Chapter 15: Blood on the Docks

The cold wind whipped across Pier 42, biting through my coat.
The docks were completely abandoned, illuminated only by the flickering amber glow of the streetlights. The two men dragged me toward the edge of the pier, where the black, freezing water of the Hudson River churned violently below.
This was exactly where Daniel had died.
"Arthur is losing everything today," the man with the gun said, shoving me toward the edge. "He figures if he's going down, he's taking Moretti's new queen with him. Tragic suicide. The grief of the scandal was just too much for the poor maid."
"Alessandro will kill you," I gasped, digging my heels into the wet concrete, fighting with everything I had.
"Moretti is in Manhattan," the second thug laughed. "He won't even know you're gone until you wash up in Staten Island."
The man with the gun raised his weapon, aiming directly at my chest.
I closed my eyes, silently praying that Emma would forgive me.
THWACK.
The sound of a suppressed sniper round echoed in the empty night.
The man aiming the gun at me abruptly dropped his weapon, a neat hole appearing in his shoulder before he collapsed to the concrete, screaming in agony.
The second thug froze, completely bewildered.
Out of the shadows of the shipping containers, a convoy of matte black SUVs roared onto the pier, their high beams blindingly bright. They didn't brake until they were ten feet away.
The doors flew open. Marcus and a dozen heavily armed tactical operators flooded the pier, weapons raised.
But it wasn't Marcus who reached me first.
Alessandro stepped out of the lead vehicle. He looked like the devil himself. He wasn't wearing a suit; he was wearing a tactical vest over a black sweater, a Sig Sauer pistol gripped loosely in his right hand.
The remaining uninjured thug dropped to his knees, throwing his hands in the air. "Don't shoot! We surrender!"
Alessandro didn't even look at the man. He walked straight past him, holstered his weapon, and pulled me into an embrace so fierce it knocked the breath out of my lungs.
"You promised me," Alessandro roared, his voice shaking with a terrifying mix of absolute fury and profound relief. "You promised you wouldn't leave my side!"
"I saw the file," I sobbed into his chest, clutching his sweater. "I saw what they did to Daniel. I had to get a confession."
Alessandro cupped my face, forcing me to look into his dark, manic eyes.
"I already have his confession," Alessandro gritted out. "I had Mickey Ross picked up by my men ten minutes after you left the house. I was building the criminal case to hand to the FBI so you wouldn't have to get your hands dirty, Clara!"
He pressed his forehead against mine, his breathing ragged.
"Do you have any idea what it did to me?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "Finding your wing empty? Knowing Cole's men were out here? I would have burned this entire city to ash if they had taken you from me."

"I'm sorry," I cried, realizing the sheer stupidity of my grief-fueled run. "I'm so sorry."
Alessandro didn't answer with words. He crashed his lips onto mine, kissing me with a desperate, savage hunger right there on the bloodstained docks.
