Chapter 18: Rebuilding

The scandal of the decade took exactly two weeks to settle.
When the FBI released the details of Arthur Cole’s crimes—including the attempted hit on me at the docks—public opinion violently shifted. Vanessa became a social pariah, her name synonymous with fraud and cruelty.
But something miraculous happened to me.
New York didn't reject the maid. They embraced her. The tabloids rebranded me. I went from the "Homewrecker Maid" to the "Lioness of Wall Street." The story of a widowed mother exposing a corrupt billionaire to protect an empire captured the heart of the city.
But stepping into Alessandro’s world was a steep learning curve.
We were sitting in the grand dining room of the estate one evening. It was no longer just me eating in the staff kitchen. I was sitting at the head of the mahogany table across from Alessandro, wearing a stunning emerald dress, while staff members—my former colleagues—served us dinner.
I felt a sudden, sharp wave of imposter syndrome.
I looked down at the array of silver forks, my appetite suddenly vanishing.
Alessandro noticed immediately. He set his wine glass down. "What’s wrong?"
"I don't know what I'm doing," I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper. "Three weeks ago, I was dusting that chandelier. Now, I'm sitting under it. The staff looks at me differently. Society expects me to be this flawless partner to you, and I... I don't know which fork to use, Alessandro."
Alessandro stared at me for a long moment. Then, he stood up.
He didn't just walk over to me. He walked to the center of the table, grabbed the edge of the exquisite silk tablecloth, and pulled.
Crystal glasses shattered. Silver platters crashed to the hardwood floor. The roast duck and expensive wine spilled everywhere.
I jumped out of my chair with a gasp. "Alessandro! What are you doing?"
He stepped through the debris, entirely unbothered, and took my face in his hands.
"Fuck the forks, Clara," he said, his voice fierce and unyielding. "Fuck the chandeliers. Fuck high society and their expectations. I didn't fall in love with a socialite. I fell in love with a woman who had the courage to bring down my enemies with nothing but her voice. You don't have to learn how to fit into my world."

He kissed me hard, silencing all my doubts.
"This is your world now," he promised against my lips. "And they will adapt to you."
