Chapter 5 - The Final Curtain

The screen illuminated the dark room.
It wasn't just audio.
It was crisp, high-definition security footage from my foyer, captured just three days ago.
There was no sound at first, but the picture painted a thousand words.
The entire ballroom watched in stunned silence as the video showed the "housekeeper" struggling to carry heavy boxes.

They saw Vanessa sitting on a velvet chair, filing her nails, deliberately kicking her muddy shoe against the clean marble.
"Turn that off!" Vanessa shrieked, lunging toward the stage.
Security guards stepped smoothly in front of her, blocking her path.
The audio suddenly clicked on, echoing loudly through the ballroom speakers.
“Scrub it.” Vanessa’s harsh, recorded voice filled the room.
“You missed a spot, you blind old bat.”
The wealthy guests began to murmur, casting disgusted looks at the woman in the white dress.
Then came the climax of the video.
The camera clearly captured me refusing to scrub the floor.
It captured Vanessa marching into the utility room.
And then, it showed her walking back out with a heavy bucket of dirty gray mop water.
With a vicious sneer, she hurled the entire bucket directly at my head.
The collective gasp from the ballroom was deafening.
The footage showed Daniel walking in right as the water hit me.
The reporters who had walked in with Vanessa were now furiously snapping photos of her panicked, sweating face.
She was trapped.
The proof was undeniable, raw, and unedited.
"This... this is fake!" Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking violently.
"It's deepfake technology!"
"She hired professionals to make this!"
"Is that so?" I asked, signaling the technician again.
The screen shifted.
It wasn't footage from my house anymore.
It was a montage of documents, police reports, and court records.
"You see, after you threatened to ruin my family, I did a little background check," I announced.
"And I found out that Daniel wasn't your first target."
The screen displayed an old news clipping.
"Four years ago in Chicago, you were engaged to a man named Thomas Sterling," I read aloud.
"You accused his mother of similar abuse."
"You extracted a two-hundred-thousand-dollar settlement to sign an NDA and walk away."
Vanessa's face drained of all blood.
She looked like she was about to faint.
"Two years ago in Miami," I continued mercilessly.
"You pulled the exact same stunt with a retired surgeon."
"Only he didn't pay."
"He sued you for defamation, and you fled the state."
I walked closer to her, lowering my voice so only she and the front row could hear.
"You are not a victim, Vanessa," I stated coldly.
"You are a professional predator."
"And you made a fatal mistake thinking my family would be your next paycheck."
Flashbulbs exploded rapidly.
The reporters were now shouting questions at Vanessa, demanding answers about the extortion claims.
She covered her face with her hands, letting out a frustrated scream.
Without another word, she turned and pushed her way frantically through the crowd.
She ran out the mahogany doors, leaving her dignity and her meticulously crafted lies shattered on the ballroom floor.
The heavy doors closed behind her.
The ballroom remained perfectly silent for five seconds.
Then, slowly, someone in the back began to clap.
Soon, the entire room was filled with thunderous applause.
Daniel stepped up beside me, wrapping his arm around my shoulder.
"Remind me never to make you angry, Mom," he whispered, a genuine smile finally breaking through his sorrow.
I patted his hand, signaling the technician to bring the house lights back up.

"I'm a mother, Daniel," I replied softly.
"There isn't a force on this earth I wouldn't fight to protect my son."
