Chapter 5: Shadows of the Past

Three Days Later
Alessandro Moretti did not sleep. He calculated.
Sitting in his private study at 3:00 AM, the only light came from the glow of his encrypted monitors and the city lights bleeding through the rain-streaked windows.
On the screen in front of him was a deep-dive background check on Arthur Cole. Following the disastrous engagement party, Cole’s stock had taken a minor hit, but the man was already spinning the narrative. Tabloids were hinting that Alessandro was "unstable" and had imagined the entire fake pregnancy.
But Alessandro wasn’t looking at the PR spin. He was looking at a file his private investigator had just sent over.
Daniel Evans. Deceased.
When Arthur Cole’s fixer had threatened Clara in the basement, mentioning her husband's specific "construction accident," a red flag had gone up in Alessandro's mind. Men like Cole didn't use specific examples unless they were pulling from their own playbook.
Alessandro clicked open the police report from three years ago.
Daniel Evans, 28, a foreman at the Pier 42 Waterfront Development. Crushed by a falling steel beam during a late-night inspection. Ruled a tragic workplace accident. Case closed.
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. He opened a secondary program, running a trace on the shell corporations that owned the Pier 42 project at the time.
Oceanic Holdings.
Subsidiary of Apex Real Estate.
Subsidiary of... Cole Enterprises.
The blood in Alessandro's veins turned to ice.
He leaned back in his leather chair, his mind piecing the puzzle together with terrifying speed. Daniel Evans hadn't died in a random accident. According to Clara's employment file, her husband had gone to the site that night to document safety violations. Violations that would have stalled a multi-million dollar development owned by Arthur Cole.
Cole had Daniel killed to protect his investment.
And three years later, by some twisted stroke of fate, Daniel's widow had been the one to expose Cole's daughter and save Alessandro’s empire.
A knock on the study door pulled him from his dark thoughts.
The door creaked open, and Clara stood in the doorway. She was wearing a silk robe that one of the personal shoppers had brought for her, her hair tumbling down her shoulders in loose waves. She looked ethereal, vulnerable, and completely exhausted.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, hovering at the threshold. "I saw the light under the door. I couldn't sleep."
Alessandro quickly closed the laptop, hiding the files. He wasn't ready to tell her yet. If she knew the men who killed her husband were the same men hunting her now, she would panic.
"Come in," he said softly.
She walked in, wrapping her arms around herself. "Is everything okay? You've been in here for hours."
"Just handling some business," he replied, standing up and walking around the mahogany desk. He looked at her, truly looking at the woman who had unknowingly lived in the shadow of his enemy for years.
Arthur Cole had taken everything from this woman. He had left her a struggling single mother. He had forced her to scrub floors to survive. And now, Cole wanted to destroy her completely.
A dark, violent protectiveness surged inside Alessandro, stronger than anything he had ever felt.
"Clara," he said, stopping right in front of her. "I need you to promise me something."
She looked up at him, her large, expressive eyes searching his face. "What is it?"
"Promise me you will never leave my side until this is over," he commanded, his voice thick with an emotion he refused to name. "Promise me you will trust me."
Clara hesitated, feeling the sudden, overwhelming gravity in the room. Then, she gave a slow nod. "I trust you, Alessandro."

It was the first time she had used his first name.
Hearing it on her lips was the final push he needed. Alessandro Moretti didn't just want to protect his empire anymore. He wanted to burn Arthur Cole's entire world to the ground.
