immediate.

“Mom, for years I thought I was the only one.”

She looked at Rachel’s handwriting.

“I thought something was wrong with me.”

My heart broke.

“There was never anything wrong with you.”

She nodded.

“I know that now.”

Then she closed the folder.

“And I want other people to know it too.”

At two in the afternoon, Laura received confirmation.

She looked at her laptop.

“It’s done.”

Everyone stopped.

“What happened?” Daniel asked.

She turned the screen around.

“The documents are public.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then phones started ringing.

One after another.

Messages.

Notifications.

News alerts.

The story had escaped.

Not through one television station.

Not through one newspaper.

Through hundreds of people sharing the information at once.

The Holloways could control a headline.

They couldn’t control thousands of people seeing the same evidence.

The first report appeared twenty minutes later.

FORMER HOLLOWAY ATTORNEY REVEALS SECRET SETTLEMENT AGREEMENTS

Then another.

DOCUMENTS RAISE QUESTIONS ABOUT HOLLOWAY FAMILY BUSINESS PRACTICES

Then another.

FORMER EMPLOYEES SPEAK OUT AFTER YEARS OF SILENCE

The same media outlets that had questioned us yesterday were now asking questions about Grant.

The direction had changed.

Completely.

Inside the Holloway mansion, Grant watched the coverage.

And for the first time in years…

He looked afraid.

The confident businessman from television was gone.

The perfect smile disappeared.

His hands tightened around his phone.

“They weren’t supposed to have those documents.”

Margaret Holloway stood across the room.

She looked calmer.

But even she couldn’t hide the tension in her face.

“I told you to handle this quietly.”

Grant turned toward her.

“I am handling it.”

“No.”

Her voice became colder.

“You’re losing control.”

That sentence angered him.

“I’m not losing anything.”

Margaret stared at him.

“Then why are you shouting?”

Silence.

Because she was right.

At Carter’s Table, we watched the numbers rise.

Thousands of people were reading the documents.

Thousands were sharing Rachel’s story.

Thousands were asking the same question.

How many people had the Holloways silenced?

Hannah stared at the screen.

“They’re believing us.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

She turned.

“What?”

“They’re finally seeing.”

That difference mattered.

Because we weren’t asking people to take our side.

We were asking them to look.

And once people saw the evidence…

They couldn’t pretend they hadn’t.

Then came the call.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered.

“Hello?”

A familiar voice responded.

Grant.

My entire body went still.

“Evelyn.”

I said nothing.

“I think we need to talk.”

I almost laughed.

A few days ago, those words would have frightened me.

Now?

They sounded desperate.

“You mean negotiate?”

A pause.

“I want to resolve this.”

“No.”

Silence.

“You don’t.”

His voice hardened slightly.

“You should be careful.”

There it was.

The real Grant.

The one behind the smile.

The one behind the carefully prepared statements.

“You’re making a mistake.”

I looked around the room.

At Hannah.

At the evidence.

At everyone who had finally found their voice.

“No, Grant.”

My voice stayed calm.

“You made the mistake.”

He was quiet.

Then he lowered his voice.

“You have no idea who you’re fighting.”

I looked toward the window.

At the customers sitting inside my diner.

People who had known me for years.

People who had watched me struggle.

People who knew exactly who I was.

“I know exactly who I’m fighting.”

I paused.

“And I know exactly why.”

The call ended.

Five minutes later, Laura rushed back into the room.

Her expression was different.

Not fear.

Concern.

“What happened?” Daniel asked.

She placed a document on the table.

“This just came in.”

I looked at the paper.

My heart sank.

“What is it?”

Laura took a breath.

“Grant is changing his strategy.”

“How?”

She looked at Hannah.

“He’s no longer trying to defend himself.”

A pause.

“He’s attacking someone else.”

Hannah frowned.

“Who?”

Laura slowly answered.

“You.”

The room froze.

“He filed a motion claiming Hannah was manipulated by you.”

My eyes widened.

“He’s saying I forced her?”

Laura nodded.

“He’s trying to make the victim look controlled by the person protecting her.”

Hannah’s face turned pale.

For a moment, I saw the old fear return.

The fear Grant had planted inside her.

But this time…

She didn’t break.

She stood.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her hands were shaking.

But her voice was strong.

“No more.”

She looked at the papers.

“He doesn’t get to tell my story anymore.”

That was the moment I realized something.

The battle had changed again.

Grant thought he was fighting me.

He wasn’t.

He was fighting every person he had convinced to stay quiet.

Every person he had made doubt themselves.

Every person who had believed they were powerless.

And now they were standing together.

The Holloway family had spent years building walls.

But walls had one weakness.

Eventually…

Someone found the cracks.

And once the cracks appeared…

May you like

The whole structure started falling.

Two hours remained.
