Chapter 12: The Masterstroke

11:45 AM, Wall Street
Arthur Cole sat in his penthouse office overlooking the financial district, pouring himself a glass of fifty-year-old scotch. The tabloid hit-piece had worked perfectly. Moretti Enterprises’ stock was fluctuating, and his own investors were calling to offer their sympathies.
He raised his glass to the Manhattan skyline.
Then, his office doors burst open.
His Chief Financial Officer practically fell into the room, his face the color of wet ash. "Arthur... turn on the news. Right now."
Arthur frowned, grabbing the remote and flicking on the massive flat-screen TV mounted on the wall.
It wasn't a tabloid show. It was the premier financial news network. And Alessandro Moretti was standing at a podium outside the federal courthouse, flanked by a small army of lawyers.
"Mr. Moretti," a reporter shouted over the chaos. "Can you confirm the rumors regarding the hostile takeover?"
Alessandro adjusted the microphone. His face was entirely devoid of mercy.
"It isn't a rumor," Alessandro's voice boomed through the television speakers. "As of ten minutes ago, Moretti Enterprises has acquired seventy-one percent of the active debt belonging to Cole Holdings. Furthermore, I have submitted undeniable proof to the SEC that Arthur Cole has been utilizing offshore shell companies to artificially inflate his stock prices and bribe union officials."
Arthur dropped his glass. The crystal shattered, fifty-year-old scotch pooling on the carpet.
"Due to the immediate freezing of Cole Enterprises' assets by federal regulators," Alessandro continued smoothly, "they are in default on the loans I now own. I am foreclosing on every commercial property, subsidiary, and holding company in the Cole portfolio."
Arthur stumbled backward, clutching his chest. He was ruined. Not just financially damaged—obliterated. Decades of generational wealth, wiped out in a single morning.
On the screen, a reporter yelled one final question. "Mr. Moretti! Does this have anything to do with your former fiancée's allegations against your new partner?"

Alessandro looked directly into the camera.
"Vanessa Cole is a footnote," he said coldly. "Clara Evans is the future. And let this serve as a warning to anyone in this city: You do not touch my family."
